  • Excellent reference for the Canon 5D MKIII!
I recommend this book for any photographer that wishes to know as much as possible about the technical capabilities of their Canon 5D MKIII. The author does a very thorough job of revealing in a clear and understandable way every aspect of this fabulous camera. I am mystified why some reviewers complained about the use of icons throughout the book. I found the icons a very good shorthand way of familiarizing one with each control. Isn't it easier to just see an iconic picture of for instance the Quick Control Dial rather than adding many more words in the explanation? Our language evolved from a type of icon after all. I particularly found the section on the multiple hows and whys of the focus modes was very clear. Also, her explanation of exposure compensation and bracketing is very good. I formerly owned a 5D and then a 5D MKII. This author does the best job of explaining the mechanics of this camera of all the other books on photography I own. Buy it and you will find you will constantly go back and reread sections as you use your camera. It is not necessarily the book you want if you are looking for a how to book on photography technique. She includes good tips but the technical content and description of controls is the real strength of this book. ... show more

  • Great book
Bought the book used and it was in good shape. I haven’t read everything yet, but it’s an easy read. I like that you can skip to different chapters for instruction on specific topics.

  • Good intro to 5DIII
I found this guide to be very helpful in finding my way around the 5DIII. I have not read the book completely but it seems to cover all the features of the camera. I does not go into as much depth on some of the features as I would like, such as back button focusing, but there are plenty of other resources available for these features once you know your way around the camera. The guide is far more readable than the Canon Instruction Manuel and in that sense is a welcome substitute. ... show more

  • A truly useful guide
This is the first guide that I have ever read cover to cover and know that I will be going back to it in the future. This was a true rewrite from the 5D mark II and not just a marked up version. It was very well written and very logical. An especially useful item was that I was 90% able to set up all of the initial camera settings (there are a bunch) as recommended in the guide. The 10% were not as the guide recommended but were altered based on the guide's description. I read the guide before i even got the camera and felt like I was doing when the actual Mark III arrived. ... show more

  • Clearly written!
This 5D Mk III field guide is very well-written. It is easy to find the procedure of interest, and the steps to use it are clearly described. This camera is is both simple to use (point and shoot) and complicated to customize. Nevertheless, this book cuts through the noise to show you the essentials, while offering ways for the creative person to leverage what the camera has to offer. Well done! ... show more

  • Excellent guide
This guide is very practical and is task oriented. Even though I had had a Mark II for several years, there are enough changes to the Mark III (especially in focusing) that I have found this very helpful. I have worked my way through the book and find it an excellent refresher where the Mark III is similar to the Mark II, and a helpful learning tool as the to new systems in the Mark III. ... show more

  • Pages fall out; Not really a field guide
I almost never write reviews, but future readers need to know a few things about this book. One star as a field guide; three stars as a general reference, tops. – Several obvious errors. – Poor build quality; the pages come loose and fall out. As a basic guide to the 5D Mark III, the book is adequate. It covers basic use and setup well enough. As a “field guide,” however, it falls woefully short. It covers too much information. If you are in the field, you probably do not need, nor have the time to read about the difference between zoom and prime lenses, for example. A “field guide” does not need to explain such things. That is a minor issue, but details like that add to the size and bulk of a book meant to be carried in the “field.” If you are not going to carry this book with you, then it does not matter, but I would not call it a “field guide.” It is too big for the field, but too small for reference. Most of the information is useful, but some of it is just wrong. Changing aperture, for instance, does not change the focal length. Yet, the author says it does at least twice. Increasing ISO, for another instance, does not increase the signal-to-noise ratio, but lowers it. Again, these are minor issues, but it makes me wonder what other mis-information is in the book. The content is not really the main issue I have with this book. Most books have a mistake here and there. The publisher’s “build quality” is horrible, though. When I turn a page, it falls out. Yes, the pages simply and cleanly fall out after a couple of turns. I have read the book completely through one time. On the second pass, the pages came loose one at a time, and are no longer attached to the spline. Now, every single page in the middle third of the book is loose, and most of the rest remain attached by an inch or so, which will give up after the next turn. What I now have is a collection of individual pages, not a book. This “feature” makes it totally worthless as a “field guide,” and difficult to use as a reference book. A “field guide” needs to be to the point, accurate, and robust. It needs to stand up to more reading abuse, not less. It needs to cover topics needed in the field, more how-to, not why. It should not discuss things like what lens to buy. If you are using a camera in the 5D3 class, you probably know what lenses you need. If these issues do not bother you, then buy this book. But, if you are looking for a “field guide,” then look for something else. ... show more

  • Much better than the manual
This book is plain language (OK, you need to know something about cameras and photography to understand it all). I'm reading it cover to cover, and not getting it all, but I know I'll use it as a reference book when I'm ready for that particular feature of this magnificent camera. I upgraded several steps when I bought this camera so there are a lot of features I don't even know it has, much less how to use them. But I'm going to grow into this camera and this book will be by my side. P.S.: I always buy this book when I buy a camera, which I've done 4 times now. ... show more
