The ability to set this up on a makeshift table outside of you normal work area is awesome. Sometimes you just don't want to clean up the mess made after using a fixed vice or need to have a vice portable. This one also has the ability to mount directly to a surface which is nice. Now the bad. The anvil side of it is a bit on the lacking side. It's just so/so and is a bit too small to do much with. The rubber cap on the holder falls off, I might put a drop a glue on it to hold in place. The holder for the worm gear is a bit on the loose side as well. Everything works fine but still seems like it should be tighter. The big thing for me was that one of the holes that should have been threaded was not threaded. If your getting a vice like this most likely you also have taps as I do and was able to tap the hole to match the others and use the provided screws. Seems like a big miss from quality control and since it isn't coated like the rest of the vice I suspect it will start rusting far sooner. Overall though I am enjoying this vice as a supplement to my big stationary one. ... show more

This is a reasonably heavy duty, mid-size vice. The screw and other moving parts seem to be as functional as expected. - no quality issues I have found.I have a large mounted bench vice, and a clampable one similar to this but smaller. This one is a good compromise between those. The big one gets used for most things, but isn't always "available where needed," and the small one is really handy but limited on what it can hold. That this one can be moved makes it more versatile than the large one, and it is much more heavy duty than the small one (although it is not something you can keep in a tool box like my small one). As my large bench one gets used the most , I will keep this for use with the clamp. If someone didn't have a mounted vise, or a small bench, they might choose to mount this one (with wing nuts maybe?) but keep the clamp handy for use elsewhere if occasionally needed. ... show more

I had a vise on my workbench but it was always in the way for some of my bigger projects. This vise solves that issue, it gives you two mounting options either four bolts through the workbench or the C-clap. A bench vise is a must have in the shop or garage. But sometimes that big monster bench vise is a little much. I picked this up for those times when I didn't need the big vise, and it's working out well. You have 2 mounting options which is great if space is an issue. You can mount it to the bracket which will clamp onto the edge of yoir bench or countertop, or you can hard mount it straight to the bench. The media could not be loaded. I bought the yost one 5 years ago for half this price and it's held up great - been just the thing I needed as someone who does minimal metal working. The shortcoming of that vise, was that I had to mount it to a piece of plywood so I could place it on the corner of my workbench and then clamp it down (I don't have room for a permanently mounted vise). This one is almost a clone of the yost one, but it has the bracket you can use to temporarily mount it to things. I'm not sure if that's worth the extra $15 in today's prices... I think it probably is, as they even include two kinds of hardware for mounting, which is really nice. The only drawback for me is that I only have a couple inches of clamping overhang on my workbench, and the jaw of the vise is several inches (maybe 4-5), so it wants to slide to the side if you can't press the jaw flush against the mounting surface. That said, the vise is solid. Has an anvil area, pipe/round clamping jaws build in, swivel, and as noted above, a nice hardware package to mount temporarily or through a table/bench. I started getting a little sentimental when unboxing and setting up this vise, because except for color, it’s very similar to the one my parents had when I was growing up. And yes, it just got a little harder to write this review. With similarities aside, I’ll be the first to admit that this vise is better quality and more solidly built than the one I knew. It’s heavy, holds objects very securely, and has a durable powder-coat type finish. I also appreciate that I was able to attach it to my current work surface quite easily. It came with short bolts to thread the base to the table mounting bracket, which is really nice if you want to take it with you. But this vise also comes with longer bolts, nuts, and washers to more permanently mount it to any surface you choose. I also like the green, hard-rubber/plastic jaw inserts you can use to protect more delicate items. The inserts have embedded magnets, so you can insert and remove them quickly. They’re textured with various indentations for holding different objects sturdily, like dowels or small diameter pipe. I have only good things to say about this vise which surpasses the one I was familiar with in terms of finish, function, and build. And I will proudly revisit my childhood whenever I use it.
