Description

From New York Times best-selling author Judith Dupréomes a revised and updated edition of Bridges, her magnificent chronological tour of the world's most significant and eye-popping spans. Covering thousands of years of architectural history, each bridge is gorgeously photographed "elevating the landmarks from mode of transportation to works of art" (Bustle). Technological advances, structural daring, and artistic vision have propelled the evolution of bridge design around the world. This visual history of the world's landmark bridges has been thoroughly revised andupdated since its initial publication twenty-five years ago, and now showcases well-known classics as well as modern innovators. Bridges featured include: The Brooklyn Bridge (New York)Dany and- Kunshan Grand Bridge (China)Gateshead Millennium Bridge (England)The Golden Gate Bridge (San Francisco)Zakim Bridge (Boston) Including all-new photographs and the latest cutting edgework from today's international superstars of architecture and engineering, Bridges covers two-thousand years of technological and aesthetic triumphs, making it the most thorough, authoritative, and gorgeous book on the subject-as dramatic in presentation as the structures it celebrates. Breathtaking photographs capture the bridges' details as well as their monumental scale; architectural drawings and plans invite you behind the scenes as new bridges take shape; and lively commentary on each structure explores its importance and places it in historical context. Throughout, informative profiles, features, and statistics make Bridges an invaluable reference as well as a visual feast. Read more

  • Gorgeous & Expansive Book on Bridges
Tells a story seldom told, of the spans between the places we go. A gorgeous, and expansive book, which is in itself is an achievement on the topic.

  • Wow just Wow
Wow just wow. My 7 year old autistic son is obsessed with bridges. We talk about bridges from morning to night. He has even learned how to drive all over state on Google street view just to see the various bridges. I had been looking for a decent bridge book to gift him. The kid books just.didn't cut it. He is at school now and I cannot sit still waiting to give him this book. I am sure this will become his companion for years. Thank you so much Judith Dupre for creating such a beautifully eye appeasing collection. I am one happy momma. ... show more

  • Words to Ship By
Book is great. Condition in which is was shipped was not! No bubble wrapping, and why that matters is, if you're going to ship it along with six 3.5lbs bags of cat litter, the book should be secured better. Slightly damaged on the ends, but not bad enough to return.

  • Bridges are magnificent things - and for those that enjoy engineering excellence as having a beauty of its own
This book has encouraged me to do a 'bridge tour' - of at least the US and Canada - more if I can get there! Bridges are magnificent things - and for those that enjoy engineering excellence as having a beauty of its own, this history is a treasure. Engineers are not generally thought of as aesthetically oriented, but some have become comfortable enough with their engineering knowledge that we obtain the benefit of getting to our destination sooner and enjoying the beauty of a bridge along the way. ... show more
