If trying to tune it, you can get the peg to turn to the right key, but when you let go of the peg it just flips back to its original position

As a strings teacher who has had students struggle to play on these, DO NOT buy instruments like these. They are made out of ALL the wrong materials and NO string instrument should ever be painted. Natural wood colors/varnishes only! $85 is way too cheap for a quality student violin setup, while simultaneously being a ripoff for the product you’d be buying. Go to the website of a legitimate seller of stringed instruments (sharmusic, southwest strings) or a local shop with a luthier and knowledgeable staff or look up rental options such as Music & Arts. Learning to play a stringed instrument is difficult enough for a beginner, so don’t make it more difficult for them with one of these what we call “instrument-shaped objects”. You can also ask a local strings teacher or school orchestra teacher for recommendations! It may be more expensive but it will save you money in the not-even-that-long run when you’d have to replace everything that breaks or doesn’t last!
