We purchased this swim vest for our 2 year old granddaughter. The first time she wore it, she kept leaning forward or rolling over to one side or the other. So, someone had to assist her the entire time she was in the pool. We thought that maybe the float inserts were not appropriate for her. However, the second time she wore it, she wanted to swim by herself, so we let her go. Much to our surprise, she took off and kept herself upright. Lesson-give them time. So first, important to know what this is not. Nothing on the packaging or description suggests that this is a USCG approved lifesaving/floatation device approved for boating. So that's not why I bought it. I bought it to keep my 1 year old safe in our local pool and a small lake (that has an artificial "beach") near our home. For those purposes, it's fantastic. I looked at several vests to find one that would fit, and ordered him this in small. (He's currently about 31 inches and >25 lbs). It would probably fit any child over 10 months, as long as they were in at least the 50th percentile for size. Of course, you have to supervise your child, but it helps keep your child afloat (and give you something to grab) when helping them learn to float or kick, but you can still "blow bubbles" in the water, since there is nothing around the head/neck for floatation, only around the chest/waist. In other words, it will help keep your child buoyant, but will not keep face/head above water without effort or assistance. Because I want him learning to use his arms and legs in the water, I did not want sleeves or "swimmies" on his arms. The material and construction are great. Strong zippers and the leg/crotch clip requires you to push a safety button before it will release. (This is great for anyone with children who have already learned how to use buckles.) It stays fairly secure, and the floats are removable as your child grows and their skill increases. If you're looking for a flotation vest that will help you start your little one learning to swim and keep their arms free (which puddle jumper-type vests do not), this is the vest for you. My daughters are happy to wear this vest while swimming but also while they are playing in the sand. They go back and forth so much it so much easier that they will keep it on the whole time. It also gives me such peace of mind to know that they have it on the whole time we are around water. I love that the floatation assistance is adjustable. I took out floats for both of my girls but more for my older one so she is forced to utilize the skills that she is learning in swim lessons. I do feel that the vests run a bit on the big side. When this arrived, it was clear that it was a previous return due to scuffing and signs of wear.. which was annoying. But, we tried it out and I’m happy we did! My toddler uses a coast guard approved jacket for big stuff like boat rides, but she hates swimming in them. So, this is the perfect addition to swimming when she’s right next to mom or dad. She doesn’t mind wearing it, it keeps her afloat, and it fits her great! Im happy with the purchase & to continue using for future kiddos!
