Although this radio may not have the best RF specs out there in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, and power output, it approaches ideal in many other aspects. First of all, it combines the three most popular VHF FM bands in one handy radio. Other manufafturers make radios like this at much higher prices, and as a result, they are not common. Western Nevada, and especially the Reno area where I live, has more repeaters per capita than just about anywhere else in the US, the result of the very mountanious surrounding terrain. This makes a radio like this especially handy, as it can work just about any repeater it can 'see'. In other respects, it is fairly easy to operate. All the important features a radio needs are there. They just might be a little more hidden than on the more expensive radios. The somewhat lackluster RF performance disadvantage can be mostly overcome by using a quality aftermarket antenna, and there are many choices out there. I use a triband antenna, also offered by Btech, and it helps tremendously. These radios are indestructible, but they are well-built, and easily withstand day-to-day abuse, like their dual band brethern. All batteries, accessories, etc. are interchangeable between the dual and tri band models, meaning if you already have an acessorized, UV-5R, this radio is an inexpensive and logical step up. And at the price, it behooves one to invest in several radios and keep them where you need them, as well as in emergency prepardness kits. Lastly, there is the programming issue. Some folks say these radios are hard to program. They really aren't. They just program very differently than most of the other handheld transceivers out there. Once you get used to the way programming works, you will come to like its simplicity. Of course, they are easily programmed with a computer and an inexpensive programming cable. The programming doftware is even open source. In the meantime, these radios work like virtually any other radio in VFO ('frequency') mode. I think SDR=based radios are the future for many things. The immense popularity of these radios (both dual and tri band) attests to their general usefulness. If you really need high performance, use one of the expensive, 'name brand' radios out there (and I haven't gotten rid of my 'expensive' radios). But for routine day-to-day use, it is very hard to beat these little radios. I already have two of these radios (plus 2 dual band UV-5R's), and plan to get a couple more.

Pro -220 MHz band -Display sync -Memory scan add/remove -Editable memory slots -VFO scan range -Included antennas MUCH better than most rubber ducks Con -Box has two antennas ( 144/440 and 220 ) instead of one tri-band antenna -Transmit limited to 5W, not 8W -Subtle clicking noise on receive -No AM broadcast receive -Dislay Sync disables dual frequency watch Overall I don't think I can add anything that hasn't been already said about the Baofeng 5R family. If you're a newly licensed amateur, a 5R is an inexpensive first-step to see if you want to get more serious about the hobby. If you don't, you at least have something for use in emergencies. If you want to go for a killer handheld or base station, you haven't sunk a lot of money into the 5R to prevent you from upgrading ( and it's a fantastic little backup unit ). While the big feature of the 5X3 is the inclusion of the 1.25m / 220 MHz band for North American use, hiding under the surface are a lot of other creature comfort and ease-of-use features the 5R and BF-F8HP don't have. Chief among these is Display Sync, which locks the A and B lines of the display together, useful for seeing both the frequency and the memory name at the same time. Note that assigning names to memory slots requires a programming cable, an additional purchase I highly recommend, especially getting a certified one, not a cheap knock-off cable that requires special drivers and workarounds. Also, using Display Sync also disables the dual watch feature of monitoring two frequencies at the same time. Speaking of memory slots, the 5X3 also lets you edit the CTCSS/DCS codes and offsets of memory slots from the keypad without needing to first delete the memory and recreate the whole thing. You can also add and remove memories from the scan list, though sadly there is no keypad shortcut and you have to go in through the menu for each channel. Scanning on the VFO side also supports frequency ranges, so instead of scanning all of 144 - 148 MHz, you can tell it to only bother with 146 - 147, or other subsets ( it has to be a full integer MHz, so you can't scan just 146.5 - 147.75, etc ). The included antennas are much better than the standard ducks. I had simplex roundtables ( about 2 miles radius for all parties ) and easily hit repeaters 40 miles away. Sound quality reports came back good. Still, a good aftermarket antenna will do better. My Smiley 27000 telescoping tri-band lets me hit a popular repeater 35 miles away on 1W xmit power and another repeater cluster 55 miles away on high xmit power, 144, 220, and 440 MHz bands. This brings up two big downsides. Instead of including one tri-band antenna, you get a 144/440 antenna and one 220 antenna. Switching them out and keeping track of both can be a hassle. Also, xmit power is capped at 5W, not 8W like the 82HP andF8HP. Right about now is the time someone chimes in saying the antenna on a handheld makes a much bigger difference than the extra 3W. Yes, that's true to a point. But that extra 3W combined with a good antenna can make a notable, if moderate, improvement on useful range, particularly if you have minor RF obstructions between you and your repeater of choice. Sound quality from the speaker and included headset are not great, but more than good enough for most users. My set has a faint repeating clicking noise in the background whenever receiving ( regardless of listening to repeaters or simplex, so I know it's the handset ) that's mildly annoying, but doesn't get in the way. Strangely it isn't present when listening to FM broadcast radio. Though speaking of broadcast, the 5X3 doesn't receive AM broadcast, a real shame. All told, I consider the 5X3 to be the better purchase than the F8HP. Yes, losing that extra 3W power stings a little, but gaining a whole new band as well as the selective scan list and display sync make up for it, and I don't even live in a heavy 1.25m traffic area. Those that live in places that do use the 220 MHz band will benefit from it even more.

