  • I use it weekly.
Style Name: Airbrush
Badger makes excellent airbrushes and the solar is no exception. This brush is capable of very fine details of you're knowledgeable about thinning and pressure. It's well machined and quite durable. If you're experienced at all with airbrushes, takedown and cleaning is a breeze. Badger uses proprietary threads so you'll need an adapter to set your brush up with a standard hose. ... show more

  • More in an airbrush than I'll probably ever need.
Style Name: Airbrush
I purchased this airbrush mainly for the purposes of doing detail work on plastic model kits. It turns out to actually be overkill for that task, as compared to the Iwata HP-CS I typically use, the lines from this brush are extraordinarily fine and clean despite the tiny width. Using this Sotar I have been able to duplicate the look of some texture decals with good success as well. 15-20psi is all I needed for various types of paints including Vallejo Model-Air, thinned Tamiya Acrylic and Vallejo Game Color, and Testors enamels. I think pretty much any paint that has a fine enough pigment (or can be thinned to be similar to such) can go through this system without problem. I will note, despite thinning them a lot, and using various combinations of thinner and retarder medium, I did have lots of "spatter" problems with Humbrol Acrylics. I think maybe the pigment of those is just not "fine" enough for Sotar regardless of thinned consistency. The included alternative needle/cap combo might remedy this, but I didn't try it yet. A word on the issue of authenticity of the product. I have looked over the package and the unit as carefully as I think anyone can expect and I find no sign that this is a "knockoff" product; so don't let the low price fool you. My unit came with the foam cutout box and the extra needle with wrench and extra crown cap. Also included were the warranty registration card addressed to Badger and the assembler signature page with parts list that other reviews have mentioned. It's quite possible these units are refurbished, however; as I did find some small dried paint inside the cup. Also the trigger action and spring needed a couple of drops of oil. After that, everything was smooth and ready to go. ... show more

  • Superb product
Style Name: Airbrush
Buying a Badger product is a zero risk exercise. The product performs superbly and is built to last. I own several airbrushes from most of the leading airbrush manufacturers and this Sotar 2020 would be my first choice for fine and detail work. It's important to thin your paint well, this applies for any airbrush and particularly so with a fine needle airbrush and adjust your air pressure to match the paint and several other factors which I will not elaborate on, so assuming you are able to get the basics more or less right you will experience just how easy and satisfying it is to control and achieve some very impressive results with this Sotor 2020. As much as I love airbrushing, I loath the airbrush clean up afterwards. This unit is a breeze to clean; the base of the cup is easily accessible and close to the nozzle assembly so the amount of material that would need to be removed is minimal. And lastly the feel of this unit in your hand feels natural making it very comfortable to use for extended periods. It’s an airbrush that has clearly been designed for discerning airbrush artists and from the rest of us mere mortals, we thank them for helping influence the creation of such a fine product. ... show more

  • Get the GSI PS-289 instead
Style Name: Airbrush
This is by far the most finicky air brush I've ever used. I've been spraying for a decent amount of time, long enough to not be a complete novice but good lord this thing is a pain. Inconsistencies spraying paint, constant back flow into the cup, needle clogging, etc. You like acrylic paints? Good luck or be prepared to HEAVILY thin them down. The only paint types that I could get a semi consistent spray from were GaiaNotes lacquer and Mr. Hobby Lacquers. Tamiya or Vallejo were way too difficult to use. Picked up a PS-289 and haven't looked back since. Mr. Hobby makes some great quality brushes and it's way less of a pain in the ass to use (also, it has a .18mm needle too so you can still do fine detail work) ... show more

  • An okay airbrush and a so-so value
Style Name: Airbrush
Let me start by saying that my daily workhorse is my Paasche Talon. One day I was watch a video on painting figures and the presenter was using a Sotar 20/20. SO I thought to give it a try. After using this for a couple weeks here is what I have learned. Pros: 1. It is priced middle of the road making it much cheaper than Iawata, Harder and Steinbeck, and Grex. 2. Fairly easy to clean. 3. Good for laying down color coats 4. comfortable in the hand. 5. You can loosen the locking nut and remove the needle without removing the handle. Cons: 1. The plastic parts make it feel cheap compared to other airbrushes. 2. The nozzle is not threaded making it easy to lose. 3. the design has several weaknesses that can damage the airbrush during disassemble and assembly if care is not used. 4. The plastic parts and design weaknesses make other air brushes a better value for the money. For detailed breakdown of my experience with the Sotar, read on. 1. This purchase has left me questioning Badgers Quality Control. This is the second airbrush to cross my hobby bench that did not function out of the box. They both bubbled into the cup. The first, a Badger 200, required the air-cap to be modified so the nozzle was outside the air-cap and not inside it. This one required a thorough cleaning and adjusting before it would work. To me this is a huge disappointment. For the price, I would expect it to work right out of the box. 2. Once working, it does and okay job. When laying down a color coat it worked well. When doing fine detail, it is an average performer. I found it difficult to get really fine lines and to get into areas where detailed work is required. 3. Value: this air-brush is an average value. To begin with, extreme caution must be used when removing the air cap. This is because the nozzle is not threaded onto the body, like Iwata, Grex and others using a similar design. To cut cost, the two parts use a tapered interface to create the seal. So when you remove the cap the nozzle falls onto the floor and is lost. Also care should be taken during assembly because over-tightening can result in a tear in the soft brass of the body causing a serious air leak. Under tightening can also cause a leak, so this can be touchy. The color cup cap is soft plastic. This is a much cheaper part than the metal ones, provided by other brands, but does offer one advantage. It is easier to put on or take off because it is soft and flexible. The metal ones are easier to clean. Finally the plastic piece on the underside, intended to improve ergonomics, is very cheap looking. The part had burrs and rough edges. This part does not appear to have been fully thought out. It feels more like an after thought. Finally when compared to a Paasche Talon for $30 to $40 less in price and works right out of the box, makes the Talon a better value for the money. But as badger air brushes go, it is not a bad performer. If you are a fan of Badger products you will not be disappointed in the performance. Plus the Sotar is a double action airbrush, it works much better than the Badger single action air brushes. Overall, I would give this airbrush a solid C+. ... show more

