  • Review as a Companion to Tarot of the Divine
Paying extra for this book as a companion to Tarot of the Divine was worth it, imo, for the full-size, full-color images and to know more about the stories depicted in the deck. But don't expect the full story -- only one page is dedicated to each folktale or mythology with the intent to introduce and prompt you to look for more info. It is, however, enough to connect the artist's intent with the imagery and cards they're on. I'm not sure that the stories are organized in any particular order, but I wish it was in the order of the Tarot cards for quick reference. The stories used in both the Major and Minor Arcana are all mixed up, making the table of contents useless and the index essential for those using the deck. Since the figure(s) in each card aren't identified except in the deck's LWB, you'll have to find the card in the LWB, then look up the story in the index. ... show more

  • Wide-ranging anthology with brief stories and nice illustrations
I’m going to be teaching World Mythology to elementary students this fall, so I have purchased over 30 books of stories around the world. This one has a lot of stories; a very wide variety. Each story is only a single page, facing an accompanying illustration. The illustrations are cool, but in some ways it feels the stories are there to complement the illustration instead of the reverse. The stories are told very briefly and very simply. There is not a lot of detail and certainly no length. If you are looking for depth in these myths, this is not the book for you. If you want to get the basics of the story down so you can retell in your own words, or you really are more interested in the illustrations, it will be a good fit. ... show more

  • Great Book (though bizarrely organized)
I purchased the related tarot deck and loved the cards and though the included LWB hinted at the accompanying tales, I just had to get this book to find out the stories behind the fantastic art. I love having larger versions of the arts and knowing the full stories helps in both connecting with and reading the cards. The book is high quality with crisp printing on good paper. The stories in some cases are a bit succinct and some definitely could benefit from being drawn out more, as each story consists of just two pages (one for the art and one for the actual story) but it captures the essence of each fable well enough. My one major complaint (and the reason I deducted a star) is the stories are not arranged in the same sequence as the deck and seem to be in no particular order. Therefore, if using with the deck, looking up the story for the card(s) drawn is rather complicated. If one doesn’t immediately recognize the story portrayed on the card (many will probably be familiar but many more will not be so) they then must refer to the LWB (as the story is not referenced on the card by name) and then go find the “full” story in this book by using the index in the back where stories are listed by title and then turn to that page. This would have been so much easier if the stories were organized in the same manner as the deck. It is still though a very good purchase and necessary to fully appreciate the deck. ... show more

  • these are not stories
there are very few actual stories... and not well written ( not engaging ) There is more of a Wikipedia summary of the facts and myths surrounding the theme. I was excited to sit down with a friend and read a one page story. But page after page, no story, just history and facts , and rather disjointed. The artwork is beautiful. Which is why I bought it. Probably I'll write stories to match the artwork myself. ... show more

  • Beautiful book and artwork that's very inclusive of stories from around the world
This is a gorgeous small book with artwork that also used in the Tarot of the Divine tarot deck by the same artist. While this book compliments the tarot deck, it can easily stand alone as a small book of folk stories from around the world. It's actually one of the better compilations I've found. It's very inclusive of religious stories from many different denominations, folk tales, fairy tales, myths, etc. and spans the globe to represent a wide variety cultures. Each story is one page so it's a quick and easy read. For the most part it's suitable for young children; you might just have to edit here and there as you read aloud. For example, my 8 year old son is really enjoying these as bedtime stories... but we skipped Oedipus Rex. :D ... show more

  • Gorgeous Book, so glad I pre-ordered!
The quality of the paper, and illustrations is stunning. I love the concept, having all these unknown -to me- fairy tales and fables from all over the world now in a book, along with a Tarot Deck that corresponds with the folklore figures! I pre-ordered both and I’m so glad I did. Can’t wait to show it off to friends, who I’m sure will want to get their own copy. ... show more

  • So beautiful!
I am in love with this book. I wasn’t looking for it. It popped up in my recommended section when I was looking for another book about Yokai. I thought it looked really really interesting and got it on a whim. I’m so glad I did! The stories are very short, but they are engaging and have absolutely stunning artwork. They are also a great jumping off point to research these characters more in depth through other writings. This books gives very brief telling of stories from all over the world. Like Coyote, or the tale of six swans, or the boy and the dragon pearl. Just stories from all peoples and civilizations. So now I’m looking for other books that go into more depth of these stories. It’s the artwork that really makes this book worth it. ... show more
