  • It was worth the money when purchased
Size: 4/4 Style: CVN-600
I ordered this over two years ago as an adult beginner. It was priced higher than the current offering and, according to reviews in other places, was the only Cecillo offering at the time that was not a violin shaped object. I had to setup the bridge when it arrived and I found lots of videos that got me up and running. It sounded okay but not great for a beginner. More of that was my ability than the instrument. I learned to play a few songs and never appreciated the sound under my ear especially on the G string. Removing the fine tuners on all but the E string improved the sound greatly. I did snap the D string while tuning immediately after removing the tuners and bought a replacement locally with the same strings. At the shop I was told they thought the sound post was misplaced but I would need to leave it and come back later to retrieve the instrument. I opted not to do this and I haven’t felt the need to get this checked further. The bows are not great but they work as they should for a student. After extensive use one of the bows started to break a lot of hair. I switched to the second bow and ordered a carbon fiber from Fiddlerman. Once that bow arrived I have not used the second bow that came with the violin. The instrument looks great and feels great in the hands. Where the shoulder rest attaches has removed some of the varnish on one side. Probably my fault as I was initially moving it around a lot until I found the most comfortable spot. The included shoulder rest sucks and I replaced it with a Kun. Some people complain about the rosin but I haven’t had any issues. People that recommended this violin in 2018-2020 no longer recommend it because it seems the quality has gone down. The current price is almost half what it cost two years ago. Considering real inflation and the current price of $200, this is almost 75% less money than two years ago. I have not touched any of their current offerings to be able to make a comparison but I would not buy it knowing the price has gone down so much. I would be afraid that quality matches the reduced price. I cannot say that has happened. I do not regret this purchase but, if I had to do it over again, I would spend about $500 on a Fiddlerman Concert deluxe rather than this. I do enjoy it and continue to play it every day. I do not plan to replace it for quite awhile. ... show more

  • Great budget option for student if you add better strings and bow
Size: 3/4 Style: CVN-200
CVN-200 can produce decent tone with upgraded strings, a better bow, and decent rosin. Other reviewers have stated this is not your kid's orchestra instrument, but both the private lesson teacher and school orchestra teacher said the instrument was not holding our kid back when I asked if we should get a better instrument. My daughter actually made it into a selective regional middle school orchestra with this instrument (fresh helicore strings and using a Fiddlerman carbon fiber bow). So for budding musician on a budget this can be a solid option, though for full size if you can afford it you might want to consider a nicer instrument. Our instrument came with two warped bows, it would have been nicer to include one better bow with the outfit instead of the two terrible bows. You will also want to upgrade the rosin, d'addario dark rosin is what we used. This instrument has a thick lacquer and will not project as much as a more expensive instrument with a hand rubbed varnish. We originally got the CVN-200 1/2 size as emergency replacement of her original instrument following a disastrous break in elementary school strings class, the repair would have taken 3 weeks and cost twice as much as this instrument which was delivered with Amazon prime in short order. My daughter liked the look of wood tone tailpiece and chinrest which was like her prior instrument. I would have wanted to get her a slightly nicer step up. Bought the 3/4 Cecilio CVN-200 when my daughter needed to upsize from the 1/2 CVN-200, and she was adamant she only wanted the same exact model. Even with upgrading to helicore strings (easier on the fingers and warmer tone vs. the Preludes) and a fiddlerman carbon fiber bow, this outfit is all in way cheaper than renting for one year in our area and each size lasted us 2 years. Win-win. ... show more
