  • This is one awesome phone. TCL hit a home run with this one.
I have been a BlackBerry user for over 10 years (I supported them at work) and was upgrading from the BlackBerry Classic. I needed a phone that could support apps that are available today and the BB10 browser just didn't cut it. I did have some issues getting the phone set up. When I received the phone it was well packed but I was surprised to find an international power adapter in the package. I opened the factory sealed box and used my existing BlackBerry charger to charge the phone. (I didn't realize that the included charger - in international version - had a pull out "earth" pin. Once I sorted that out the included charger works well). Much surprise came when the screen displayed everything in Chinese!!! I poked around the various screens hoping to find the screen that would let me change to language. No luck. I did find information on line but all of the videos were presented on phones that were already set for English. The seller was not much help getting me set up. They told me that "other people received these phones and had no problem figuring it out". After several emails I was provided a link to a YouTube video (that I had already seen). They said to just touch the places on the screen and I should be able to get to the right screen. I did eventually get to the right screen and set the phone for U.S. English. I then did a Factory Reset and when the phone booted I was presented with a screen that allowed me to select the language. I expected that this screen would be what I first saw on initial power up. Apparently the Chinese load some of their apps on the phone and that is why the language is set to Chinese. The Factory Reset get rid of all of that stuff - whatever it was. I inserted the SIM card and my SD card in the phone and I was up and running. It took a few days to get all of my contacts and calendar updated and other options configured. BlackBerry has a nice app for Content Transfer built into the Key 2 and all I needed to do was download the Content Transfer app onto the Classic and in no time all of my information was transferred, I wanted to use different ringtones than what were provided and in order to do so I needed to download a file manager. (Found that out from reading the User Guide). Did that and all as well. The access to my music library on the SD card is not as easy to access as it was on the Classic but I have it figured out. Also, this phone has a built-in FM radio which works very well. I'll save the best for last. The phone is FAST!!! The browser loads very fast and displays all of the content I need to see. The design of the phone is beautiful. Everyone who has seen it remarks on the great styling and they LOVE the fact that it has a real keyboard. Battery life is great and I charge it about every two or three days. It may take some time to get used to the Android operating system but once you do you will like it. The learning curve is not that steep. ... show more

  • Great phone as long as it fits your needs.
Here is my six day review for my Black BlackBerry Key2. There is no doubt this phone has a specific audience, but if you are part of that audience as far as I am concerned this is an excellent phone! Reasons I like this phone: An excellent physical keyboard. I did not own a BlackBerry Keyone so I can't compare, but this one is bigger, it looks great on my Black version, and it is super clicky. Far better than on my previous BlackBerry, the Priv. I also really like the ability to see my whole phone screen while I scroll websites and many apps with the keyboard working like a mouse wheel. Efficient Speed. My Priv was very slow, but this phone was built to handle android much better than the old phones, with 6 gigs of ram and a snapdragon 660 processor. One of the knocks on the Keyone was the lag, though I can't imagine it was anywhere near as slow as the Priv. Perhaps my biggest reason for liking the phone is the apps. Not only is this a fully functioning Android phone running Android Oreo at launch but it has a suite of great blackberry apps. I haven't had any problems running Android apps, though I don't do too much intensive gaming, Nintendo apps are working fine. The productivity and security of the BlackBerry apps work great for me. I always leave the Hub open and I use it to run my everyday office life. Email, calendar, todo lists I send to my BlackBerry Hub, and I am good to go. I feel safer too running security features on the phone such as dtek, locker, the fingerprint sensor on the keyboard that works very well for me, and Firefox focus when I am dealing with sensitive information. On top of those reasons the phone just works great for me. Using my phone at the office as a tool, this feels like the way to go, though it still runs media very well. Reasons to get it: Keyboard, Blackberry on Android, productivity apps, security, great battery life, great all around phone. Reasons not to get it: Nice screen but awkward video aspect ratio making video smaller than phones with similar screen size, processor works for games, but not cutting edge stuff, if you don't want a physical keyboard it is always gonna be there and there is another BlackBerry for that. 650 is too much for some. No US carrier sells this, and it won't work at all for Verizon or Sprint right now, or maybe ever. Get all the info to make an informed decision as this is definitely a unique product. I researched it out and do not regret my purchase one bit. ... show more

