  • Ah, the Good Ole Days!
Size: One Size
I love this butter maker, for many reasons, so much so that I bought another one to gift to my friend. When you enjoy something enough to share it, that says a lot! Why do I love this humble, butter making contraption? It’s simple. It doesn’t need electricity, doesn’t need to plug into something to recharge, there’s no batteries, because it’s hand powered. I miss the good old days of using your own muscles to get things done. Ah, the good ole days. Just unscrew the lid, add milk, rescrew the top and then repeatedly shake the jar. The jar is a lightweight plastic, it’s not heavy at all, but it does take some time and patience. ‘All good things take time’ yes? After shaking the butter maker in a back and forth motion, (upside down to rightside up position), the milk starts to slowly thicken. It’s not overly exhausting, but it does take time for the milk to thicken into butter. Hand exercise bonus! Remember the hilarious shaking exercise gadget from the eighties? Hilarious! Thankfully, this butter maker, is not that! This butter maker is potentially a fun way to show kids how butter is made; they would probably think it’s a kind of alchemical magic! It truly is amazing: how a liquid becomes a solid, just through the process of shaking. In an era of immediate gratification and rampant attention-deficit; I think children need more tactile learning experiences. Cleverly distract them away from the endless electronic gadgets and screens; let them learn organically, by physically maneuvering things. I think cooking is a beautiful and creative form of art therapy. I especially appreciate the natural quality of the finished product. The choice is left to you to pick the type of milk: organic, whole, grassfed etc. You can keep it simple or make it gourmet with additional ingredients. Add extra flavor with garlic or herbs; it’s entirely up to you to handcraft your freshly-made, artisanal butter. I’ve often bought ultra-expensive, handmade Truffle Butter at my supermarket, (because it has healthy ingredients and is addictively delicious); but now I can make it myself. Did I mention that the butter I made lasted an amazingly long time? After I made it, I stored it in the refrigerator for who knows how long, and it remained fresh and tasty; without turning a different color or losing it’s texture. The butter maker comes with it’s own built-in storage and is easy to clean. I didn’t put it in the dishwasher, I hand washed it with a sponge. Buy this unassuming buttermaker and wind back time. I highly recommend it. ... show more

  • A Simple and Perfect Tool
Size: One Size
I've been making butter in my Cuisinart for years and I wish I had known about this before. It's simple, it's effective, it's easy to clean, and it makes a perfect amount. It's near perfect as a tool and I highly recommend.

  • Fun and easy to use. Great kitchen staple!
Size: One Size
Clever design. Something a kid can easily use to help in the kitchen. Measurements marked on the shaker make this fool proof. The shaker works pretty well but the butter tends to get stuck in the container when you unscrew the serving bowl from the bottom, particularly after refrigeration. Everything else works wonderfully. You'll know when the butter is done because you can hear the liquid literally separate from the butter. The shaking goes from a thick batter type feel to a light swishey/liquid feel. All parts are easy to separate and remove. It cleans up easily in the dishwasher on the top rack. Just remember to take the rubber diaphragm out of the top lid and wash it separately. My only suggestion to the company is to make a jar twice this size so that more butter can be made at one time. If there were half stars I'd give this a 4.5. ... show more

  • I Love Cooking With Fresh-Made Butter!
Size: One Size
When I was small, my mother had a similar hand-shaken butter churn that she used to make soft, spreadable butter for multiple purposes. It was from a different manufacturer, but worked essentially the same way: you put heavy cream in the reservoir, let it warm to approximately room temperature, and then shake it until he fatty solids separate and form a mass. That mass is the butter, which, when fresh from the shaker, is soft, easy to work with, and has a pleasing fluffy texture. Mom’s old butter churn got damaged and discarded somewhere along the way, but I never forgot the taste and texture of fresh-made butter. When I saw this butter maker was available at such a reasonable price, I knew I had to have it. The butter I makes lives up to the memories I have from my childhood. Fresh-made butter spreads more evenly on breads and other surfaces, without tearing the bread, and disappears quickly into whatever you’re spreading it on, leaving behind nothing but the taste. Also, fresh-made butter is airier and more malleable than store-bought butter. This makes it preferable for baking and other cooking that involves mixing. When the butter is fresh from the shaker, it’s solid enough to stand up on its own, but also blends easily. Unlike refrigerated butter, which is rock-hard, or melted butter, which is pure liquid, fresh-made butter has a light, fluffy texture, which it conveys directly into the baked goods, which emerge with a much airier texture than you’re maybe accustomed to. Fresh-made butter does have its limits. It doesn’t keep as long as store-bought butter, for instance; the store-bought stuff can remain fresh for a remarkably long time, because it’s been so thoroughly processed that it has no impurities. Fresh-made butter, even if it’s rinsed and stored well, has a life expectancy of about a week, tops, so be prepared to use it quickly. Also, if you refrigerate it, fresh-made butter will remain airy, but it will turn shockingly hard and difficult to spread. This butter maker comes with clear, easy-to-follow instructions. It may take a few tries to get it right. They also don’t warn you that your cream will turn into whipped cream before it turns into butter; this doesn’t mean you’ve done something wrong, just that you must keep shaking. I threw out a lot of perfectly good cream before I realized this. The butter maker itself is simple, has no moving parts, and is easy to clean. Make sure you clean up under the silicone seal, which can trap food particles. Probably not everyone really wants fresh-made butter or can use it. But for ambitious home cooks, this is a slick addition to your kitchen arsenal, and you can tell the difference between fresh-made and store-bought butter when you use it. Your food, especially baked goods, will have a finer texture and a richer, earthier flavor. I look forward to trying fresh butter in more recipes in the future, as everything I’ve tried it so far has been improved by its taste and texture. ... show more
