  • Initial impressions
Let me start off this review by saying that I have a little more than 12 years experience playing the violin. Every other review on here that I've read seem to have been written by people with no experience with the violin or students just starting. I will put a disclaimer on this review in that I have never owned a good violin before, they have all been beginner violins or shoddy second hand violins (though I have experience with high quality violins), so, it is quite possible my perception of this violin is biased. My main concerns with this violin when purchasing it were the pegs, the tailpiece, the varnish, how it plays in third position, the bridge, and overall quality of workmanship in the violin itself. The pegs pictured seemed to be of very poor quality and almost worthless, I can say that my initial impression from the picture was quite wrong but I don't think it would be out of the question to upgrade them later on. They are not the best pegs I have ever seen or used but they are certainly passable. The tailpiece I would say more or less met my expectations (in that it is not the greatest but it does not seem to be an issue at all with the instrument). I intend on upgrading the tail piece soon but it is not dire. The varnish on the violin is pretty good, it exceeded my hopes for this instrument, but again, it is not quite to the level of other violins I have played on (but these were violins that cost thousands of dollars). The higher tones and third position play wonderfully on this violin and far far exceeded my expectations. The tone on the violin all around is wonderful. The bridge is not a problem in the least and the workmanship on it is well above standard for the price you'll pay. I was not too concerned about the bows because I had ordered a new one for it anyways but I have to say that the bows that came with it were much better than I had expected. Overall I would say that this violin could easily match the quality of the other violins in the suggested price (which I believe was about $1,200) and it is wonderful that it only costs $500. The unnecessary adjustments for the tailpiece and the pegs will still leave you with a fantastic violin that's worth much more than you'll pay for it. On a final note, I would like to say that I've only had this instrument for a day and if my opinion of it changes anytime soon I will update but at the moment I am very very happy with it. ... show more

  • Great Starter Violin; Doesn't Take Much to Make Playable
Size: full-size Color: Satin Antique
I absolutely love this violin. This is my 3rd attempt at finding the right beginner violin. The moment I opened the case, I knew that it was going to be the one. It comes with the bridge already in place and the strings were pretty close to being in tune (and they were ACTUALLY tuneable). I had a big problem with other violin's tuning pegs not being usable. The case is amazing, the bow is actually good quality, and the violin itself is absolutely gorgeous. I have always like the darker tones. The only thing that I am not a huge fan of is the shoulder rest that came with it, but I already had another one, so it was no big deal. I would definitely recommend this violin for those that want an inexpensive beginner violin. ... show more

  • Great Product

Great product but the Case lock broke already, haven't been able to get in contact with someone to get a replacement. Other than that, my daughter loves it, just want the case to be replaced.

  • OK But Cheaply Made
I have been a pianist for many years and I always wanted to play the violin. I wanted something to start out with that wasn't to expensive but still good in quality. I came across this one and I decided to take a chance on it and I was a little bit disappointed to say the least. I received the violin and the color is actually a little bit lighter in person which I don't mind but still it's not the color in the advertised photo. The strings are what caught my eye the most as they are very low grade quality. I went to tune the strings and SNAP one broke, I barely touched the tuning knob and a string just snapped. I took the violin to my local music shop and he told me this violin is very cheaply made but said what he could do is put some high quality strings on the violin and it will sound as good as a high quality violin. The strings weren't cheap but I agreed to do so and I'm glad I did because the violin has a nice rich sound to it now. I'm going to get a new bow next because that is also of low grade quality. All in all this product is for beginners and you defiantly get what you pay for. ... show more

  • You dont even get what you pay for-no ebony, poor attention to detail
I cant begin to describe how disappointing this product is. At the price and with the description of "professional level violin," you would expect significantly better workmanship. I bought this so I could have my own violin to learn on and wanted a nice one I would treasure for years. This violin actually has worse workmanship than my wife's student level Lisle model 106 despite being marketed as a 'professional' violin. The only thing this violin has going for it is the nice dark finish that looks very beautiful on the flame maple back. Unfortunately, beyond that one feature, the violin is very poorly made. You can see in the pictures how there appears to be overspray or bleeding paint from the fingerboard which has a very rough seam with the neck near the body and at the nut. This is odd because the fingerboard, which should just be ebony AS DESCRIBED, should not need to be painted. The reason- the fingerboard is just a cheap wood painted black. This is dishonest and misleading since, when I read "ebony," I assume (along with most experienced musicians) they are talking about the hard wood, not the color. Additionally, after 20 minutes of play, there appear to be scuff marks on the finger board. Once again, this is probably due to the soft painted finish on soft wood which feels a little tacky when scratched with a finger nail. The "fancy" tuning pegs (that are plastic, not ebony) are probably just used to distract from the poorly finished headbox. Inside, you can see very rough wood that was never even rough sanded. The back of the neck appears to have chip that was partially filled in with lacquer, the fine tuners come out way too far (yes, I'm sure a pro would get rid of them, but they look uglier than most I've seen). Lastly, the case received was not the one pictured and appears to be a cheaper type, lined in white. I'm asking for a refund and looking elsewhere for a violin. ... show more