  • Great phone for productivity and fast-paced lives with a stunning design
At first I was hesitant to buy this phone outright, so early when it has just been released and with such a high price, but I decided I wanted a high-end phone that would definitely last me 2-4 years and this seemed like the phone to do it (my previous method of waiting for a phone to be year old then buying, usually resulted in the phone lasting me 1.5+ to 2+ years). Plus I needed to replace my old Priv, as it had become too laggy and slow, the battery decreased too quickly, etc. After a full week of use, I can say that I am fully happy with this phone. The BlackBerry Key2 is a phenomenal on-the-go productivity and communications device. (I'm actually typing this review on the Key2 right now during a train ride.) The three main reasons I wanted this phone were: 1.) The Battery Life, 2.) Faster Interface, and 3.) The Physical Keyboard. The Key2 has exceeded my expectations for all three. The battery life is amazing! On a regular day, a full charge lasts a day and a quarter, with me not needing to charge it until late morning of the next day. And my usage on a regular day involves sending emails, heavy texting, calling people, using Google Maps, using ride-sharing apps like Uber/Lyft, social media (Facebook and Instagram), checking my banking apps, and web browsing. Whereas my previous Priv's power would go down 20%-35% during a 5-10 minute Uber ride, the Key2 barely goes down 3%. When going to a meeting, event, or visiting a friend, my phone no longer quickly dies on me. This excellent battery life, also goes in hand with the smooth interface. You can't really use multiple apps and switch between tasks, if it will massively drain your battery. I no longer worry about the battery when using multiple apps, and switching between tasks has been fast and zippy. Despite this phone not having the latest and most expensive Snapdragon processing chip, all of the apps I use run fast and smooth. Maybe it's the extra RAM, or maybe TCL/BlackBerry did optimize the software, or both. Regardless, this is the fastest and most efficient phone that I have used. And, of course, the physical keyboard is amazing and I won't go into too much detail with that (as many others already have). The bigger sized buttons have really made for a smoother typing experience, and the keyboard (and SpeedKey) allows me to switch between apps and multi-task even faster, as I've programmed them as short-cut keys to suit my needs (which is something that all-touchscreen phones can't do). Although the keyboard is great, I'm still not completely satisfied as I'm a fan of the slider form-factor. For me the best phone would be a slider that has excellent battery life and runs smoothly. (So, I'm hoping for their next release cycle TCL releases two flagships: one slider and one non-slider, but both with physical keyboards. Instead of releasing one high-end phone and one lower-end phone as they currently do.) Those three aspects were just the most important to me and what differentiates the phone from other phones on the market. The regular qualities of a phone (call quality/reception, sound, durability, design, display, etc.) are all top-notch, as well. It's also pretty light, so I don't feel like I'm carrying extra weight in my pocket. For the design though, I wished they extended the rubberized back to the sides of the phone so that it would be even easier to hold and grip. But it is a stunning phone to look at and I find myself randomly staring at it every now and then. At work and on the train, many people give it quite a stare haha (although, with only a week of use, no one has actually asked me about it...Maybe if I had bought the flashy silver version, instead of the black, people would be more likely to ask about it haha.) But I love the classy, understated and subtle look of the black version. Just based on looks-wise and the design, it looks like a high-end phone. So, why don't I give it 5-stars? As I already mentioned, the high price point, the non-sliding form (which takes away screen space for videos), it's not available at any retail stores to look at first or buy on installment (leaving customers with only one option: buy online at full price without ever seeing it in person), and the cameras (both back and front) aren't the best. There are other downsides to the phone too, such as not being waterproof and the keyboard's trackpad feature is problematic (working fine on some apps and not working at all in other apps). But those short-comings are not enough to stop me from using this exceptional phone. If software updates allow for taking better quality pictures and the phone is able to last me 3-4 years, I would bump it to 5-stars. But as it currently stands, it's not perfect but the Key2 is a great overall phone for anyone, especially for productivity and for fast-paced lives that are constantly on-the-go. ... show more

