Description

2016 release. Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade, Handsome Furs, Divine Fits) has announced the debut album for his band Operators, titled Blue Wave. Formed in 2013, the band features Boeckner on vocals, guitar, and synths and is joined by New Bomb Turks and Divine Fits drummer, Sam Brown, and electro-wiz, Devojka. Produced by Graham Walsh (METZ, Alvvays, Viet Cong), much of Blue Wave was recorded in a middle of nowhere 1850s-vintage barn in southern Ontario. Blue Wave follows the release of EP1, an upbeat, aggressively melodic collection of synth-driven pop songs which gave us a taste of what was to come with the band. After a length of time on the road with the likes of Future Islands, New Pornographers and more, the band's sound evolved from an analog post-punk project to a more live, punked-out sound, with Boeckner finding himself often strapped back into his guitar. The first single, 'Cold Light', demonstrates the beautiful melding of both worlds.

  • Northern Sonic Sage
Solid album from one of the most consistent rockers of the decade. Modern and familiar at the same time. A blend of retro electronica and post punk with make you think, wonder, then google what's Dan Boeckner singing about lyrics. Please, check out this album. You'll be doing yourself and great music a favor. If you like this album, his older band Handsome Furs might be better. The albums Sound Kapital & Face Control are everything that I'm personally looking for in music; energy, a voice, a sound, urgency, and passion. ... show more

  • It's five-star excellent - no hyperbole!
Yes, It’s Five-Star Excellent! No Hyperbole… I saw this band performing on Radio KEXP 90.3 FM – for those unfamiliar with this station – it features a great many cool and what I’d label avant garde artists – e.g., All Them Witches is a band regularly featured on the station’s taped concerts. NB: Admittedly, some of the bands featured by this station blow big time, especially those with singers attempting to mimic or outright rip-off Bjork! Now, the review: The Operators is one of the best bands I’ve seen performing on KEXP and I immediately ordered their CD “Blue Wave” – no inserts, no lyrics, just a CD in a folding case – oh, and most importantly, KICK ASS music! I’m an old man with glaucoma, I can’t read inserts with liner notes anyway – it’s the music I need and want! I hate writing detailed reviews that contain track-by-track descriptions of the songs, of which “Blue Wave” includes 10. Here’s what I’ll say, prior to providing a description of the music – Use the Google machine to find: “Operators on KEXP” and watch the performance – my bet is, after watching and listening, much like me, you’ll want to purchase the CD, and you might even agree with what follows: 1. It’s what I’ll label - with a caveat – “techno-pop.” The caveat is that there’s a brooding dissonance haunting the tunes – they are not upbeat or “happy” – there are, however, up-tempo… 2. The band incorporates throbbing drumbeats, and are heavy on the keyboards with some nice guitar lines for accents. To provide some insight into The Operators’ sound – and this will reveal some of the music I have listened to in the past – imagine an evil, malevolent (dark and brooding) melting of Wang Chung and the Cure (e.g., The Cure Mixed Up), and include the ambiance of the type of bands you’ll find on WaxTrax! Records: The First 13 Years – Black Box. 3. Every track is strong – it’s all solid material and there’s no filler – all dripping red meat! One comment on an individual track is #1 – “Rome”: it has a slightly different feel then the rest of the tracks – my guess, it was probably recorded earlier than the other tracks, left over from another release and then included on this CD. No matter – it kicks ass. 4. I did no research on the band – not one for learning the history of the musicians I listen to – but I’ll bet they’re from Canada (based on their record company). The singer does adopt a slight British accent, which, while undoubtedly faux and manufactured, is cool. I have not listened to any of their other releases save for “Blue Wave,” and, as stated, I love it! To conclude, and to reiterate what was stated above, check them out on the KEXP show, and this review will probably be rendered null and void. Last point - and it's crucial: If Hollywood ever remakes the Friedkin film, To Live and Die in LA – The Operators must score it in place of the original Wang Chung. When track #2 (“Control”) plays, I imagine a young William Pedersen base-jumping from a bridge! ... show more

  • Absolutely amazing. Between the analog synths and the breathtaking drumming
Absolutely amazing. Between the analog synths and the breathtaking drumming, it will throw you back into the 1980s as if you are in a John Hughes film. There are no bad songs and there is some real depth to the way this is produced - very rocking and tons of tiny nuggets - so give it multiple listens. Faves are Rome, Control, Mission Creep, Blue Wave, Bring Me the Head, Shape of Things and Nobody. ... show more
