  • Fake violin
Size: 4/4-size
I gave one star for violin case. Not for the instrument. This violin is terrible. The bow doesn’t make sound. It doesn’t work at all!! I returned it right away.

  • Mediocre and definitely for a beginner
Size: 4/4-size
This Apollo branded violin is most definitely for a beginner learning how to play violin. If you’re thinking about learning to play but don’t know how serious you will get - this will probably be perfect. If you’re wanting to take learning the violin seriously - I would not recommend this and you’re better off spending a little extra money to get a quality piece. The violin comes with the bow, a case, rosin, and a tuner. The case is probably the nicest part of the kit and is really sturdy with pockets. This kit comes with no instructions which is absurd since it’s for a beginner. I guess I will mostly be relying on online articles and YouTube videos but still strange. The violin I got is a 4 4/4 size which after some research is best for a young adult or adult when looking at size ratios. You can tell the quality of the violin is best for a beginner player as it just doesn’t have as much weight as I would expect to it. It’s hard to get it tuned right the first time even with the tuner - I watched probably 5 YouTube videos to make sure I was getting it right and then had a friend with more musical knowledge than me look it over. They also helped me with the rosin application. So far I’ve learned to play a few basic songs that sound good to my ear - I think if I decide to get more serious about learning I will upgrade and use this as a violin I can travel with and won’t worry about it possibly getting beat up along the way. For the price of $127 currently as of 5/25 I think it’s a good violin for a beginner to buy while deciding if it’s something they like. ... show more

  • For beginners- teens and up
Size: 4/4-size
This needed some significant adjustments I had to pay to have done at a local shop because the strings were not installed correctly. I ended up purchasing a different bow for it because the bow was coming apart and a real problem. For a beginner, or somebody wanting to try their hand at a string instrument before springing for something nice- probably not a bad piece, but it's not a good investment if you plan to get serious about it. ... show more

  • Alright for absolute beginners, decent for the price
Size: 4/4-size
I got this violin for my brother, who is an aspiring music teacher and needs instruments for his personal collection. His evaluation of this violin is that it is a decent deal for the price, but only ideal for a very early beginner who does not need a high quality instrument. This would be suitable for an elementary or middle school age child who is interested in trying out a new instrument without investing a lot of money. As such, here are the prows and cons of this particular violin: Pros: The fine tuners work, the pegs hold pitch, and the chin rest is secure on the instrument. Cons: The bridge is too high so the strings are a little too high off the fingerboard, there are no notches/grooves on the nut, and the bridge didn't come on the instrument - I had to assemble it myself. The big issue is the quality of the bow. The bow looks like it's tightened, but the hair is totally slack, so you have to tighten the bow way too much to get an adequate amount of tension. Also, the stick is starting to detach from the frog. It should be flush. ... show more

  • Adequate for beginners or practice
Size: 4/4-size
I got the 4/4 (full size), which is for a larger child or adult. Overall I'm pretty impressed with the Apollo brand. I've tested several of their instruments so far, and they're able to make fairly decent beginners instruments at quite amazing prices. In some cases, like their tuba and trumpet, the quality is better than adequate. But these low end instruments are for: Beginners (if they decide they don't like it, it's not a lot of money invested), for practice (doesn't matter if they get scratched up), to be left at the school locker (if they get stolen it's not that big of a deal), etc. Don't expect a lot. String instruments are a bit more complicated, and you can clearly see where they cut some corners on this. That's not an insult - if you don't want cut corners, you should spend $500 on a beginner's Yamaha. The question is whether you can live with the cut corners, and for most beginners I would say yes, this is adequate. This has a cheap bow (loose hairs right off the bat), the resin is cheap, the finish isn't even, the tailpiece is cheaply made, the fine tuners are difficult to turn, and a few other issues. All of these are fairly minor issues, though you may want to replace the bow immediately. This doesn't come ready to go out of the box, you'll need to tune it, maybe reinstall the strings. There are no instructions. Hopefully your music teacher can help you with this. You may be able to find an online video for help. One final note - there are alternatives to buying new. I frequently see name brand instruments on the marketplace sites. And if you're lucky enough to have a music store in your area, they often rent or sell used/refurbished instruments. There are obvious advantages to going to a local music shop, where they offer warranties, can provide advice, tune up your instrument for you (often at no charge). So keep that in mind before making a decision. ... show more

  • Decent violin with okay resin
Size: 4/4-size
I've had issues with the resin getting on the bow, even after scratching it up a bit. Sadly, after many attempts, I have frilled the bow A TON due to trying to get the resin to stick. It does not sound good if the resin doesn't stick. The build quality is decent, the sound quality is, with good resin, nice. Sadly the bow feels like the cheapest piece. ... show more
