Description

First released on by James Iha and D'arcy Wretsky's Smashing Pumpkins offshoot label Scratchie Records in 1996, the Chainsaw Kittens' self-titled album was never officially released on vinyl. For the album, the Oklahoma four-piece enlisted the help of The Flaming Lips' Steven Drozd along with the help of a number of violinists and orchestra members, successfully making the album their most commercially successful. The Chainsaw Kittens toured with the album for over three years, selling out stadiums and theaters with bands like the Smashing Pumpkins, who often cite the Kittens as an early influence, along with Kurt Cobain of Nirvana. Of the album, AllMusic says 'the overall feeling of the album is more melancholy and thoughtful than any previous one, capturing the sense of sadness and desperation...'. For this first ever official release of the album on vinyl, a wealth of archival material has been drudged up, including never before seen live photos and art which will be included in an inner booklet. The album cover will be a full-color gatefold with newly created artwork by award winning Flaming Lips designer George Salisbury. Vinyl will be pressed at Archer Record Pressing in Detroit, MI with 1000 LPs pressed on red vinyl and 1000 LPs pressed on black vinyl. 100 randomly inserted copies will contain an original press photo, newly autographed by the band. LP - 1000 on Black 180g Vinyl/1000 on Blue 180g Vinyl (randomly inserted), download code, gatefold w/ previously unreleased photos, 100 randomly inserted copies will contain an original press photo, newly autographed by the band.

  • The bestestest Chainsaw Kittens album
I first heard of Chainsaw Kittens back in the 90s via Scratchie Records (the record company founded by Smashing Pumpkins members James Iha and D'Arcy Wretzky). Over the years I had owned all their albums at one time or another. While they collected dust in my closet for a few years, I recently decided to give them another listen. I must say that their self-titled album is their best one by far. It has a sound to it that makes the band stand out much more than their other releases. This album is so chock full of quirky-yet-catchy, indie 90s sound that it gushes over the rim and spills onto the floor at your feet. Their guitars and melodies are addictive, and the energy coming from this album is barely restrained, boisterous, frustrated, explosive, dizzying, and fully satisfying. All in all it is a great indie alternative album from the 90s, and the best offering from the Chainsaw Kittens. Pick this album up, and pay especially close attention to the songs Heart Catch Thump, Monkey Smoke, and Bones in my Teeth. These songs stand out above and beyond even the album itself. ... show more

  • Great great fun
Every Kittens album has something going for it, and this is no excpetion. They move away from the bombast Smashing Pumpkins-like attack on their first few albums (which were, in chronological order, VIOLENT RELIGION, FLIPPED OUT IN SINGAPORE, and POP HEIRESS) to a more light-hearted pop sound but despite the light it still kinda rocks. There are a few mediocre tracks to be sure, but for the most part you won't be wasting your money. Highlights include: -Dorothy's Last FLing: they are as good as opening albums as they are at closing them -Tongue Trick -Bones in My Teeth: Every time I hear this I think of "wig in a box" from the movie HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, listen and see if you agree -No Surprise -Speedway Oklahoma ... show more

  • This band deserves more attention
This album is so fantastic.. Tyson Meade has one of the best voices in music today.. This album is different from the other ones before.. The song "Heartcatchthump" will get stuck in your head so fast.. "Speedway Oklahoma" is another great song.. The violin and the piano on it is amazing..

  • Bod op um-BOP
First off, the song "Heartcatchthump" is one darn catchy pop tune, if there ever was one. Aside from that gem, this is a great cd with plenty of killer guitar riffs, off-beat lyrics, soaring melodies and vocals by Tyson Meade- as only he can deliver. Lots of bizarre, yet rockin'(loud guitars) tracks here- especially "Tongue Trick", "Ballad Of Newsman", and "Bones In My Teeth"...this is easily their best album . There's also enough piano, violin, cello and moog-synth to satisfy anyone. Chainsaw Kittens were a fantastic, weird little band. Fans and "music geeks" of Sparks, Cheap Trick, The Cars, Alice Cooper, David Bowie, Smashing Pumpkins, Iggy & The Stooges, Sex Pistols, and The Smiths, should check them out. Highly recommended. ... show more
