    • Need more than just this song book
If you are starting with the violin you will need to learn how to tune, which includes fine tuning on a violin. You will also need to learn how to rosen the bow, and how to use the bow. I play the guitar, ukulele, and to a lesser extent the piano. I have a violin and have played some on it before getting this book, but have not had professional instruction. This falls short as a replacement for that as well as it doesn't cover the above-mentioned skills you need. IF you have taken lessons but are perhaps rusty or not doing them anymore, then I think this would be more appropriate. It offers some fun kid songs and I think the way it says which string to use with which finger is very helpful and easy to do. It is similar to doing tablature with a guitar/ukulele but is presented in a different look. I've been pleased with other books from this company and think they do a good job at a reasonable price, but this is NOT for the absolute beginner who has never tuned a violin, etc. ... show more

    • Great For A Beginner
I must be honest and state that I have a degree in music education. OK. No big deal. But why would I order a basic book teaching violin, especially since one of my two major instruments was violin? Simple. I wanted to see what modern music training literature is like. I did not specify that I finished my degree in 1969. Yes, kids, I am THAT old!! But, seriously, that is why I ordered this book. Frankly, I was not disappointed. This book is, decidedly, EXTREMELY basic. But it starts its journey by providing background information on music, generally. How to read, etc. And it does so well. I can tell you that, when the student completes this book, he or she will NOT be a concert violinist. But she or he WILL be ahead of someone who has never taken a violin lesson. So, if you are looking for something that will, basically, get you STARTED and ready to continue onto more complex learning, you can't go wrong with this book. And did I mention that this is not just for kids? Well, it is not just for kids. It is for anyone who knows little about the performing side of music and wants a gentle takeoff. This book will do that for you. Whether you will be able to play when other people can hear you and not have them running for earplugs will be up to you. No self-taught book on playing an instrument can guarantee that. But, if you apply the lessons in this book, and if you actually LISTEN to your playing, I think you might just find your family or friends will not go running when you play. You might even get some applause, and let me tell you, that feels GOOD!!! ... show more

Nice and easy to understand and read. I'm an adult with some violin experience, but still feel I need to start with the basics again. This is perfect and easy to brush up and practice and old loved hobby

It was fine. Explained very fundamental things. Might work as a "first" book but it doesn't progress to as many skills and notes as other beginner books
