It works great in soft and/or moist soil. I used it this summer in some dry soil and it's starting to bend at the base a bit as a result of the dry, compacted soil.

This handy, lightweight little guy makes planting rows of flowers a breeze. It's very easy to use and eliminates the need for hand-digging with a trowel (and significantly reduces the associated back and knee pain the next day). I wish I had bought one ten years ago, but now I'm buying one for everyone I know! I have only used it in my flowerbeds with fairly soft soil, so I can't say how effective it would be in hard dirt, but it's perfect for my needs.

This tool is amazing it made planting all my flower bulbs so easy. I would push down and pull out the dirt and my granddaughter would drop the bulbs in the hole. The dirt was also easily dispensed right back into the hole. Where has this been? Very sturdy tool.

Please note that this planter only digs a hole about 4 inches deep. It looked good, and I bought it to plant some lily bulbs, but the bulbs were recommended to be planted 6 to 8 inches deep. I ended up buying a Ryobi auger with a bit that would go down to 8 inches.
