Description

A Borla "Axle Back" or rear section exhaust implies the exhaust system is located behind the vehicle rear axle . Most installations are completed in less than an hour and require no cutting of the factory system. A Borla Axle Back performance exhaust is a less restrictive aftermarket exhaust system that will improve the sound level both inside the cabin and exterior. Borla Axle Back exhaust systems use engine-specific (not universal) mufflers that are designed, tested, and optimized specifically for a particular year/make/model vehicle.

  • Perfect subtle solution!
I've had my fair share of loud exhausts in the past, and the older I get, the more I appreciate a nice tone without the overbearing sound. This exhaust does precisely just that. The Crosstrek is by far one of the most underpowered Subaru's I've owned (out of 10 turbo'd and N/A's), so if you're wanting to bolt a fart cannon to amplify your redlining RPM's onto the naturally aspirated 2.0L it would be nothing short of attention-seeking and this is definitely not the exhaust for you. This exhaust is a simple upgrade and gives you a nice subtle rumble and places the exhaust tip just within sight but away from the rear bumper for a slightly sportier look over stock. [Installation]: I have a 2015 XV Crosstrek with a Curt Class 1 hitch, and the piping just before the tip was in contact with the hitch. I had an extended exhaust hanger on hand and put it to use. This allowed me to use 2 large washers and a bolt to bolt together the two stock exhaust hangers to make a second extended exhaust hanger. This placed the exhaust tip approximately 1 extra inch lower, and gave adequate clearance from the trailer hitch. If you have a hitch, do yourself a favor and purchase an extended exhaust hanger when you buy this. Metal on metal contact + vibration means something's going to rattle and wear. If you do not have a hitch, this should be a simple, 10 minute install. I suggest using silicone spray or a little grease on all the ends of the exhaust hanger rods so that the rubber hangers slide off easily. Exhaust gaskets that fit this pipe are cheap & easy to find. You can even make your own if you have the material. I used an old metal header-exhaust gasket from a past Subaru and cut it to size. Fits perfect. [Sound]: Idle has a slight rumble over stock. Low RPM is audible and low-toned, high RPM is very audible and retains the signature Subaru rumble. Highway drone is not an issue. Wind & tire noise exceed what is heard inside the vehicle. Cruising speeds have about the same effect. No backfires, no resonance, no tin-can rasp effect. [Performance]: Let's face it; you didn't buy a Crosstrek to race it. If there are any gains to be had, it would require this exhaust along with many other upgrades to notice it. The fact that you can now hear your engine, and it has a nice rumble will definitely give you that "I just got an extra 20+ horsepower" feel. [Appearance]: Nice, clean, subtle look. Not an over-sized tip, visible but not sticking out like a sore thumb or hanging too low. All stainless construction makes this exhaust outlast everything it's bolted to. Easy to keep clean. Final thoughts: If you can change a spark plug or air filter, you can bolt on this exhaust. Many stock-exhaust performance cars are about this loud, so you won't be upsetting the neighbors with this setup. I personally like that I can now judge my shifts, whereas before the upgrade, I could barely even hear where the engine was in terms of RPM. ... show more

  • Awesome Sound!!!(2015 IMPREZA SPORT 5M)
Installation: The installation of the muffler was fairly easy. It was able to be done in my garage with just jacking one side of the car up. The hardest part was getting the bolts off. If you live in an area where they heavily salt the roads it'll be a pain to get the factory bolts off. Another downside is that the muffler doesn't come with hardware, so the factory hardware is meant to be reused. This was not an option because of the amount of rust on the nuts and bolts. Thankful I had some grade 8 bolts with lock nuts in the garage to use. I believe these were either 3/8th or 7/16th while the factory ones are 9mm. After the hardware was figured out everything went in easily. Interior Sound: The sound inside the car is nice and clear and sounds very nice. It has a lower tone than stock with a nice rumble. Most noticeable at lower RPM. It's not something that's going to scream when you're flooring it, but driving around town sounds great. It doesn't drone much at all. Very nice subtle noise overall, it doesn't take over all other noise in the car. You can still listen to the radio comfortable, and the exhaust noise is pretty much nothing at highway speeds. With the manual there's a nice whistle right around redline that sounds very nice when you're really going for it. The noise is more noticeable in the backseat of the car, and it does get in the way a little when you have a car full of people talking. Under normal circumstances it's really nice and sounds great. Overall: Its a great muffler, sounds great, build quality is great, and comes with a nice warranty. Worth the price and adds a nice aggressiveness to a normal car. Love it and my car!!!!! ... show more

  • Borla 11843
Love the actual product but I bought it "used like new" well it turns out I think whoever bought it previously returned it due to the fact that the flange was not welded all the way around. Luckily that was a quick fix for me but I could definitely see why somebody would have returned it

  • Fit was perfect, and sounds great. Not to loud, but has a good tone.
Fits perfectly like stock. The only problem i had was the stock flange was rusty from northern Wisconsin winters, so i ended up having to cut both the old flange and the new flange off, and putting a coupling with clamps in place, not ideal, but it did work. Also, the new muffler doesn't come with the flange bolts. The stock bolts were so rusty, that i couldn't re-use them, so if you are doing this yourself, check the stock bolts before starting the project. If it wasn't for the flange situation, this would have taken less than 30 minutes to complete. This muffler sounds good when on the gas, and is nice and quiet when cruising down the highway, no drone or irritating noise as Borla states. ... show more

  • Makes Me Grin!
I LOVE the sound this thing makes on my car. I can't say that it has made too much difference in performance but it makes me smile all the time to sit back and listen to the car go. It's not super loud...just loud enough. It does not drone on the highway. I know in my head that I am probably not quicker than before, but listening to the sound sure makes me feel like I am. I highly recommend the upgrade. Installation was pretty easy. I am not a mechanic (though I am slightly mechanically inclined) and it took me about 45 minutes from start to finish. I needed a quick You Tube reference on the best way to get the old exhaust out of the rubber hangers (WD40 and need nose pliers). If you are considering this as a fun upgrade to your Crosstrek/Impreza, don't hesitate, it's worth the smiles that it brings. ... show more
