this is the most pre presence tense shoes HOME studio stuff i have ever seen released all in one place as the other person who reviewed this first explains that the recordings are all kind of demo style becouse that was all the shoes could afford to record on 40 to 45 years ago long before they had a major label deal in 1979, i first heard the shoes in 1980 and i bought there then debut lp presence tense and then tounge twister after that and loved both records and was a fan right then and there!!!!! then years passed i was always listening to other kinds of music in the 80s like metal and punk as well as some new wave. at a record show i found a copy of BLACK VINYL SHOES wich was a private press but i think it was easier for me to dig it as i was already a fan, technically what you are getting here is 3 cd versions of demos for black vinyl as well as a couple of other records the shoes released private like the bazooka record and one in versailles wich pre dated black vinyl shoes, i always liked the shoes brand of melodic power pop i felt they where very similar to the rubinoos but of that power pop bunch i always liked the pezband best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! still short on a great sound here i give this 5 stars as i think it is great to have most of what the shoes recorded all in one nice clam shell box that comes with a really nice photo booklet of the band going as far back as the early 70s and into the late 70s, like stated before this set is for somebody who has been a shoes fan for decades like i have been, nice remastering done by cherry red as well................ ... show more

    • A 3 CD collection that's a must for fans!
If you've never heard of the Shoes, you will probably be disappointed with this collection. Most of the tracks on this 3 CD collection were recorded at home with primitive recording equipment back in the 70's. This collection is definitely meant for long time fans! I started listening to the Shoes back in the 80s when I bought their album "Tongue Twister" on a whim just because I thought the cover was interesting. I instantly fell in love with the catchy songs and smooth harmonies on that album. I soon purchased Boomerang and Present Tense and loved those as well. Then I was diving back into their catalog even more and eventually found a copy of Black Vinyl Shoes. I admit I didn't care for this album when I first listened to it. I didn't think the songs were bad but the production lacked the punch of their studio albums that I was used to. Well, of course, that's because they recorded the album in their living room with the equipment they had at the time. Over the years, the album has grown on me and I enjoy it from time to time. Now comes this boxed set that also includes songs from a couple of other albums they recorded at home and some rare and never released tracks. Being a long time fan, I'm really happy to have this collection. The packaging is great, the liner notes are great, the sound on the CD is great considering the source tapes. This is head over heals better than the previous similar collection "As Is" that also included the old albums "One In Versailles" and "Bazooka" along with some rare tracks. If you're a fan, you will love this collection. If you've never heard of Shoes and want to sample some of their work, stick with their "35 Years, The Definitive Shoes Collection" that was released in 2012 or any one of their great studio CD's. ... show more

I don't know about everyone else, but my copy of Black Vinyl Shoes is on a good old blue surface CDR! The label has opted for this cheap route with current releases of the disc, so just be warned if you intend to purchase...

    • One good song, the rest are forgettable
I bought this because I figured there must be more good songs, based on Tomorrow Night. I was wrong, the rest of the material is weak and not worth listening to more than once. I sold it on eBay. The set Cherry Records did on Bram Tchaikovsky is much better and has lots of great power pop.

Hats off to everyone who made this release possible. This triple disc set is the most comprehensive yet covering the band's early years. I love the sound quality...so what if everything is not super polished and perfect? When the songs are this cool, it just doesn't matter. Unlike another reviewer, my discs are REAL CDs (not CD-Rs). So nice to see that over time more and more folks are discovering one of the most overlooked and under-recognized pop bands of all time. The Shoes had/have a sound that is uniquely their own. And the music is completely addictive in the best kind of way. ... show more
