  • Classic On All Sides
Black On Both Sides is a wonderful piece of art. Dante Smith aka Mos Def has mastered the art of MCing and he's done his best on this LP right here. He sounds vicious on each and every track, with a flow that makes waterfalls look still and a voice that cuts through the speakers like a freshly constructed lightsaber yielded by Master Yoda while battling thousand clone-troopers. Most rappers put emphasis on the rhymes that end a line, but Mos is doing it on words that start it and he changes the melody of his voice often and good enough to make "entertaining" a pale adjective. He manages to sound like ten different ways all at the same time, and on top of that he's a very decent singer which makes your ear feel greatful like a homeless person getting the pink slip of a brand new Bentley. What's scarry is that the lyrics of the songs don't fall behind by a single percent. Dante has created catchy lines like "Ass so fat - that you could see it from the front" but what's great is that the song-writing goes hand in hand with the lyicallity and nothing has been sacrfised. Some of the songs are conceptual and really entertaining. "New World Water" is a whole track dedicated to that cool refreshing drink, while "Mr. Ni**a" gives a clear point of view regarding racisim, a world's ill that unfortunately is still around. The classic "Ms. Fat Booty" is a story about a girl that went lez on Mos, but the best example is "Mathematics", a Premo-produced beat over which Dante sorts out all sorts of calculations while showing you why this album is the epitome of conscious Hip-Hop. The instrumentals may not be that great in isolation but most of them sound amazing with Mos Def's vocals on top of them. "Ms. Fat Booty" has the replay value of a sex tape with Jessica Alba and Angelina Jolie doing it, "Hip-Hop" is what Hip-Hop is all about, "Mathematics" is captivating in its own way, and "Know That" creates an adrenaline rush. Songs like "Umi Says" and "Climb" are here to calm you down and if the world was to really end today, I'd play the former to keep me happy as an alien shoots me from behind. I also have to mention "Speed Law" which is my favorite Mos Def song, period. Black On Both Sides is a classic, even my Mom knows that (she really does), but not many people mention this masterpiece when "What are some of the greatest Hip-Hop albums of all time?" is asked. Feel free to disagree, but I can easily see it in the Top 10 and in his best days, Mos Def was an MC that could go toe to toe with any living soul that raps. ... show more

  • Great Price For Hard to Find CD
Mos Def is such a versatile and talented person. I absolute love “UMI Says.” That song speaks to me.

  • Classic hip hip album
I bought this record and it's a classic hip hop album. Mos Def (now Yasiin Bey) is a virtuoso emcee and his lyrics are top tier. He actually talks about subjects in his songs unlike a lot of the "rap/trap/mumblerap" we are hearing today. Mos Def is in top form on this album, and this has to be the best one he ever released. I believe the beats were done my DJ Hi-Tek, but fact check that one. If it was Hi-Tek, he was in his usual glorious boom bap beats form. I would say any legit hip hop head, especially a fan of the golden era, should have this album in their collection. ... show more

  • Timeless classic, quality pressing
This one is is a must-own if you are into NYC hiphop from the 90's. Plenty of depth lyrically and musically, and still sounds as dope as when it was first released. The vinyl sounds fantastic unlike the super noisy repress of the Black Star album.