Great detail airbrush . Spray gunner is a fantastic company to work with. Have purchased another airbrush and lots of supplies from them and I am always impressed with great quality and service . They also often add something extra in the order.

  • Makes it easy to look like a pro!
Style Name: Airbrush
Over the last few years, I have traded up from my Badger Anthem, to a Badger Patriot 105, and then a Badger Krome airbrush for painting my 1/35th scale model armor. I love all three, but never was able to develop the skill to free hand camouflage patterns reliably with my Krome. After seeing several youtube wideos, I decided to try the Badger Sotar 2020-2F when it was available on Amazon for a price ($69.89) less than I had paid for either of my Patriots or my Krome. As soon as I took it out of the box, I was hooked. It is much lighter and shorter than my Krome and feels like a pen in my hands and, just like a pen, I was easily able to sketch in patterns. After about 20 minutes of practice, I took on a three color schemed Syrian T-55 which turned out perfectly. I was amazed and very pleased. The lighter weight and the shorter nose of the Sotar compared to my Krome allowed me to use the full potential this fine instrument offered. The trigger movement is silky smooth and the small cup is perfect for what I need it to hold. The needle is very sharp and I would recommend using the included forked spray regulator to protect it from getting too close to the model surface. For protection, I also store my Sotar with the needle slightly retracted; a piece of cake with the ability to loosen the chuck and pull the needle back from the rear without removing the handle. It cleans as easily as my Patriots or my Krome. My only quibbles are the relatively flimsy carboard box that it comes in compared to the standard Badger hard plastic clamshell and the shorter nose may not fit most cleaning pots / airbrush holders so you may need to add an airbrush holder to your work top. Fortunately, the gravity feed airbrush holder on my Badger TC 910 compressor works fine. I highly recommend the Sotar 2020-F to any scale modeller looking for a superb detail airbrush at a stunningly low price. ... show more

  • Not as expected - un-usable out of the box.... had to adjust it
Style Name: Airbrush
Needle is too tight and does not move fluidly and wouldn’t seal properly letting paint and cleaner to keep spraying out. The needle was so tight that I was not even able to remove it to see if I could fix the issue. I could also feel a grind in the trigger area as I attempted to pull back – not smooth action at all. I never got to the point of being able to use it to get a better idea of how well it worked. I have a couple other Badgers – both Krome’s and I love them. The trigger action is smooth and clean and it was a good twenty dollars cheaper. The Sotar is supposed to be Badgers top gun – and I really don’t feel it is any more… It feels cheapened down from what it once was. If you are thinking of giving Badger a go – try a Krome over the Sotar. Update: After brainstorming I finally got the needle out of the airbrush. The main challenge was a needed adjustment with the needle glide. I have no clue what Badger calls it - but it’s the Teflon ring that the needle travels through and seals the cup from the main body of the brush. After I adjusted that - loosening it up with a small screwdriver - I was able to get the needle to seal and run smoothly. It's still a bit clunky for this brush - but it’s a good brush for the price point. I still have two major complaints about it - the first is that I should not have to make an adjustment right out of the box. And this is a major one that if you are new to the airbrush you would not know what to do. It's like buying brand new car and then having to immediately take it in for a front-end alinement. I really think it's unfair for the company selling airbrush as well as those buying it.... It could be avoided. This brings me to the 2nd part of this - and that’s testing and Quality Control. The instruction state that ALL their airbrushes get tested before being sent out. I highly doubt this as - the needle would not move freely - so I don't see how it was really tested. I had to really work to get the needle to release. If it was tested - why - WHY - would you send this out the door for a customer without readjusting the Teflon needle baring? That looks bad on the company. Overall – Badger has good airbrushes for the price. I do have them in my collection and I DO use and enjoy them – but you may have to fiddle with it to get it to work right for you. ... show more
