My partner and I are DIYers. We rarely hire people to work on our house, and we've been thinking about making a backyard patio. I got this book so we can educate ourselves and have a guide to follow, but while reading this book, we realized this is a serious manual that could probably be used to learn patios professionally. This book is extremely detailed and people could probably hire US after we make our patio. This is an amazing book. The large full color pictures really give you a lot to work with when coming up with ideas. It has fairly basic instructions for how to build or set up different patios, so I would use that as a jumping point so you know what your getting into, but would probably go watch online videos for more detailed how-to instructions. In a world of internet, sometimes it's really nice to have a quality book to just thumb through. There is something tangible and real about it. ... show more

I got this for my husband because he has big dreams about what our backyard could become. This book is full of beautiful pictures to provide inspiration to get the ideas flowing for how you might want to create your own outdoor space. Some of the projects look fairly simple and achievable for someone with an average DIY ability and some are really more expert level. What we enjoyed was getting a better understanding of what types of materials are available to use and how you can use those materials to achieve different results. Also gives an idea of how involved different types of projects are so you can mentally budget for time and expense even if you don't plan to do the work yourself. If you do plan to take it on, the instructions felt clear and provided plenty of step by step guidance. Using this book in conjunction with some online videos definitely makes many of the projects seem approachable. This is a comprehensive book on building patios, with tons of bright full-color pictures and step-by-step instructions on various aspects of patio construction, including common issues and pitfalls and repairs. You could probably find a lot of these instructables-type guides with enough internet research, but this collects everything together into one place. Black & Decker's "The Complete Guide to Patios" is a beautifully illustrated book full of backyard patio projects for the DIYer (and particularly, those in the city or suburbs). What I enjoyed most was the first section, covering design considerations, material selection, and a gallery of inspirational photos. I’ve done a lot of landscaping and yet I still learned a few new things, although I wish it went into more detail about designing areas with particular goals in mind. For example, there's a small section on pathways and patio furniture, but the focus is all on how everything fits in regards to the measurements, rather than being about creating a space with the right movement and atmosphere. The space I’m creating will be for entertaining, so I especially wanted more insight for designing a space that flows well, with good crowd control, and didn’t really get that perspective from this book. I was also surprised that in mentioning different materials, it didn’t highlight stamped concrete, which has been one of my favorites to work with—and in my opinion, is way easier than tile and some of the other projects they do feature! That said, the majority of the book showcases a variety of how-to projects, and any of them could be easily mixed and matched with different materials and processes. The challenge is that nothing is ever as simple as books make it appear, and I think I would want a little more detail if I were planning to follow any of the projects step-by-step. I think this is a great resource to provide ideas and information, but will mix and match designs and construction techniques from a couple other books as well to best suit my needs for the space I’ve been planning. ... show more