A very nice tri-band radio. It just recently was given full FCC clearance: FCC ID: 2AGND-5X3 Its very easy to program when you additionally purchase from Amazon the BTECH PC03 FTDI programming cable (well worth the price) It has a nice loud sound and works well. You can't beat the price for this unit too. I would give it 5 stars except that the sma antenna connection is male on the unit instead of the normal female. Additionally having to switch between the 220MHz antenna from the 2M/70cm band is a lot less convenient then just including a Trobriand antenna. I'm sure this was done for cost purposes. I picked up from Amazon the Authentic Genuine Nagoya NA-320A Triband HT antenna, with the radio because of that, and it is also inexpensive and well worth the purchase when you get this radio. The only thing that bugs me though is the bright rapidly alternating blue/red flashing base charger. I can't keep it on my desk because that is too distracting. A lower lumen, slower flashing light would be much better, though black electrical tape may work too . So overall 4.5 stars. All in all this has been a great addition to my shack, and

If you love to be prepared, BUY one of these and learn to use it now. In a SHTF situation, cell service may be interrupted or non-existent. Having one of these radios for each of your family members is one way to ensure you can stay in touch during a disaster. Please read up on what the FCC "allows" you to do with these radios as far as broadcasting goes. Because during a total meltdown, all we'll be thinking about is RULES, right? The good: Cheaper versions of the Bao Feng radio typically offer TWO bands, This version gives you three: VHF, 1.25M, and UHF, making the BTECH UV-5X3 exceptionally versatile. Charges using USB-C, and can easily be charged with a portable solar charger. You can use ANY USB-c cable. This kit comes with UV-5X3 Radio, USB-C 1500mAh Battery, V-85 Dual Band Antenna, 220MHz Single Band Antenna, Charger, 110V Adapter, Earpiece, Wrist Strap, Belt Clip, and The Dreaded and Often Discarded User's Manual, which is exceptionally (ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ) detailed and thorough for a manual. Resist the temptation to chuck it in the rubbish bin. You'll need it, especially if you are a beginner like me. Now, during the Zombie Apocalypse, you won't have time to learn about all the functions of this radio. So, I suggest that if you are purchasing this, you set aside 30-45 minutes a day to watch YT videos on Bao Fengs. There are many of those out there, most are overly technical and boring. I like NotARubicon Productions' many BF videos. Easy to understand and not filled with ham radio operator-speak. These videos will definitely jumpstart your learning and give you many shortcuts and useful tips. Whatever you do- start learning how to use the radio or it will be a worthless paperweight during a crisis. All that aside, this is a well-made, thoughtfully designed radio. It's low price may have true SAD HAMS wrinkling their noses in disgust, but this little gem works well for nearly everyone else. It is one of the most popular and widely-available radios in the world. So if you hike, snowmobile, camp, hunt, ski, etc. any outdoor activity where cell service is poor or non-existent, having a solid two-way radio is essential to your safety and well-being. Love this and am looking forward to discovering everything it can do. PS: I also purchased the BaoFeng Radio Bible by Cooper Hartman. It's a little technical, but provides some insights into what this radio's capabilities truly are.

i am a cw morse code person have been a ham for over 25 years. moving back into the city im unable too put a antenna on the roof so its back too uhf\vhf. this radio works well an in the city there is a lot of inter mod it hits all the repeaters on the money an really good on battery power i mean i left it on all day by mistake an it was still able to hit the other repeaters the only down size is it takes quite a while for the battery too recharge. the book is ok also you can read it an if your a ham. one more thing :O) you know as an active ham we are always on the go. well i dropped it twice not meaning too but i did being real upset in my mind i said ohhh shh so later on after the shock i turned it on an it came through an its working so well now i forgot i dropped it but im more careful now an for the price it is its a great present for your sons or daughters or disabled hams who cant afford too buy a tribander. great job you guys :O)

