My lifelong allergies are through the roof. For years I’ve used Filtrete 1900, and have always been annoyed that I need to buy 2 at a time because they don’t make a 20”x40” filter. At $20 each, this gets pricey. I thought buying these MERV 13 would save money. The cost, saved initial money, but my HVAC system had to work twice as hard, causing my electric bill to double. Yes, less particles pass through the filter, but also less air passed through the filters. Side by side the MERV 13 had half the filter surface area, than the Filtrete 1900. (More folds-see photo. Filtrete1900 left, MERV 13 right). Over the course of a month, the MERV13 reduced suction was causing the metal vent return to buckle and audibly pop each time the system turn on or off. This reduced airflow forced the internal fans to work harder, increasing my electric bill. I tested this assumption by switching out the filters for a week at a time. I kept internal temp and humidity constant and external temps varied by less than six degrees over the 60 day period. They may work well for others, they just don’t work for me. ... show more

Indoor air quality is HUGE for me - living in Phoenix means DUST so windows are never opened in summer and having companion parrots require a cleaner indoor environment. The higher MERV rating really has a positive impact on the overall air quality by trapping finer dust, cooking smoke/odors, etc. I change my air filters monthly because these filters trap more impurities which impact airflow in short order causing my a/c unit to work harder. Research MERV rating info before buying especially if you have an older HVAC system. Great and reasonably priced. Supposed to change every three months. Make sure to verify width in this case 1" and orient the filter with arrow to ensure you have it facing the correct direction. The arrow points away from furnace into ducts.

    • Snug fit and good filtration since installed

Filter installed into our enclosure with snug fit. There was no bending of filter and the air immediately pulled the filter next to frame. There is no filter noise other than moving of air close to the frame. Trapped particles can be observed on the filter so it is performing as it should.

    • Be careful using MERV 13
We bought these. No specific issue with the product. But we started having icing problems with our AC. I did a little research and found that some HVAC systems can struggle with higher MERV filters because they're naturally more restrictive. We'll be switching back to MERV 8 and see if that improves our problem. ... show more
