  • Excellent amplifier, lack of features may put some people off.
This is a ‘What Hi Fi’ best buy and is currently on sale at $599, which is somewhat of a bargain. Get one before they are all gone... I believe that they are being replaced with a newer model The one I ordered came shipped from ‘World Wide Stereo’ which seems to be a trusted seller of hi fi gear and they provided excellent service.
I did end up (very sadly) returning this product after having decided to replace it with something else. I decided that a network receiver would suit my needs better. The CXA61 does have a digital input board but it is not a network streamer. To stream on line music services, a separate streamer (e.g. WiiM pro plus or Cambridge Audio MXN10) needs to be purchased.
The CXA61 is excellent in both sound and build quality. It is one of the very few (if not the only) amplifiers at this price that has a substantial toroidal transformer right in the middle of the unit and large 'cast' heat sinks set either side of the transformer… very impressive at this price point. This, no doubt, contributes too the clean sound and shear ‘grunt’ and ‘power’ of this amplifier. It’s power output seems to far surpass it’s 60 watts per channel rating. The CXA’s digital board with it’s ESS Sabre DAC provides excellent digital to analog conversion (whether using USB, Optical or Coax in) and streaming using bluetooth to the unit also provides for excellent quality sound.
I used a WiiM pro plus to stream to the amp. (using an optical connection) and the sound was very good. Using Tidal’s desktop app (hi fi ‘plus’ tier with ‘exclusive’ mode on) from my laptop’s USB to the CXA's USB input provided the best sound in my opinion.
My main disappointment (and reason for return) was two fold. First, the 3.5mm headphone jack socket on the amp. annoyed me. Using phones equipped with 1/4” jacks means using a 3.5mm to 1/4” adapter and this potentially puts strain on the amplifiers female jack socket. Much better in my opinion to have a 1/4” socket on the amp. and allow the user to use a 1/4” to 3.5mm adapter providing a far more robust and secure connection.
Second, I figured that I could plug a headphone amp into the CXA’s ‘pre outs’ (on the rear of the amp.). This is possible BUT muting the speakers shuts off the pre outs! The user manual strongly suggests that the ‘pre outs’ are primarily designed for a powered subwoofer, which is somewhat redundant as there is also a dedicated LFE subwoofer out (which is the more common way to connect a sub these days). This was the deal breaker for me. I use headphones a lot and don’t want the speakers to stay on whilst doing so. With an amp. connected to the CXA's pre outs, turning down the volume on the CXA results in turning down the output from the pre outs… thus sending no signal to the headphone amp.!
If the above quibbles don’t bother you then, IMHO, you cannot currently buy an amplifier of this quality for anywhere near $599! It is clean, detailed, musical and authoritative. It reproduces the music the way that it was recorded. Be warned that badly recorded/badly mastered material will sound bad. Some people might not like this ‘warts and all’ presentation and with no tone controls available you will not be able to smooth out badly mastered source material. Also be aware that, if you are using a turntable with a moving magnet cartridge you will need a phono pre amp as the CXA61 does not have a moving magnet phono input. Cambridge Audio’s own Alva Solo is currently on sale for $199 and I would imagine that it would pair well with this unit. ... show more

  • Upgraded and Modernized
Came well packed with two outer boxes (3 in total). With the amount of clean power and advancement in technology packed into a quality build, it definitely feels like a step up from my old amp. The remote has a heft to it that speaks quality, too. I am no audiophile. For a decade I enjoyed digital music through USB and aptX HD Bluetooth connections to a NAD D 3020 and a pair of bookshelf speakers as well as NAD Viso 1 portable speakers. That setup served me well till about a year ago when I started ripping my collection of CDs to flac files and moved a copy of my digital music collection to the SD card of my Astell&Kern player. At times I felt my 4-ohm bookshelf speakers could benefit from more power when the output gain was too low, and a line connection between the player and the amp clearly sounded better than the aptX HDconnection. Not anymore with the CXA61. I got power to spare for my (mostly) casual listening and the newer DAC greatly reduced the SQ gap between line and Bluetooth connections. Also, replacing the factory Bluetooth antenna with a taller, higher-gain one (8-10 dBi) from an old wifi router seemed to have boosted the reception and thereby improved the Bluetooth sound further to my ears. I think I am good for another decade with this new amp. It’s a good match with my other components and that’s what a sound system is all about. On the other hand, having heard the difference the advance in technology (with regard to the DAC) makes, I am intrigued to try marrying new technology (external DAC) with old fossils (restored old, warm amps or tubes) next time around. But that’s just the tinkering side of me calling. With quality product and sweet deal like this, I may just buy the future iteration and listen to quality music while tinkering with something else. ... show more

  • Gorgeous design and sound
First thing that impressed me was the build quality. You open the box and can immediately tell it's a high-quality well-built and beautiful piece of equipment. Very simple controls, the volume knob is huge and very sensitive. I also liked how they designed the bottom legs - thry provide great stability and ventilation when stacking. The sound is absolutely gorgeous. I hooked up my turntable, a CD player, a subwoofer and a pair of KEF LS50's and was blown away by the sound quality and the soundstage. The sound is all around you. Perhaps the best part is bass - punchy, detailed and not overblown. The unit has plenty of power and I barely ever have to turn the volume knob past 9 o'clock. CXA61 replaces a NAD D3020 v2 that I have had for about a year. NAD was good but definitely does not have enough power and does have some weird quirks. One downside I have encountered so far is the remote control. Has tons of unnecessary buttons that you can't use unless you buy more of company's equipment. Also, the volume steps on the remote are way too large. Goes from too quiet to too loud in one click. The knob on the unit itself is way more sensitive and allows minute adjustments which is nice. Another downside is not being able to control volume from your smartphone when connected through Bluetooth. The bluetooth volume gets set at some fixed level and you need to adjust it either through remote or the volume dial on the amplifier. Would is be nice to have some sort of EQ controls or filtering? Sure. In this sense, the CXA61 got compared to an iphone somewhere and I agree. Simple, thought out and not a lot of customizations. It sounds so good though that you don't even need them. I have an external EQ from Schiit and an EQ on my phone that I can use anyway for the times I feel rebellious. ... show more
