    • Ouch, my cheeks and cheekbones!!!
The helmet has only been used for about 30 miles so far, but while I was expecting a tight fit for a new helmet, this one is almost intolerable in the squeeze it puts on my cheekbones. I'm about 190 lbs., male, and have had many helmets over the decades, including Bell, which has been my favorite brand. This is an XL size, so it shouldn't hurt to wear. However, it is so tight that it causes my cheeks to push up and begin interfering in my vision! I can't do anything about it except to see if it will relax over time. I certainly am not going to try and pack something in the helmet to stretch or modify the helmet's cheek pads, since I am concerned I could compromise the safety and other quality aspects of the helmet. The manual says the cheek pads are sized and interchangeable, so perhaps Bell would support me in this issue. I haven't used the helmet in sunlight yet, so I can't vouch for the transitions, or darkening/lightening, of the "Panovision" shield. But it does a somewhat fair job of resisting fogging, with things just appearing a little granular instead of foggy. Not the best, and a double shield with a seal would probably be better, but that would have costed more, especially with a transitions screen add-on, than the roughly $500 I paid for this helmet in November, 2022. The vents seem to work well, but again this is a preliminary review and I haven't had time to put the helmet to much use yet. As for the vents, it's almost winter at the time of this writing, so I'm using the vents at first to clear warm, moist air after starting the ride, then closing the vents to stay warmer. I also haven't tested the "chin curtain" for removabiility, and will need to see why and how to remove it. The "Neck Curtain" doesn't seem to be a separate thing as the manual shows, so I'll have to check that out in more detail. The small owner's manual needs improvement. Many of the pictures show components as black-on-black, almost no contrast. This is any photographer's challenge, of course, but a larger format with a close-up of components in high, contrasting light would greatly improve the quality of the pictures. So for this initial review, my chief complaint is about the great discomfort the helmet causes on the cheeks. When I write an update, I hope I'll have some good news.     • Very good choice
This is a very good helmet for the money. It is an excellent choice for both racing (my use) and someone who wants a very good helmet for the street. This is essentially a "lower" version of the Bell Race Star and is the entry into the Star line. That means it has the MIPS system and also includes the emergency release cheek pads. The emergency release cheek pads allow emergency personnel the ability to pull the cheek pads before trying to remove the helmet. This allows a much gentler removal of the helmet reducing the chance of exasperating a neck injury. This feature alone is worth the extra money over a budget helmet. This helmet also include a the Transition shield which is truly awesome. This is a shield that makes the helmet a great choice for the street. No more having to choose to wear a tinted or a clear shield. If you leave in the bright sun, and return in the dark, the shield automatically adjusts. It really works too. One thing that make it a little less pleasant for the street is the fact that there is no partially open detent. The shield is either fully open or fully closed. When closed you could not "latch" it shut, but that would leave only the smallest crack and doesn't add much if any air to the air flow. For a bike where your head is well exposed to air flow, sport bikes and cruisers with no shield, the vents flow a good amount of air. For anything that has a shield blocking most of the air from the rider, you only have the choices of fully open or fully closed. That is something to bare in mind. Overall this is an excellent helmet for the race track, whether it be full on racing or trackdays, for less money than the Race Star. For the street it is a very good option for many types of bikes but maybe not all. One thing I will mention is that for race only I also have a Scorpion R1 Air. The Scorpion is an excellent helmet and considerably lighter than this helmet and also less expensive. It doesn't have the transition shield but for racing that's not as big of a deal. For race only I'd probably give the R1 Air the nod, but itโ€™s a close call and for many it may come down to graphics. For someone who wants one helmet for both the track and the street I would give this helmet the nod. In reality both are great helmets and represent great values. ... show more

    • My first Bell Helmet
So this is my first ever Bell helmet and being mostly an HJC and Aria guy maybe I am a little biased but I do like it. While I do historically wear an intermediate oval medium in Arai the BELL Star DLX MIPS Helmet (FH Victory Circle) is a little snug, but it is a little more of a track helmet with some touring prowess vs. being a touring helmet with track-inspired prowess so I get it and I'm sure this will get better over time. The pro-tint shield(dark during the day & turns clear at night), vent circulation, and helmet noise are all amazing and even though the helmet comes with graphics there is plenty of room to further customize it if you're into that sort of thing. Overall at this price point, you could do way worse and not a whole lot better in my humble opinion. ... show more
