Description

Two souls dwell in the chest of many audio enthusiasts. On one hand they want the uncompromising sound of a reference headphone, such as beyerdynamic's T1, but on the other hand they want to be able to move about freely in their home and not be tied to their hi-fi system. It is precisely for this reason that the audio specialist from Heilbronn, Germany, has included the T 5 p in its portfolio since 2010 since these headphones are optimised for use on portable audio equipment. And as previously with the stationary T 1, a second generation of the T 5 p has now also been launched – for an even more perfect music experience.

  • Best portable (closed ear) headphones!
I bought these headphones a year ago. I spent a good month browsing YouTube recommendations and other various headphone forums trying to find what would best suit my needs for what I specifically wanted and needed. I previously owned a pair of audio technicas m50x and really liked the affordability, design, and quality of the sound. But after two years of daily use it completely broke. I wasnt sure about buying something new, while I knew what the m50x's had to offer I wanted to try something new sounding. So after convincing myself that it is worth the price tag for someone who consumes to much media, my curiosity led me to now owning beyerdynamic t5p 2nd gens. I choose these because they are the a contender for being some of the best closed ear headphones that have a wide sounding stage. They completely cover my big ears and are comfortable to wear. I wear them for several hours a day and they never feel clunky even though they are big. I do have a big head though, so someone with a smaller head might find them to be heavy. In terms of quality for (closed ear headphones) nothing I've heard comes close. I haven't listened to many headphones though so take that what you will. The build quality is superb and really amazed me when I first opened the case. For those of you who just want to know what's not to like and would like to know if there's anything that should hold them back from buying these fantastic headphones I'll try to list off a few minor and major weaknesses. 1. The auxiliary cable is made of high quality stiff fibers. But like all cables they have a relatively short lifespan. Especially for those who are traveling. That really isnt my problem because I already knew I would have to replace them. It's that the replacements that I've seen are quite expensive for auxiliary chords. I've forgotten how much exactly but something like 50 to 60 dollars! If you dont mind spending that much every half year or year depending on how much you do or dont travel then go for it! 2. Next is I bought my headphones from the used section for 650. The description said only cosmetic damage. I trusted them because of well just the discount and that it was only a "cosmetic discount" but after a week of very gentle use the headphone size adjustment stopped working. I've been wearing the headphones for about a year having one side slightly longer in adjustment. Back when I first got them I was about to return them when I saw that beyerdynamic had a warranty. But I had entirely forgot that warranties are only valid on brand new items! So if you buy these headphones (used) remember that the warranty that comes with the headphones arent valid!! 3. The case is built well in terms of premium materials and durability. But the design is lacking and doesn't store the cables to your headphones well. I spend a couple of minutes trying to find a way to fit the cables in without instantly shortening the lifespan and twisting them. 4. The Beyerdynamic's Warranty! For me this made me purchase these headphones specifically. I didn't read everything on their website I just saw that they offered a 5 year warranty. Please go to their website and read their terms for the warranty they offer. I read it and they do not cover a lot of things that you might have thought they might replace. So much for keeping it consise. Here I'll try to now. Sound, 10/10 (for closed ear) Build, 8/10 great small sliver of lambskin on top for decoration. Cables, 4/10 they feel premium and their replacement cost is also premium! Their lifespan as a cable is average. The warranty was a finicky thing that bit me in the butt. I would like it to be more straightforward for the average consumer but maybe that's just warranties. 5/10 Would I still buy used even coming from my own experience? I would because I dont think they are worth their full price. At least coming from my current financial position in life. Overall subject rating, 6/10 If a thousand dollars isnt a financial decision that you can afford and have the funds to buy new replacement auxiliary chords I would rate the overall experience. 10/10 ... show more

  • So this is what a flagship portable headphone sounds like...
I got this headphone used in "like new" amazon condition. Proud owner of the Sennheiser Momentum, AKG Q701, Denon AHD 600, Beyerdynamic Custom One Pros, Audiotechnica ATH M50, and Grado RS2i. I just happened to have just enough money from saving and decided to go for one of my dream headphones. I definitely never imagined that one day I would even think of going to the 1000 dollar plus territory. I was initially deciding on either the T5P 2nd gens, the Fostex TH900 mk2, Audeze LCD XC, Final Design Sonorous VI, or MrSpeakers Ether C since I have friends who owner a few of these and others were auditioned in a store. I settled with the T5P since it had the best isolation of the others and was most comfortable. Those who tested These headphones claim that they are also good at every genre, so it was a no brainer for me. I can't imagine going portable with the Fostex being that they don't feel as solid or durable. Not to mention that they leak. LCD XC is honestly very detailed but has a very small soundstage for that price and even compared to the T5P for significantly less. It's also unbearably uncomfortable being hands down the heaviest headphones I've ever worn (LCD 3 is a close 2nd obviously). I didn't find enough info on the Final Design Sonorous VI (they do look sexy) and no one I know owns them. I almost bought the Ether C but they are harder to drive and don't feel as comfortable to wear long term. The winner is T5P 2nd gen! The sound quality and accuracy of the Ether C is worth boasting over all the other headphones for sure, but needless to say, it ain't that much of an improvement over the T5P. Not enough to justify the much higher price tag. If Ether C is a 10/10 closed back headphone, I will gladly give T5P a 9.5/10. That good and worlds better than all of my other headphones. I was surprised that it was more detailed than my Grado RS2i and had a bigger soundstage than my AKG Q701. The bass was so full of extension and punchy when the recording called for it. I heard the 1st T5P had a treble overload. They definitely have treble, but it is soothing and wasnt buried behind the bass and mids. These headphones feel like an open headphone and I can't recommend them enough. ... show more

  • Midrange, but excellent for that!
= 600Ω Beyer Flagship with high gauss technology + Efficient: Reasonably well driven with an LG V20 or V20. Can be driven by most portable equipment, but not maybe to the full volume you'd like. + Balanced: Will produce reasonably good mixes and masters, better than the DT990. + Great detail, just a little lacking in clarity. Unless you are used to spending $1000 on headphones (or you got other certain BeyerDynamics), you will hear lyrics you've not been able to make out before. + Beyer makes some good mics, too. – If using with portable devices, for more clarity and bass, these headphones will benefit from an amp or DAC/Amp. – Not as much resolution as the incomparable BeyerDynamic 990T from the mid-1980s. – Bass shy (based on Quad DAC of LG V20). Lots of people say these are just balanced in bass. I wouldn't say that at all. The DT990s of the mid-1980s just did a fantastic job of resolving bass down to below the basement and treble. If you want timbre, those have it. If you complain these got too much trouble just turn down the EQ on both ends, and you've still got the resolution. RECOMMENDATION You have have $1000 to spend and you really value your midrange above all else? Get these. You want fantastic detail on top and bottom? Get the old 990T 250Ω, in any ohmage you like, and test it with a good DAC/Amp. If that's not to your liking, at least you know where to go from there. That's the DT990 and DT880, or one of the high-end closed cans. If that doesn't do the trick, you better talk to Stax. ... show more
