  • Better than I expected
I will start by saying that I did not expect very much for the cheap price that I paid for this hatchet, so I can easily say that it is better than I expected. I have developed an interest in wood carving with a hatchet or axe and I am planning to buy a much more expensive carving hatchet if my interest continues. I bought this Bahco to test my interest and see if it would be sustained long enough to justify buying the one that I really want which cost about nine times as much as the Bahco. It holds a cutting edge as good as any cheap hardware store grade axe that I have ever owned, but it did take about 15 minutes with a grinder, file and diamond hone to get it shaped and sharpened the first time. The one gripe that I do have with it is the shape of the handle. The handle seems to be too thin and does not fit my hand very comfortably. I will probably make a new handle that I like better and while I have the head off of the handle, I will sand down some of square edges and corners on the head. The handle is decent quality but it just does not fit my hand. ... show more

  • Awesome!
Looks exactly as described! Just got mine today can't wait to try it out! For a $22.00 axe it looks and feels awesome. I will note, I can choke up all the way, and the handle feels good all around. The bare edge is coated with what I'm guessing is enamel. The head on mine is also stamped. It also comes with a little rubber blade cover that I think I'll hang onto to make a sheath with, and yes the wedge does have a loop or hanger, I think I'll cut mine off like Bensoutdoor since its broke anyways. ***UPDATE There are about two or three things you need to know before you buy this. 1. I bought this hatchet knowing it will break. Its a tool, its 20 dollars, and its not going to compete with the best in the industry. Why? you would be loosing money producing a tool and only charging $20 apiece from the time it takes to make a top notch tool... pretty cut and dry here... 2. the paint on the handle will apparently blister your hand (according to old jimbo, axe expert), either stand, rub, scrape it off, get blisters, or wrap the handle 3. Uh last but not least buy a $20 dollar tool expecting to own a tool worth $20... it won't hold and edge here lets be realistic people. For a reference please see wranglerstar's video 'Bahco axe update' on youtube, I didn't watch the whole thing, no offence, to anyone! I Don't have the time to watch his videos, I work 60 hours a week... I bought this knowing what it is and plan on its ultimate destruction followed by a full refurbish. So my advice if you want an axe under 20$... don't. either buy a used head that you did some homework on, on ebay (I'm currently biding on many that have flushed in lately), or if you got the cash and, well there's no one stopping you, buy a nice one like a Roselli, a gransfors bruks, uhm... wetterlings... I would recommend Snow and Nealley but their heads appear to be made in china, and hults bruks got pretty good reviews from oldjimbo old jimbo told me also a friend's of his axe started to chip at the edge, he said to keep filing away at it and it would be fine and it was. I also saw a picture of a wetterlings that chipped from hitting a knot in a tree... and uhm, well don't do that, unless you want an $80+ axe to chip... ** One more thing old jimbo told me, let your axe handle season for a bit before traveling to the mountains with it, or it might split apparently. axe handles should be dried already, but there's a difference between wood that's been seasoned for 1 year, and one that's been seasoned for 3, to 7 years... for a reference on that one please see the book hunting with bow and arrow(its public domain meaning its free to download, goggle hunting with bow and arrow PDF) chapter 5, paragraph 17. that may be for making a bow, but my point is still the same, wood changes in time and depending on the moisture content in the air. if you don't know where to start: do yourself a huge favor and do what I did, watch dave canterbury's '21st Century Longhunter Axes, Hawks, and the Nesmuk Double bit' video on youtube once again, did not watch the whole thing... don't have time, just listened to the axe names and said, 'that's interesting'... or you could goggle carving axe then switch to image view and scroll down... pick one you want and read a bit about it my fav looking ones are from: holtheathwoodentreen outdoors.magazine.free Scandinavian Bowl Carving *if you just goggle those you should come up seeing the same images I did, sorry, can't post links on here... well that's about all I know. Do your homework before you buy and don't be afraid to try something out, remember you only buy a rolex if you can afford 2... I would recommend custom maker's and their axe's... like a blacksmith's but without knowledge and reviews of their axe's or their process's, well your taking a gamble for their expertise... that they didn't mess it up. Some people may be irritated at me for posting this much knowledge on amazon, but the way I see it amazon reviewer's who know more than me have been helping save me money for, 7 years now... including alternative names, pros, cons, where to look, what to do, useful information, and I owe em one. ... show more

  • I was very disappointed when I opened the box and saw the little ...
Bahco (now owned by SNA) is a European company that used to subcontract with Helko Werk of Germany to make many of their axes. In fact, if you expand the picture of the advertisement, you can see the "HW" on the poll of the axe. So, I ordered this and hoped I would get a Helko- made axe or at least, a European-made one. I was very disappointed when I opened the box and saw the little "Made in China" sticker affixed to the handle. Logically, I know that a guy in China can operate forging machinery as well as any Norseman in the deepest halls of Scandinavia or any German in the Ruhr Valley, but if I had known that this was made in China, I would have bought a Helko or a Marbles (at least made in El Salvador is sort of made in America), for political reasons. The hatchet itself isn't bad. The head appears nicely forged, everything square with a nice thin bit. It also appears to be made out of 1045 steel, which isn't bad for an axe. The wood (ash?) handle is well fitted with no gaps in the eye and didn't loosen with some light use. Grain orientation is completely wrong, so I can see how people have been able to break the bigger axes' handles. Since this is a smaller hatchet, I doubt I'll be whacking anything hard enough to break the handle, but I'll try to update this review if that happens. I've seen several people on Amazon echoing Youtube Wranglerstar's negative comments on this hatchet. It appears to me that he took an almost knife thin bit and then filed it into what appears to be a Scandinavian edge. Imagine taking a Mora knife and hitting the back of it with a hammer into hard wood. Something's going to happen to the edge. At least with the 1045 (C45 as Bahco calls it) steel, the edge rolled instead of chipped. I filed only enough to get an edge since the bit was so thin already (as I wanted in a small 1.3 lb hatchet) and then went to work with the stones. It now has a sharp edge, but with enough steel behind it to keep it from rolling. After using it on white oak limbs, I haven't had any problems. I will probably keep this hatchet and use it for limbing trees and splitting kindling. I just wish Bahco and Amazon would have made clear that this hatchet is now made in China. ... show more

  • Bahco 14.25 inch Axe.
When I received this axe, I went to my backyard, and chopped down an old fig tree. The next day, I removed the stump. This little axe works fine. Unfortunately, the bit needs to be redone after every use. The handle is very smooth and comfortable. No sheath. Wish I could give it five stars, but the steel is too soft. ... show more

  • Disappointing Bahco quality
The head is well made although not at all sharp. It will take a lot of work to profile it to a sharp edge. The handle leaves a lot to be desired and it will not be easy to find one to fit for a replacement. More like a club with a poor handle. The grain in the handle is cross instead of vertical and it is a little warped. May as well buy a cheap box store hatchet with a steel or fiberglass handle and save your money. ... show more
