Description

A bug flies through an open door into a house, through a bathroom, across a kitchen and bedroom and into a living room ... where its entire life changes with the switch of a button. Sucked into the void of a vacuum bag, this one little bug moves through denial, bargaining, anger, despair and eventually acceptance -- the five stages of grief -- as it comes to terms with its fate. Will there be a light at the end of the tunnel? Will there be dust bunnies in the void? A funny, suspenseful and poignant look at the travails of a bug trapped in a vacuum. Read more

  • A gem of a book! Poignant, wise, fumy and beautifully illustrated
Format: Hardcover
This is an amazing book. My son is obsessed with vacuums, but I thought it would be too scary for him, so I didn't get it until a librarian recommended it. However, it has a happy ending so not too scary. It is funny with hilarious little products advertising the five stages of grief. It is poignant. It has a primary plot (bug in a vacuum) and a secondary plot as Napoleon, the dog who lost his chew toy to the vacuum, also goes through the five stages of grief and then lets go and meets his Josephine. The various ways the bug illustrates each stage or poignant and useful for kids. The drawings are as beautiful as a bug in a vacuum could possible be and there is an underlying sense of humor that keeps me happy to read it 5 or more times a day. ... show more

  • A picture book with a message for children and adutls
Format: Hardcover
I work in the local library and found this book by chance. The title caught my attention, so I took a quick look and feel in love with this picture book. I have two grandchildren, ages 3 & 6 , and I knew I had to get a copy for them. The amazing thing about this book is that it incorporates the 5 stages of grieving into the story line in an amazingly fluid manner. The 5 stages of grieving were identified years agog by Dr. Helen Kuebler-Ross and they are universally experienced by anyone going trough any type of significant loss, of course inclusive of death. This book is a wonderful tool to teach children that any major loss is natural and can be overcome as they move through the stages. Outstanding concept and a wonderful child's story. ... show more

  • Super!
Format: Hardcover
I heard this author on CBC Canada radio and by the time she finished her talk I was on Amazon ordering the book for my granddaughter. She loves it! Can't give more details since she lives down south and I live up north but I send gifts all the time and never hear a word back but this I got a response to so it must be good. Ya, ya, I know - people are busy and she herself will thank me when she is old enough to write but for a now I got feedback from daughter-in-law! Yay! I guess that means my daughter-in-law liked it to. I do know the author said she put the 5 stages of grieving in it so kids will understand when they lose something important to them or want something very badly that they can not have they will understand others too feel this way. ... show more

  • Great Book
Format: Hardcover
I've had this book for several years and used it to help students with grief. Now I am retired but I came across it while packing up a few things and I know this book will be great for children experiencing issues with Covid-19 shut down. I plan to pass my copy on to a niece who teaches 2nd grade.

  • Wonderfully creative book with intricate illustrations
Format: Hardcover
Utterly creative. Readers follow the story of a fly caught in a vacuum through the text, and observe a parallel story featuring the pet dog through the illustrations. If you really pay attention, objects in the background of initial illustrations end up in the vacuum illustrations later. My child enjoys recognizing and matching these objects between the pages. The text works in humorous psychology elements that make it fun for adults to read too. ... show more

  • Beautiful art work and cute story
Format: Hardcover
I got this book for my sister for her birthday. I give children's books instead of cards because they are always so cute. The art work in this book is AMAZING. I spent more time looking at each page and it in. The books is super cute, the story takes you through the stages of grief in a light hearted silly way. It makes you chuckle. I am gonna have to get a copy for myself! ... show more

  • Clever Story
Format: Hardcover
Much to my dismay...my 4 year old granddaughter loves this book and wants me to read it every time we read books. We had a library copy but I bought her one of her own. She does pronounce Vacuum in a cute way...she says gackume. It is cleverly written to be both entertaining to a child and an adult.

  • Highly Recommended by Psychologist
Format: Hardcover
As a child psychologist I'm always looking for better ways to help kids cope with grief. This book is a wonderful blend of creative wit and emotional processing. It makes the stages of grief easy to understand, while never discussing death, which can be triggering for some. I've even had some adult clients say they better understood grief after reading it. ... show more
