These boots are absolutely the best work boot I've owned. After nearly three month's use, here is my assessment. Fit: they are absolutely true to size. My size 10 foot pushes up on the exact line between 10 and 10 1/2. This makes shoe purchases difficult for me, dependant on the last. The Bates Tactical allows just a fraction extra length so my foot feels totally comfortable all day long and never pushes up against the toe, even carrying a heavy loads down hill. Comfort: the combination of water proof fabric and leather make these boots extremely comfortable and easy to break in within a few days. Even better, the side zipper makes them a breeze to get in and out of. The plastic eyelet at the fifth lace point allows me to tie off the lace below the ankle for extra freedom of movement when I don't need the support; and won't come undone when getting in and out via the side zipper. Weight: this is the best feature. These hard-toe work boots weight about as much as a pair of lightweight hiking boots! Compared to the bulk of 3- 5 lbs shoes out there (and I've tried them all) these boots are a cloud to walk in. I'll address some of the negative reviews I read. First, if you plan to throw these boots into a wood chipper or drag the toes over concrete regularly, these may not be the best for you. The leather over the toe box feels a little lighter than heavier boots with metal toe caps. Also legitimate is the complaint that the seam dividing the lower and upper parts of the tongue wears on the ankle. Bates would be wise to redesign the tongue so that seam falls lower on the sides. I used a needle and thread to put an 1/8" dart on the inside seam. This was probably unnecessary as after a few days wear the boots broke in with no more issue. If you experience that problem, my advice would be to first wear the boots a few hours a day at home until they break in. All in all, I'm very satisfied with this purchase. These are super light, super comfortable, super smart-looking safety boots I can wear all day long, even just for hanging out! ... show more

    • Likely the Best Work Boot On the Market Today
Size: 7 Color: Black
The Bates Men's Tactical Sport 2 Mid Side Zip Safety Composite Toe are likely the best work half-high boot on the market today. PROS 1) It works well when working, without being a full-size boot. 2) Soles have good traction, could always have a little more traction. 3) Boots with an integral side zipper is a must, for easy on and easy off! 4) Vented for warm weather conditions. CONS 1) Boot sizes are too large, whereas I'm an 8.5 typically common/normal size shoe, I'm a minimum 7 with these boots! Matter of fact, 7's might be still slightly too large once broken in! 2) Boots need to be well broken in, either using mink oil or soaked in water, else the boots will be very stiff, which is good but bad for the feet. 3) If well broken in using water or mink oil, the soles can pull apart from the boot, requiring wood working bar clamp and a good shoe glue. Once a good shoe glue is used, I've witnessed no further pulling apart of the sole from the boot! Believe I only used water with my initial pair long ago, and close to 6-12 months of extensive use, the soles simply pulled apart from the boot. ... show more

Coworkers ask me how I can wear boots all day. "Try them", I tell them. I destroy shoes. It's just a fact of life. It usually takes 6 months before I wear down the sole, or split the seam, or crack the leather. Not these. I wear a size 12 EEEE. I only have to buy Bates brand every 5 or so years. Had to replace both zippers in boots after less than a week of wearing them. Boots make a material noise that is loud. Once i had zippers installed and wore boots were so uncomfortable I stopped wearing them. In total I may have worn these boots one week. I have purchased these before and they were great.     • Gets the job done on a budget but feels cheaper than the big brands
After my previous Magnum boots were discontinued and I could not find a suitable replacement from that brand, I began on a hunt for new boots. There are a lot of boot manufactures out there and some work better than others. Danners do not fit my feet so those were out. 5.11 is overpriced and they are not really a boot company anyways. Solomans are way too expensive and too beefy. I ended up with Merrell vs. Bates vs. Under Armor. All three companies offered a different approach to boots and I would recommend others on a duty boot journey to consider the company and what you really need. Merrell is a hiking boot company so they make hiking boots. Bates is a value level duty boot company so they make affordable boots. Under Armor is a performance athletic company so they make more athletic style boots. I didn't need a hiking boot so Merrell was out, Bates felt cheap so they were gone, so I went with UA in the end...however... The bates are not pretending to be anything they are not. They are a value brand boot that many people wear and love, however, they just felt cheap to me. The sole was clearly less well engineered than the Merrells or UA and everything else just felt less quality. ... show more
