This gorgeous chess board has beautiful walnut and burl wood squares, giving it a clean, elegant appearance with a lovely matte finish. The turned wood playing pieces have a simple, classic design with a nice finish. The pieces are light, however the magnets give them a really nice weight at their base. The magnets give each piece a light magnetic adherence to the game board. I personally think the magnets are "just right" — allowing for smooth gameplay with a little extra stability should the board get bumped or moved. (Just don't expect to play a game of vertical wall-chess — if that's a thing. LOL) It's worth noting that there are some slight variations in the stain, particularly with the dark playing pieces, which occurs naturally with stained wood. Also, the wood edge of the board/casing is noticeably different from the wood veneer playing surface. This would bother me in an expensive high-end display board, however the rest of this board is so very nice, it's easy to forget that it's a budget-friendly folding travel board. The case nicely stores all 34 pieces for a snug fit into the cut foam. The pieces aren't likely to fall out accidentally. For added peace of mind, two antiqued brass clasps hold the case securely closed. This is definitely the most elegant travel chess board I've seen. While I love that I can easily store it away in the cabinet, the board is nice enough to leave out and ready for the next match. Check- it out for yourself -mate.

The walnut and burl squares on this board are a lot nicer than I was expecting. The lighter color wood has the prettiest patterns! There is no mistaking this for laminate, that's for sure. The board itself has a good weight to it. It's very sturdy and won't shift around during play if the table is bumped. Adding to this, the pieces are magnetic as is the board, so they have additional security. My son is learning how to play chess, and he loves this board. He likes how fancy it looks, and how the pieces feel in his hands. A child or adult can use it. It packs up easy for travel and the pieces are secured in sponge holders, but it does look nice enough to leave out as well. As for the pieces, it has an extra queen in case you promote a pawn, which usually isn't included. The pieces themselves are simply carved, nothing ornate, but it's fine.

The media could not be loaded. I do like this chessboard setup, the wood grain is beautiful on the board, the individual squares and on the pieces themselves. Everything feels sturdy and quality, however after having the board out for only one day, one of the latches came off the board. They are screwed on with incredibly tiny screws and when the latch came off the screw went flying across the floor and we couldn't find it. Putting this issue to the side, I enjoyed the rest of the board quite a bit. The board is 15 inches, magnetized and folds in half for storage. At the time of the review this set was $36.99 and I can't really say if it's really worth that price. The magnetization is not super strong, but it is strong enough to keep the pieces from flying off the board if it's bumped or banged into. I set the board up and then held it sideways to see how many pieces might move or slide, which a few of them did, but it wasn't like the whole board was a mess or anything. I am impressed with the way everything fits snug and secure under the board (the pieces are held in place with a soft foam, custom cut for each piece) as well as the additional queens for each side. I have to say usually we loose pawns before anything but I can see why extra queens are important. Before the latch broke I'd have happily given this five stars, but considering we couldn't even fix it because of how tiny the screws were this really dropped it for me. I also don't think I could recommend this as gift-able again because of the latch breaking, this to me says bad craftsmanship and takes it off of my gifting list. I like that this is easy to carry and move from place to place, whether mid game or for travel. The biggest win for me is being able to play this board on a couch or a bed while not having to worry about a random child catapulting themselves into our game (the catapulting will likely still happen but at least we will know our pieces will stay put :D). I'm giving this a four star rating overall, I'm happy with so much about this set with my only issue as stated above, I won't go so far as to say I wouldn't buy this or I don't recommend it, but I would say purchase with caution, and I wouldn't purchase this one as a gift. This was a great upgrade to my magnetic chess set that I've had since 2010. This holds the pieces so perfectly inside making for a neat pick up. They didn't hold into the places so well when arriving but that might have been from the travel to me. So glad I got this item, highly suggest if your looking for a magnetic chess set.

This is a very nice chessboard. The magnetic plane surface works out great for when my older sons need to flee the toddler trying to mess up their game only problem one of the clasps broke the second time we used it. I was able to put it back in, but hopefully the pin doesn’t fall out again. Something to consider is with the chess pieces each having their own space it takes longer for setting up and putting away this game. It is definitely nice enough to give us a gift.
