This applies to the Bush Desk Hutch, Bush 5-shelf bookcase, and Bush lateral file drawer. Assembly of the 3 pieces involved very many pieces with hundreds of screws and dowels. Nothing was missing and every piece fit perfectly. We have books on the bookcase with no sag. The file drawers work very smoothly. The instructions were clear. Many steps, each piece took 2 to 3 hours with my wife and me working together. The pieces are generally particle board, but a "nice" particle board if such a thing exists. The trim pieces are MDF. Tighten the screws, but don't over tighten (avoid the temptation to use a drill or impact driver; a ratcheting screwdriver is your friend). Use extra glue. They have a lot of screws and brackets, and the finished products are pretty sturdy. They would not survive a long-distance move, they're not that sturdy. But for light use in a home office or spare room they're fine. Biggest complaint -- the backs of the hutch and bookcase are just cardboard. Looks ok, but just cheesy. How much more would it cost to use 1/8" particle board? But bottom line -- they are somewhat better than we expected for the price. Good value. ... show more

These shelves were just what we needed. They were easy to put together and appear to be serving our purpose well. We ordered two of these for our needs and wanted to check them out for possible use in another location. The thing is, there are 3 shelves which are fixed and the bottom of the bottom shelf is unfinished. That is fine and how it should be however we received 2 bottom shelves for one of the units. So we have a bottom shelf fixed in place where the middle shelf, which is finished on both sides, should be. We needed to get these taken care of so we put them together anyway. You can see the two bottom shelves in place on the photo. If it had of been another part we probably could not have used it at all. We like them but thought it would be important to know this. I tried to find how to contact the seller before I wrote this review however I couldn't find how to do so. If I hear from them I will update this review to let you know how it turns out. ... show more

I LOVE this bookcase! The value for the money is great. It looks nice and is sturdy enough to hold my hardback books. It's not a solid wood bookcase, but it's definitely a step up from a cheap Ikea one. I bought it used too so it was only $100. I definitely recommend if you don't want to pay a ton of money, but need something that gets the job done and isn't an eyesore! ... show more

    • Arrived cracked - buyer BEWARE!

Despite several reviews stating this bookcase arrived damaged, I took a chance. I ordered 2 of these and hoped for the best. Well, 1 of the 2 was broken along the longest side panel. I knew the second I saw the boxes which one was going to have a problem because the box was "flexed and curved" where 2 people had picked up on the ends. Sure enough, opened it up and both side panels were cracked all the way across and halfway through. **** The sad part about this is there is a picture ON THE BOX FROM THE MANUFACTURER that shows 2 people carrying the box by the ends, so can't really blame the shipper. They are doing just as the manufacturer says by lifting on the ends and flexing this box. **** So, instead of going through the headache of repacking, taping, & shipping this 80 lb. pound box back, here's what I did: These were for my son's room, so once they are up, they won't be moved and they aren't a display piece in my livivng room or anything, so.... I bought some gorilla wood glue and filled the crack and allowed to dry. I did this repeatedly 3 times over a day and put it together the next day. It went together easily, and is holding up fine. I have no worries about the stability of it, though again, it's not holding a ton of weight nor is it holding anything precious or expensive. **** Now, I know I should've returned it and punished the company for their poor packing and shipping, but once you have this thing opened and laid out, it's just a headache that I didn't want to deal with, so their punishment is this review. I WOULD NOT BUY AGAIN, AND I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOKCASE! BUY LOCALLY WHERE YOU CAN SEE THE BOX BEFORE LEAVING THE STORE, AND IF IT HAS A BOW OR CURVE TO THE BOX, GET A DIFFERENT BOX! I bought this during the covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and all stores were closed, so my choices were limited. I hope this review will save someone a headache. ... show more

I've put a lot of furniture together and so when this bookcase arrived, I expected to have a 2+ hour assembly time ahead of me. I was impressed to find that the instructions were very easy to follow and I had the bookcase put together in a little less than an hour. It is a little more involved than some bookcases, but that's because it has a decorative border/cap on the top. I love the manufactured character that is put into this piece of furniture. It looks very classy. Even though assembly was pretty standard, I did run into one problem. The finishing tacks used to attach the backing were a bit weak. I would tap on the nails a couple of times to get it started and then the nail would snap off on the tip. This happened on more than one tack. The problem with this is that since the tip of the tack snapped off in the bookcase, I can't put another one in its place with the pre-stamped guide holes on the backing. Other than that, this seems to be a very sturdy bookcase with a unique look. ... show more
