  • Amazingly powerful for such a tiny package
Style: Mini Pro
If you're new to streaming, you have heard of the Black Magic ATEM Mini Pro and the Livepro L1. I bought both to test out. The Livepro is 1/2 the price of the ATEM Mini Pro, but similar in price to the Atem mini. I only have the Mini pro so I can't speak for the Atem mini. First, both the ATEM and the Livepro does basically the same thing. Both are very well built and have a nice heft to it. Both have 4 HDM inputs. The ATEM has 2 mic inputs, the Livepro has one. The Livepro has headphone for monitoring, while the ATEM has none. Both do basic transitions such as swipes and fades. Both do Picture in Picture. The Livepro has a tiny LCD screen that shows what's on each of the 4 inputs so you don't have to have an external monitor. The Livepro also has a 1/4 threaded mount on the right side should you want to mount it somewhere. Both can be hooked up to a computer via USB or network. Difference is the Livepro L1 software is terrible. It really just replicates the controls without really adding any functionality. You do better without the software. The firmware upgrade process is complicated. The Atem software on the other hand completely expands the capability of the hardware. Much more function and flexibility. So for basic camera switching for zoom meetings and such, the Livepro is an excellent value. It's super simple to use, has most functions that most users would want in a solid package. So simple you don't even need to read the manual. And you certainly don't get anything else with the software. What you get with the ATEM is much more flexibility with the software control. You have a full audio mixer. Much more sophisticated audio/video interface when paired with a computer. You can do titles, keying, audio sync, etc. Much more to learn, but much more powerful. You really are buying into the BlackMagic biosphere. I really enjoy learning all the functions in the software, everything is pretty intuitive. But then again I'm a bit of a geek. So for someone like me I like the ATEM much better and it's worth double the price. It's flexible and immensely powerful for such a tiny box. I actually use both devices. I have the HDMI out on the Livepro as my 4th input on the ATEM. So when I want something super simple, I just use the Livepro via the ATEM. When I want to get fancy, I can tap the functions of the ATEM. One thing in common on both is that neither have an on/off switch...weird. ... show more

  • Most important things about the ATEM Mini Pro
Style: Mini Pro
as you can see by the picture I included I included with my review, I am a bit of a neophyte in the videographer/streamer arena, but I have done my homework. I can only review it from the point of view of someone who is learning real time. In all of my research the AETM mini pro was raved about. It is the bottom end of switches but is very for the nonprofessional to use. So these were the things that have either troubled me or I found out was great. First, is how is how do you set up multi cam PTZ recording or streaming rig. turns out there are many ways. I have an IT background and what was most important to me was the ability to have to only use cat 6 Ethernet cable. the Avkans cameras that I have support a wide array of protocols, and Ethernet is what I know best. As turns out I can have complete control over the cameras and and get video/audio using only IP cable. The decision that you need to make using that of cabling is what protocol are you going to use. You have a choice of RTSP, RTMP, or NDI. RTPS and RTMP are fairly simple protocols to work with on an Ethernet Lan. I chose RTSP, only to find out that this switcher works, at least as far as I know for streaming, the RTMP protocol. which means until I find a workaround I have to run both Ethernet and HDMI to each camera. OK, I can live with that for now. I'm going to try and see that if I switch to the RTMP Protocol I can have the switcher recognized as an IP address. That may not be possible. I have confirmed that the switcher must have power, And even though my cameras are POE, the switcher is not. Again not a negative just a fact. So, having everything set up using both Ethernet and HDMI cable the console is idiot proof. However, there is supposed to be mythical software that you can download run an Ethernet cable from the from the switcher to your computer that emulates the switcher and has many extra functionalities. I just hope you can find it, because nobody else can find it.. Their download site for software, firmware, manuals is one of the worst arrangements i've ever seen, except for devices that never had downloads. so, I am at the point where I can effectively run my 3 nice PTZ cameras and input audio to stream or record, or both. I purchased this setup which is mostly used in churches for outdoor music festivals that we put on several times a year.. All in all I've spent $3200 approximately to have this ability at 1080P. had I bought any other vendor products it would have cost me, at best,$6000 to $8000. So I am so I am extremely happy and will be ecstatic once I can find the software. Good luck in your hunt and post it if you find it ... show more

  • Good basic video switcher
Style: Mini Pro ISO
Used this in our church livestream setup. Once I got everything set up, it seems to work well. My regrets: It lacks a headphone jack and second HDMI output. We have outgrown the device in less that three months. With all that I am still really amazed at the capabilities of this unit, and I am already looking to upgrade to the Extreme model, just wish I had gone directly to the 8-port unit the first time. ... show more