  • It's a Blackberry -- ?
I cannot fathom using a phone that is not a Blackberry. After my Classic just wore out, I had to look at this model. As far as the build of the Key2 phone, -- it is solid and responsive. The fingerprint reader works well and the interface is easy enough to change to your liking. It is a bit longer than I would normally want - but with a good case it is easy to hold and operate. This case is perfect btw, --- https://www.amazon.com/StilGut-BlackBerry-Case-Genuine-Leather/dp/B07JGZ2DBF/ref=sr_1_26?crid=1L9CQ87B63YM2&keywords=blackberry+key2+case&qid=1557674847&s=gateway&sprefix=Blackberry%2Caps%2C217&sr=8-26 I'm not happy with the Android platform that it is on. Although strongly protected by many of the abilities of a Blackberry. It is simply not as smooth and sophisticated as a true Blackberry device. I realize that Android plays to a whole 'nuther mind set about smart phones. (think of the difference between Windows 7 and Windows 10 -- playing to a completely different consumer) There are too many apps that are silly and unnecessary for what I consider to be the typical Blackberry user's needs. Also, quite importantly, - As it is on a Android/Google OS -- Google now has it's tenticals in everything you do on the phone. Google takes control over your photos, your calendar and contacts. You can change some of these permissions, but not all. As a result, what used to be so seamless on a Blackberry, is now clunky, as far as I'm concerned. I will continue to use it -- as, frankly I have no choice if I want to keep some kind of Blackberry, . . . but I find it disappointing as to the dumbed down OS. As a smart phone device, it is well built and does have a amazing battery life. The sound quality for calls is very good and the speaker is adequate for listening to audio or video. It does have a headset jack port. It is meant to be more of phone for enterprise level use with Blackberry security rather than just a consumer device for entertainment. But it does play Audio and Video quite well. The Screen can be very bright (if that is your choosing) and it is very responsive. The keyboard is great. All in all - if you are a true Crackberry fan, you will find this is model is better to try than to have to switch completely over to an stand alone Android or iOS phone. IMHO ... show more

  • The Blackberry Key2 is the best phone i have ever used
I am a blackberry user. I have never switched to android or iPhone, despite the fact that I have witnessed most people make the leap. I like the way the blackberries look and feel, and I like the keyboard. My basic needs are cell, email and texts, with video needs, as I work in a marketing capacity. But, lately, watched many apps not work well, over the past several years, like from my move to the Priv, then the Key one, which in my opinion was prone to a lot of problems. And I was very happy to see that blackberry released the new Key2. Honestly, if this new key2, did not perform well, I was going to make the switch like everyone else. But, voila! This is the best phone in the world and I am so pleased with it! From the time I received my new blackberry Key2, I first noticed the quality was impeccable. Then, I was amazed at just how easy and intuitive the phone was to use. Content Transfer was a breeze, and the phone has amazing battery life. Coming from the Key one, I upgraded due to some issues I was having with my settings not staying put, and battery life was not ideal. But, the Key2 easily runs for 2 days without needing a recharge, provided I use it only for email etc. Videos will use more battery life. But, I am extremely happy with the Key2 and its ease of use, workmanship. Everything simply works very well, and I really could not be happier with the key2. I now feel that I TRULY have a phone that is everything I like from blackberry, but finally also together with all the latest app features, that every other smart phone out there has, and now with extra security that is unique to Blackberry. I would highly recommend the key2 to anyone. Very happy with it. ... show more

  • "space bar" malfunction in 2 months, then repair process is frustrating
For over 15 years, have always purchased blackberries. Prior to the Key2, i had a BB Passport and a Priv too. The Key2 is made by and supported by TCL Communications (AKA Blackberry Mobile). This review is in relation to the terrible experience i had with the TCL Comm. (BBMo) who manufactures/supports Key2. I regret my Key2 purchase and i further regret having listened and trusted customer care (TCL/BBMo) to pursue their warranty process. In only 2 months, "space bar" stopped working. Since the device is still under warranty, i contacted their support and got processed for an advance replacement, but refurbished Key2 (only possible with a $600 hold on my credit card). They assured me that it would ship in 2-3 days and i could just transfer my files over and send the defective device back. Well, it didn't ship as they said, and it realized major delay in shipping it to me. Because i had international travel upcoming, i kept calling and asking for the status and they kept assuring me that it would be delivered before i leave. That never happened. They finally shipped it after i left the country... Then, i had to scramble from overseas to reject the package by phone calls to FEDEX, because BBMo told me that they couldn't do anything and they didn't have any control over the package. Upon returning home, i tried to reopen the case/replacement and was given all kinds of excuses and delays for a week. As i'm waiting for the case to be reopened, i dropped the phone from a chair onto wood floors and screen cracked. Now, i finally managed to get a repair ticket open and sent the phone back for both issues (defective space bar and cracked screen). It has been 30 days, and i have been calling daily for the last 2 weeks and they keep telling me " no status updates, please wait". I'm further frustrated that they won't provide a repair estimate on the cracked screen (almost any other brand has fixed prices for screen repairs). Then, there is the 30+ day wait/no-information period just to get an estimate (which i still don't have). If you're serious about buying one of these, I recommend you check Crackberry Forums for similar situations in dealing with simple repairs with the TCL phones. In summary, the phone quality is poor, customer service is terrible. There is only one repair facility, and they take unreasonably long times. I'm never purchasing any of their phones again or any other TCL branded product. ... show more

