  • Ideal for a homemade forge
The media could not be loaded. I was planning a forge build using an old wood stove and the available smaller quantities of Kaowool were inadequate to complete the project. I also figured that if this experiment didn't quite work out, I'd have more than enough left over for a second forge build using a different method. Much more cost effective buying in this quantity and more flexibility in sizing the pieces as needed. Cuts easily and square with just a box knife. I opened up the cuts for a second and third pass to get through the full 2" thickness. Does a great job insulating the forge and after an hour of running I could still touch the side of the stove with a bare hand. I also used rigidizer to ensure the blanket stays in one piece an that seems to be doing the trick. See video for this item in action. ... show more

  • Lightweight and extremely efficient refractory
I'm currently using this as the lining of foundry furnace, within a steel shell. I used a 2" outer layer at full thickness and, by slicing it into 1" swaths (not necessarily recommended), a 1" inner layer which could be easily replaced if damaged. I sealed exposed surfaces and the abutting surfaces between the three tiers of my furnace (specific to my design, ymmv) with sodium silicate to keep it from shedding, but have chosen not to bother sealing the inner faces until and if it becomes necessary. A utility knife cuts fiber blanket fairly well, but blades dull quickly. Use a well-fitting face mask when working with this material as its microscopic airborne fibers can cause lung damage. Mine is a 3M full face mask, but that might be overkill. I also wore coveralls which I washed after each session, and kept hazardous material outdoors as much as possible. I recommend using pre-made 1" blanket if you need this thickness. Slicing it the long way produced way more airborne fiber than I would've liked, and I wasn't able to get truly clean cuts (lots of pretty thick, flappy pieces left hanging on the sides, leaving me to wonder whether I should peel them off or leave them attached. In my limited testing so far, my furnace appears to be extremely efficient at melting aluminum in a steel crucible with my 3/4" propane burner. I may use my remaining fiber blanket to replace the solid refractory in my forge next spring. The box shipped reasonably quickly, and weighs around 33 pounds. I saw some cheaper versions out there, but I was more comfortable with this product and seller after considerable research. ... show more

  • Quality performance
We picked up a very nice stainless steel stove/oven locally for dirt cheap. The sellers were acquaintences who were getting a new kitchen and just wanted it gone. Well, while they had it in storage for 5 months a mouse decided to take up residence in the insulation. Found out while warming oven for baking a cake. Replaced the insulation with this. Overkill, I know! But worked like a charm, very easy to work with and the oven is the most efficient we've owned! ... show more

  • Great product Amazing price
Bought to line my forge. After a lot of searching trying to find a good deal with the amount I needed I found this. Amazing price fast shipping plenty left over for relining the large 3 burner forge I built. Combined with some kaowool ridgidizer, and a good refractory, which is 100% essential, I would definitely buy again. ... show more

  • Could have been sealed for customer safety.
I'm sure it's going to work well but you would think that for a product which is a known carcinogent that it would be wrapped in plastic. Instead it was just rolled and put in a cardboard box. Quite alarming.

  • Great for a Raku kiln.
This is perfect for a lightweight Raku kiln. The order arrived even sooner than promised, was well packaged, and the quality of the insulation itself is great. It appears to be very uniform in density. Can’t wait to use it!!!!
