Ordered this tmobile-locked CAT S22 FLIP phone from here on amazon for like fifty bucks & received next day in the morning. This amazon renewed phone LOOKS LIKE A NEW PHONE. And YAY this tmobile-locked android flip phone works with my TextNow nano sim. TextNow is a free tmobile mvno. Insert the TextNow nano sim card & setup the textnow APN & install the TextNow app. Calls both outgoing & incoming work via textnow cellular data when you are away from your wifi. This phone has android11 (go edition) -- and my textnow app actually installs on this phone. Google Play System fortunately looks like it still gets updates. The display is touchscreen & therefore you can use android like on a regular smartphone. And the number keypad works too. Have always wanted an android flipphone like this CAT S22 FLIP to use with my textnow sim card for free calls & texts. LOL this flip is kinda like a poorman's substitute for a moto razr flip phone -- and just insert my textnow sim card to have free calls & txts as well as free essential data which provides free cellular data to power my calls & texts as well as my gmail & google maps when I'm on the go away from my wifi. FYI: This is IP68 waterproof & is a military-rugged MIL STD SPEC 810H heavy-duty durable phone. When folded shut, it's kinda like the size of a good-size fist-size rock that you can throw in self-defense. It's certainly bigger & tougher & more rugged than your old school dumb flip phones. However just as easy to use yet has smarts because it runs android -- and can take my textnow sim card for free calls & texts. Battery at 2000mAh could be better but I'm also ordering a better 3200mAh battery from here on amazon -- plus I'll have to restrict battery use on most apps -- and also should NOT go hog wild installing all sorts of apps particularly since only have 16GB storage on this phone.     • Perfect "dumb" phone for a grad student that needs focus
Coming from a flip phone with only talk and text, this thing is a fantastic way for me to keep the dumb phone philosophy and be able to use smart apps again. Just keep in mind that out of the box the thing is bloated to the brim with google spyware and is a slow, unresponsive battery pig. It took me hours to disable these apps and replace them with functioning open source apps from F-droid. Now it's just as responsive as my wife's iPhone and the battery lasts longer than hers now too, around 2-3 days with moderate usage for me. Some apps and webpages aren't properly developed for such a small screen though and can get cut off, but I can usually find a way around it if needed. Typing anything on the phone either using T9 typing or the onscreen keyboard is also perfectly inconvenient and uncomfortable enough that you really won't want to use it for media consumption, but everything does function properly and you can use smart apps when you really need them. Also since it runs android you can also use tools like universal android debloater to hard disable any app you want such as the browser or all the uninstallable google apps like YouTube. However I haven't found this to be necessary for me so far and I do want to be able to use these apps if I need them on the go. Other pros: It has a removable battery, so I bought a few extras to do battery swaps, so "charging" takes about a minute with this setup. Another small bonus is that I have better posture using the phone due to the positioning of the screen. Also, can we talk about the price? I'm pretty sure this phone MSRPed for around $300, but it seems like they are just trying to get rid of them now with these too good to be true prices. Modern day smartphones seem to be designed in every aspect to control the user rather than the other way around, big screens and a user experience that is way too easy and seamless. This phone allows me to use smart apps while also regaining the control these devices have taken from me by making the user experience clunky and painful enough that I want to spend as little time on this device as possible. ... show more

I have about 3 apps total on the phone: banking app, WhatsApp, gmail & the pre loaded apps. No notifications on for the apps beside gmail &call & text. Love the phone and got it so that it can have WhatsApp and call my mom. Just needed something simple and to be able to get directions or emails if it’s absolutely important for work. It’s not as heavy as I remember and you get use to the size. The battery seems to be draining somewhat easily. I’ll keep an eye on that but I love the phone it was in mint condition and I’m able to use it with mint mobile since it’s T-Mobile locked. It’s a great phone if you don’t want or need a smartphone but also need a few apps and can’t completely switch to a basic phone with just call and text. ... show more