  • 2nd update.
OK so this may be premature but given the fact I've only used BlackBerry as my smartphone choice exclusively, I feel qualified to give my perspective as a consumer. First of all the phone is beautiful. The keyboard is like old school vintage quality. I'm someone who never owned a full android until the keyone...and we'll it wasn't the greatest experience. Especially if you owned a passport like me. I read a review that compared the key 2 quality to that of the passport and I must a agre . His phone is even the passport was and so much more. The p one was great speed, probably smoother than my passport which was pretty fast. I'll return to my phone with more as I continue to use the device. As far as the price. I don't know how to put that in perspective. The fact of the matter quality smart phones seem to be starting around 500. So I don't get all the haggle about the price. I new iphone 8 wich my daughter wants , which by the way is two generations old apparently, is selling for over 800. Bucks. The new gals Samsung are close to 1000. So 649 dose not sound that crazy. I'm not techy kinda of person and I must admit I'm in a better place with my funds these days, but I really don't get why the price is such an issue wth the device. I must admit after my Keyone experience I actually considered going a different direction than blackberry but I decided to give Key2 a try after much research... early impressions "I'm glad I did" I am hope this helps 1st update I'm like wow it's amazing..the touchscreen seems to be more responsive... there is actually no lag whatsoever One draw back..everyone raves. About the battery life..-idk it's not horrible but for any one who's. Owned a blackberry before I found it a little short of expections ..but because of how powerful and smooth the phone runs it's not surprising.. By no means is it a wall hugger. Like an iphone.. BTW speakers sound is rather descent like pleastly surprised given that was a con for most. The camera well I'm not a. Photographer but I think its really good 2nd update I found out that I had apps constantly trying to download and that's what's hampered my battery life..sine I resolved that issue I'm experiencing that quality battery life every one is raving about You can usually tell without a few days of usage where you stand with a phone...my experience has been awesome I truly feel like this device renewed my love for BlackBerry... I think I'm going to own this one for years to come... ... show more

  • I am in love! The Key2 finally lets me forget about my much-loved Classic.
I've been a BlackBerry fan for years, largely due to the physical keyboard and the integrated HUB for all incoming messages, calls and alerts. The phone is focused on generating content and managing messages rather than simply accessing entertainment. I loved the BB10 operating system--especially the Classic--and was sad to see it destined for the scrap heap. But BB10 didn't do apps, which made it a dinosaur. Last year I bought a KeyOne for work. It provided a gateway to Android apps while maintaining lots of what I loved about BlackBerry. Moving from BB10 to Android was a bit challenging, but didn't take too long to master. The KeyOne, however, is a bit clunky and has become very slow in just a year. The memory seems to be constantly taxed and the system bogs down at inopportune times. At best the KeyOne was a bridge to a functional keyboard Android phone in a world taken over by touch screens. After two weeks using the Key2 I am in love! It has exceeded my expectations in every way. It is lighter, faster and better looking than the KeyOne. The physical keyboard is a bit bigger, more responsive and a real joy to use. It is similar to the Classic keyboard, but possibly even better. The productivity tab is a great addition. With one swipe I can scan recent emails and view upcoming calendar events. This is improved functionality for me. The enhanced security features are also a plus, including Locker and Firefox Focus. The battery is very burly--it can go two days with lots of use on one charge--but seems to deplete slightly faster than the KeyOne. Some have complained that the screen is not bright enough, but I do not think this is an issue at all. All in all the Key2 is the best combination yet of BlackBerry functionality in the Android universe. I recommend it highly. ... show more