Great little HT, for the money and all the things it can do. At this price do not expect a very selective tight receiver, but it does get the job done for strong and moderate signals. It can Rx/Tx and 2 meters, 70cm and 220 Mhz. Add to all that MURS, GMRS and Marine frequencies. FM commercial broadcast and Weather Rx. Even small little flashlight/blinking warning light. All these features in a small tiny package. Word of advice: Install a good quality third party 144/220/4440 rubber duckie antenna. Keep the other two OEM small antennas for backup and use in tight, short range communicatons.

This was my first Chinese HT. I have owned several from the big three over the past 30 years. I opted for the UV-5x3 due to the mostly positive reviews of the UV-5R and addition of 220. The UV-5R is actually discontinued so the ones you see being sold on Amazon are either old stock or of questionable authenticity. This can be verified by visiting BTech's storefront, you won't find a single UV-5R. At this price point the UV-5x3 is an excellent value and almost a steal. They've eliminated all the previous bugs of the UV-5R and gave us the much underutilized 220mhz band as added candy. It performs well on all bands and about what you'd expect for a 4W HT. The supplied flexible antennas are a compromise but work well for shorter distances. I wished they provided a single tri-band antenna rather than one for 220 and one for 144/440 but there are so many affordable after-market antennas on Amazon this becomes a non-issue. Construction is very good but not equal to some Icom, Kenwood and Yaesu handhelds. Still, it's a very durable $60 radio and not $300+. As others have mentioned with the UV-5R, the UV-5x3 can be tedious to program via the keypad, it's essentially the same interface. Programming with a computer and CHIRP will make your life MUCH easier and highly recommended. Do yourself a favor and purchase the PC03 FTDI cable, it's not worth being a cheap ham and risk getting a bogus Prolific programming cable to save $8-10. My only wish for the UV-5x3 would be 200 memory channels rather then 127. Otherwise I don't know of any other radio on the market that gives you this much for so little. Now for my soapbox commentary: These cheap Chinese HT's are great for a new ham on a tight budget. I can't imagine how many of these have brought newcomers into the hobby of amateur radio, this is a good thing. On the flip side, I'm sure since these are so affordable and transmit on such a wide frequency range there's an equal amount polluting the airwaves illegally on GMRS, FRS, business band, and yes, the amateur bands. I have recently heard transmissions of what normally would be found on the CB band emanating from a wide coverage 2 meter statewide system. This will not get you any brownie points in the amateur community. Please folks, make a little effort to know what's legal or not. Getting your ham Tech license is a trivial process compared to what it used to be.

Originally I really liked this product, it seemed to have perfect functionality and worked very well for the first few weeks. I bought 3 radios, spare batteries antennas, an external mic and a programing cable. It is easy to program , one file for 3 radios and the base radio BETCH 25x4. The mobile radio was the first to stop working after few days, the radio locks on TX, power is good but not returning to RX. Very disappointed for the first time, I returned the radio and on the very same day, the 2nd UV-5x3 drained the battery to zero. A few hours later I replaced the battery and a second disappointment: the radio lost power for no reason. I was able to talk with the radios inside my house but not able to open any repeater. Today, just few days after the second return, I when I was with my 3 grandsons at our family picnic,my idea was to show them the radio while talking with some friends on the local repeater. I was not able to talk with anybody. The RF TX was good and I was hitting all repeater I normally open with low power, the long 3 band antenna is quite long but has a excellent performance. To my surprise and 3rd big disappointment, the internal mic, just quit. NO TX AUDIO, just RF. Not a good impression for my 3 grandsons. Ham radio demonstration, or lets say frustration, I am just returning a BETCH radio for the third time in the last 5 days. I love this nice radio, but you get what you paid for, I have been in Ham radio for 46 years and majored in Electronic Engineering. I never experienced a sequence of failures like that. There is a great possibility that all failures are related to the poor quality of the PTT/MIC jack. If you don't use the programing cable or the external mic, or just let the radio on display without using it. IT IS JUST NOT RELIABLE. I really want to return all BETCH products I ordered. P.S. I forgot to mentioned the charger on the first radio also stopped charging the battery and I bought another one. Shame on me! - N4IS JC
