i bought this item with high hopes but when i got them out of the box a lot of the claims that were so shiny in the description were very confusing in practice recommend that you have an experienced radio guru that can show you how and explain how to get the full use out of this product otherwise it is just a fancy set of toy walkie talkies that will spend a lot of time in a desk drawer ... show more

I've been a Ham for 30+ years and this radio is a fantastic value! I already have an S9+ dual band version of this radio and when I saw this tri band with 220MHz, I snapped it up as I've always wanted to work that band. I see some folks complaining about not being able to program it with CHIRP software, but all they have to do is use the Radioddity selection in CHIRP and it works just fine. I also found it extremely easy to program manually, so I find no fault at all. ... show more

    • Defective out of the box
Unit I received had obviously been used and returned. Battery was already on radio, power knob was in on position and battery totally dead. Was missing one of the two antennas. After charging powered on unit to see was previously programmed with over 30 custom channels with DCS/CTCS codes, so obviously not a factory set program. Cannot say as to transmit quality since main speaker was bad out of the box, absolutely no audio at all. Not the first issue I've had with Baofeng radios but definitely the biggest. Quality control is a HUGE problem with this company in general. I've purchased several different Baofeng models both HAM and GMRS and have had about a 50% rate of issues with radios ranging across the board. Bad battery out of the box, bad threads on antenna connectors, knobs coming off and NONE of them have come close to advertised Watt power on transmit. I get being off by maybe a watt or less but I've had several that with a full charge wouldn't even hit half the advertised power output on my meters. I understand these are meant to be a low price, entry level HT radio and expect there to be a FEW caveats to them, BUT having to order 3 units of the same radio in hopes of getting ONE single mostly functional unit is unacceptable. For someone new to this hobby I could see the issues with these radios putting such a sour taste in a new hobbyists mouth that they may drop the hobby all together. If you decide to roll the dice with this unit be prepared to potentially have issues out of the box or shortly after. MAke sure to check EVERYTHING and run it through its paces ASAP to debug the unit amd return if necessary withing the return period because warranty is practically nill, tech support pretty much by email only and replacement parts almost expensive as buying a new unit. ... show more