    • Smart minimalism!
I am enjoying using this phone for a month. I look at this phone and all I want to do with it is call or text someone, otherwise, I don't touch it. I wanted a phone that allows me to use different apps. But just the essentials, which for me are: maps, whatsapp, airbnb, and an app for my job. I decided that whatever else I need to manage like banks, posts, social media page, I will do on my computer. Which is much more inducive to productivity. I also believe that carrying a phone/computer in your pocket everywhere you go it makes you use so much without realizing dependency and how many hours we spend on it that aren't helping us with productivity. Since I started using this flip phone I feel like I gained hours of meaningful research, exercise, and mental clarity. I bought this phone from Tmobile locked to try it with my Mint SIM card and it worked as I thought it would. I pay $15 per month with MINT. Which by itself helped me limit my internet usage via phone. But combined with the flip cat phone it really makes my life as a minimalist more focused and productive. With the mobile data on and using the phone for music and text, I have the battery last 3 days. Gps makes the battery drain faster as expected, just have a usb-c cable in the car to recharge it just like you would with your iphone. Overall 5 stars review from me! ... show more

I couldn't activate the phone because it reported imei number as zero. From what I have read it's due to a bad rom flash. I really wanted this phone too.

    • A not too smart not too dumb phone. Best as a "backup phone".
I broke my old phone (after four years), and I needed a cheap phone quick. At the price I paid for this one it's perfect as a emergency backup phone. While yes it's a Android phone it's functions are best for more traditional flip phone use not as a phone for those that do texting, Internet, and/or Social Media stuff. If you need to do such things a touch pen with a small tip is highly needed. Adult sized fingers will trigger the auto gesture which will result in a lot of backspacing (and cussing). Some apps will not work with Android GO, and some apps will not work correctly due to the resolution of the screen being too low of a resolution. Sound quality is adequate when held up to the ear, but works better in Bluetooth, or speakerphone mode. The external speaker for playing media, speakerphone, and the alarm is louder than most regular phones I had in the past. They did not provide a manual to the phone so I had to learn the quirky ways to get to certain functions like turning off running apps (Top Right Square Button). Phone reception is okay for a cheap phone, but since it is rugged the reception will be reduced a bit (you go from a 5 bar to a 4). My last phone was rugged (a Ulephone Armor), and had the same issue too. There is no headphone jack so you will need to use a USB Type-C to Headphone Jack adapter to use traditional wired headphones, or the FM Radio App (not provided with my phone). Also NO POWER BRICK was provided (both missing adapters is why you got a star deducted) they do give you a USB Type C cord (a short one TBH), but if you do not have a 5V 2.5amp power brick with a regulator chip it'll only charge in slow mode (this includes weaker amp chargers too). I luckily had one though I prefer to charge my stuff using my PC's USB ports. As for battery life it's fine for a 2000mah battery, but Battery Saver needs to be turned on after it's fully charged (will not allow you to do that until it reaches 100%). I also had to turn off the "auto turn off if plugged in" too. Also you need to FULLY turn off all apps your not using, or it'll drain your battery quicker. That said the life is around 6-8 hours of talk time if your screen is at 40% bright full brightness gets 3-5 hours that dose not include any running apps. Since I have not had this item for very long I can give you a good stand by time. If long life batteries are your top priority get a regular (non Android) flip phone, or a Android with a huge battery. As the title says "A not too smart not too dumb phone. Best as a "backup phone"", and I mean that fully. Once I get enough for a regular rugged smart phone. I will relegate this to a portable Bluetooth Music Player/Alarm Clock, and if something were to happen to the new phone I can at least fall back to this one easily (well until 4G is no longer used). This could also be good for a kids first phone too especially due to it's rugged nature. Oh to answer a question that even I had. This phone may be "locked" to T-Mobile, but if your provider uses the T-Mobile network (Mint, Metro, etc.) it should work without a hitch as long as you got a nano sim card. Installed my Mint Mobile sims and worked great, installed a few apps, virtual key board is small but works, you can use voice to text which works great if you don't like the small keyboard so far so good. Just had for a few days it's simple that's why I bought it, battery seems to be ok
