This isn't my first time using carbon filters. I'm beyond disappointed with these poor quality "filters". Immediately when I opened the plastic bag they came in I noticed it was discolored with carbon dust which had shed everywhere. I've included a photo which shows just how much dust had shed inside the bag prior to opening it. I took one out and cut it and there was a thick line of carbon dust (not unexpected, but the amount was surprising). You can set these down on any light-colored surface and they leave visible carbon dust on that surface. I ended up having to vacuum one pad for a good 10 minutes to get most of the dust out of it, yet still it sheds. What's the point of a filter that creates dust? ... show more

Three 12x16 pieces of filter media were twice-folded within the plastic-bag. Upon unfolding, distinct creases were evident in the media. Although this won't impact efficiency, it did make it a little more difficult to lay it flat on the inside of the return grate. Cutting the media to size (8x14) with standard scissors was easy; virtually no carbon was loosened in the process. I was unable to locate a proper filter media frame, so I criss-crossed a length of modeling wire across the back, using the grate's centering brackets to secure the wire. That was sufficient to hold the media in place. Since I used the material in a return-air situation, I don't know how effective it will be filtering odors, but I suspect it should work well for dust. Black color is a sharp change from the white background seen through the grate before, but it does provide a nice contrast to the new antique bronze decorative grate. ... show more

I liked the idea of apparent activated carbon in the filter material. Cutting and installing the filters was no problem. They are in place and I assume adding an additional filter to the one in the air flow system.

I liked the idea of it, but after putting 4 into the floor vent that had the mouse pee somewhere in the tube. I’m going to add a couple more to see if that works.
