Description

Originally released in February 1973 on the ABC Dunhill Record label, in the US, and on the UK Philips label in May 1973, Cameo is one of Dustys most overlooked albums, featuring some of her greatest vocal performances of the era on material written by major songwriters including David Gates, Ashford & Simpson and Van Morrison. Recorded in the US between July and October 1972, Cameo was produced by Steve Barri, Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter who later went on to write and produce major hits for Glen Campbell and The Four Tops, among others. A stellar line-up of musicians contribute to the superb sound (including members of the famous Wrecking Crew), Hal Blaine, Larry Carlton, Wilton Felder, Carol Kaye, Michael Omartian, Venetta Fields and Clydie King. Among the many highlights are Learn to Say Goodbye a masterpiece of tortured soul, with a sublime string arrangement, the brilliant opening track Who Gets Your Love and David Gates' heart-breaking The Other Side of Life. Her beautiful rendition of Van Morrisons Tupelo Honey even transcends the masters original. Ashford & Simpsons soul stomper I Just Wanna Be There bounces along on a Motown-style groove, horns and backing vocals creating the wave for Dustys magical voice to ride. There are five Lambert and Potter originals, including Comin' and Goin', a number one single that never was! Classic Dusty LP, unavailable on vinyl since 1973! For it's 50th anniversary, a special edition replicating the original US gatefold edition with enhanced artwork. Pressed on heavyweight BLUE vinyl!

  • A True Gem!
This is my favorite Dusty Springfield album! It's just a shame it got lost in the shuffle and never got the real recognition it deserved until years later. Dusty is a true legend, that magnificent soulful voice was one of a kind. There are some really great classics on "Cameo" including "Who Gets Your Love", "Coming and Going" and the minor hit "The Other Side Of Life". If you are a Dusty Springfield fan and you've never heard this album, then treat yourself......you won't be disappointed! ... show more

  • As always, Dusty reigns
Dusty Springfield couldn't make a less than moving LP, even when she was singing disco (she and Nina Simone). Only one caveat with this CD - buy "Beautiful Soul" instead which includes the whole 'Cameo' LP and the unreleased (and partially unfinished) recordings for the never-issued 'Longings'. There is a masterpiece or two there, and actually a better LP than "Cameo" even in it's incomplete state. The title song is perhaps the most moving song she ever sang. ... show more

  • Classic Dusty
One of Dusty's best albums from the 1970s. Funky and soulful.

  • Rare,forgotten album
The first shock is the sound - to all of us,used to her grandiose 1960s arrangements and melodramatic ballads, this is completely new, toned down and basically very simple approach - little backing band and clear, precise, unfussy arrengemts. Than Springfield comes along with her willowy & whispery siren-like voice and it's Dusty all over again, instantly recognisable and adorable. Compared with her such heavy-weights like her previous two albums ("Dusty in Memphis" and"From Dusty, with love") this one sounds little paler because it's not her particular blue-eyed soul brand but curiously conscious step into mainstream pop land, radio friendly and somehow weaker material. She sparks on Ashford & Simpson's "I Just Wanna Be There" and Van Morrison's "Tupelo Honey" but it's not enough to lift the whole album from its MOR base - which is pity, because Springfield is great artist and I wish she had better luck with the songs. It's pleasant ,but too muc of it sounds like a safe bet,a true sign that something's wrong. ... show more
