  • Kit's new book with multiple endings gives even more excitement!!
Format: Kindle
As an adult reader (and collector of AG dolls) and a person fascinated with both historical fiction and non-fiction, I must give 5 stars to the author of this "choose your ending" book. I generally do NOT like "choose your ending". However, the AG historical dolls lend themselves well to this genre, because there ARE so many different ways the stories could go. I chose to read the book straight through (which is somewhat clueless because the stories do not combine well) because I am miserable when I have choices. This way I could discover all the alternatives and I felt it made the stories more real. Once again AG makes a hit! So much for us to learn about the Great Depression at this period of recession in our own times. Every tale of Kit is gripping right to the finish! ... show more

  • An American Girl Living through the Great Depression …
Format: Paperback
My 8-year old daughter is big fan of American Girl dolls, has a budding interest in history and enjoys stories of adventure. I was both intrigued and excited to see the American Beforever Journey series that allows girls to see/experience how other girls their age lived through certain periods of America’s history. FULL SPEED AHEAD: MY JOURNEY WITH KIT details a current day girl’s journey back to the trying times of the Great Depression where she discovers how someone her age lived. In an age of high-tech gadgetry and the convenience, entertainment and luxury they offer, I felt this book offered a great opportunity for my daughter to see what life might have been like when push-buttons, video screens and car-rides weren’t part of daily life. The book is written form the perspective of a current middle-school-aged girl (Lulu) who stumbles upon a magical camera box and is transported back to 1933 (amid the Great Depression) where she meets Kit, a same-aged girl experiencing a much different life. From the start, it is made clear that Kit does not have the same luxuries that Lulu has … Kit’s family home is small and modestly furnished, much of the family’s food comes from a garden, money concerns impact all family decisions and Kit IS the family’s dishwasher. Regardless, Lulu discovers that despite the financial difficulties, Kit’s behavior and outlook on life really doesn’t differ much from her own. Rather than just writing a straight-forward journey, FULL SPEED AHEAD offers a variety of alternate experiences and outcomes for the reader. Along Lulu’s journey with Kit, they face a myriad of decisions that affect the story and the reader gets to choose which decision to make and follow its resulting path (the choice the reader makes will direct her to the page that continues that particular storyline). This format allows the reader to experience a variety of outcomes which adds an element of excitement and adventure generated by “what if” scenarios. The end of book includes a chapter that provides a brief summary of Kit’s era that gives a general idea of the impact the Great Depression had on American families, giving a historical perspective to Kit’s fictional story. Overall, FULL SPEED AHEAD has a happy, uplifting tone and is full of adventure. My daughter loved being offered the variety of alternate paths which had her flipping back and forth to experience each outcome. While the book touches on the challenges faced by families during the Great Depression, it doesn’t dwell in the misery that so often describes this period of American history. If anything, FULL SPEED AHEAD illustrates how one can find happiness and hope when facing adversity. I really like the historical aspect this series of books provides and my daughter is already asking for the book detailing the journey of the American Girl who grew up in my era (Julie in the 1970s). ... show more

  • Entertaining Stories With Multiple Endings Teach "Life Lessons" About Gratitude, Generosity, Hard Work
Format: Paperback
In FULL SPEED AHEAD, a magical box camera found in a box of vintage clothing transports a contemporary 9-year-old girl back in time from her "humungous super-sleek apartment" to a makeshift Cincinnati boardinghouse in September 1933. As an only child living in a single-parent household, the narrator longs for the company of a pet dog. In the 1933 world, she befriends Kit Kittredge, a cheerful, resourceful girl about her same age, and finds a wiggly stray golden retriever puppy that seems to think he belongs to her. Kit shows the narrator a hobo jungle and long soup kitchen lines, explains how her family is managing to just scrape by during the Depression by converting their large home into a boardinghouse and working hard to keep it going, and teaches the narrator to ride a trolley. The book is a collection of stories with multiple endings, endings that depend on the choices the reader makes for the first-person narrator. For example, on page 8, when the narrator is mistaken for Kit's Cousin Lucille outside the boardinghouse, the reader can choose for the narrator "(t)o go in and meet Grace (Kit's dog)" (and skip to page 20 to continue the story), or can choose "(t)o tell Kit I'm not Cousin Lucille" (and skip to page 11 to continue the story). The multiple story continuations are handled well. The advice at each ending "(t)o read this story another way and see how different choices lead to a different ending, turn back to page XX" suggests to me that each different choice will produce different results or consequences--but this isn't really what happens. The stories are all different, but all lead to endings that teach the same "life lessons" about the book's main themes--being grateful for the things one has, caring for one's possessions (in a tidy room), being generous by sharing what one can with others, and demonstrating the personal responsibility that goes with pet ownership. (For the ending of one story, the reader must visit the American Girl "Beforever" web site, but this seems to be separate from the doll shopping site.) The book doesn't teach a whole lot about the history of the Great Depression, but I enjoyed reading all of the stories, and would be happy to have any child of mine reading them. This particular "Beforever" book is particularly appropriate for a lonely child who is longing for a pet and for more companionship with her babysitter and/or working mother. ... show more

  • Takes reading to another level.
Format: Paperback
It's refreshing to see the books that provide a different story depending on choices you make. That is what this book presents to kids. You read the story, then at some point, you are faced with a decision to make. Either one way or the other. You are instructed to turn to certain pages depending on those choices. I remember reading these kind of books as a kid. Then, I got into the whole "Zork" series of games where you read the story and you would type in what you wanted to do and the game would do it. These kind of books are great for kids because not only is there a story, you can choose the outcome of the story. Books are educational already, but when you add a decision making factor to it, the books become a whole new level. What would be an even greater level is if depending on the choices made, you would buy an entire book!!! And that would lead to another book, now that would be cool. ... show more
