  • Jack of all trades, master of none?
Model: AK-E1
It took me so long to check out this little mixer after receiving it that I had forgotten that it came with so many features. So when I plugged in a USB flash disk to test out its MP3 playback, I was surprised to hear a female voice talk to me and say "Bluetooth ready to connect" since I didn't remember it supported BT connections. I switched to testing the BT feature at that point, which worked effortlessly. Indeed, this 4 channel mixer comes with a built-in amp, a simple effects loop, 2 wireless microphones with rechargeable batteries, XLR and TRS inputs, stereo RCA and TRS outputs, plus PC connectivity (both for playback and recording). You can also record directly to a flash disk via the same USB port. All of that comes in a size not much bigger than a thick hardcover book. I'm inclined to call it a "jack of all trades" type of machine, yet unfortunately it also seems to follow the next part of this old saying that goes "yet master of none"... The wireless connection for the microphones are good enough, there's no crossover or unwanted reception elements. Both mikes are routed through channel one, which allows you to use channel 2 for a third (wired) one or an instrument cable if needed. Channels 3 and 4 are for line inputs or an RCA connection. (I believe when you're using MP3 or Bluetooth sources, they also go through Channels 3+4.) You can use built-in Reverb & Delay effects for one or more channels and adjust the effect levels (though not individually). Effects can also apply to the external MP3 sources. There's a small LED screen that helps select between MP3/BT/etc. modes, and Play/Stop/Next/Rewind buttons for the MP3 player. OK, but how does it sound? Well, that's where the "master of none" thing gets in the picture. First, this is strictly a P.A. mixer, so don't get your hopes up for high fidelity. In my experience, both the inputs and the external music sounded kind of "muddy", but this is quite subjective and it may highly depend on the quality of the speaker you're using. (It's also possible that the main output is cleaner than the speaker outs, but I haven't tested this.) The output power also doesn't feel anything like 350 watts (or I would have clipped my 100W speakers during testing). So, my suggestion is to go for this mixer if portability and the wireless microphones are a requirement for your use case. Even though the power feels less than advertised, it's good enough to satisfy something like a Starbucks-size room. Since the power requirement for this is only 15-20V DC at 3 amperes, you might even be able to feed it from a portable power source. However, if you're looking for something that's more clean and music oriented, you might want to go for something with less bells and whistles and without a built-in amplifier. ... show more

Model: CX400-1
This is an item and product type I don't have much knowledge about, so it is a real challenge to review. The price isn't unreasonable compared to other comparable devices. How well it stacks up performance wise I do not have a clue. This whole arena of sound recording, production, etc. is virgin territory to me, I'm just now delving into doing things where it is relevant to the process so I'm still well into the learning curve. It is definitely a well-made device, or so it seems - it's got more heft to it than it looks like it should, and that is usually a pretty good sign. We're working on getting the grandkids set up with musical instruments and part of the thought process is that if they can also do at least a small bit of recording and such it may help to get and keep them interested in it more thoroughly. We aren't forcing any of it on them, we're just paying attention to the things they've asked for and/or expressed interest it. This unit and some of the other equipment I've gotten for them should all interphase together, providing I'm on the right track with what bit of research I've put into it so far. About all I can really say beyond that is, I plugged it all in and hooked it up and it functioned as it seems like it ought to. ... show more

  • Two in one system
Model: AK-E1
The best of two worlds. For those who don't always need or use a mic, this is a good solution. I normally do gigs where I am just play music or a pre-set program. Every now and then we get a customer wants or needs to speak over the crowd or pass a message on. But lately I've been getting a few Karaoke jobs. This Mixer/Mic set comes in handy. I have to say that I like the option to be able to connect other items via Bluetooth. I also like that the batteries are rechargeable on the mics. These batteries are also standard and are easy to find extras. I now carry two extra set with a charging block. Another option that I like has to with the USB port. It allows pre-set programs to be played with little effort. Overall, This little set really comes in handy and is worth a look if you need something simple to run. ... show more

  • Simple mixer for blending inputs to my home office speakers
Model: CX400-1
I had a small mixer from another maker set up to take inputs from my MacBook's audio out and from my television's audio out, to send both signals to the speakers in my home office. But I sometimes ran into a buzz or a hum, probably a ground-loop issue of some sort. I guessed that taking one power supply out of the setup I might minimize that. I was right. This little guy runs without any need for power. It's just a simple series of pots to control up to four audio signals in to a single out. It seems to get the job done. The only thing I've noticed is an occasional crackle/rumble when turning the pots, but that seems to have subsided with use. And, really, I'm not turning those much once it's set up anyway. The only thing I'd change if I could would be to have some 1/8-inch inputs. This unit only takes RCA jacks on the in and out, so I've got to run a RCA-to-1/8 adaptor to get the audio out from my Mac. ... show more

  • Very small footprint. No power cord needed. Play multiple devices
Model: CX400-1
This is great for hooking up multiple devices to your amplifier's AUX input. Let me explain. You can play the audio from your phone or tablet on your main sound system using your amplifier's AUX input. Using cables that go from a mini jack to an RCA jack, connect your devices to an input channel on this device. Then route the output from the mini mixer to you to AUX input on your amp. You can blend multiple inputs simultaneously or simply use one at a time. ... show more
