    • Only wish it folded flat
My daughter is of the age to start learning an instrument at school. She was interested in violin but they don't have a program for that one. I decided to take her to a music store and we were able to get a nice used one for her to learn on. She has lessons through the store, but she wanted more to do at home. I saw this and jumped on it. The book itself is very well written. I have played clarinet myself since I was 10 years old, so I am very adept at reading music. I was going to teach her myself, but the book does such a good job that I didn't need to do much. The notes are color coded and letters are clearly listed. This gets kids used to seeing the colors and the letters while learning. Towards the back of the book the letters disappear so they are reading the notes themselves. Still color coded, but starting to be natural by then. She is doing fairly well with this book. She has anxiety at lessons, so she prefers to work alone at home. I can hear her practicing daily in her room. She almost exclusively uses this book. The only thing I would change is the binding of the book itself. I got her a music stand, but even then I had to practically brake the binding to get it to sit flat on the stand and not close on itself all the time. Great beginners book. I wish I had something like this for clarinet when I started, would have been so much easier to learn to read music. :) ... show more

Some would say this is fine for adult beginners, but I would say this is for children. It's music for very young children. I expected some of that, but this said "beginner" and suitable for all ages, so I incorrectly assumed it would have more age-appropriate music for adults who want to learn violin. I won't be using this and will look for a book that specifies it's for adult beginners that includes modern music instead of nursery rhymes. ... show more
