  • Indispensable reference
I came across my ex-library copy at a thrift store, so I've never seen the dust jacket and I've had to put up with some wear and library stamps... Nevertheless, this is still an impressive book from the early 1970s, when "historic preservation" was just beginning to get some traction in the United States. It fully deserves to be reprinted, and failing that, should at least be described in forums like this so that prospective readers can appreciate what it offers. This big and heavy book contains what amount to a series of scholarly articles, each written by a different author. Unavoidably, this results in some differences in style and emphasis, but the editor has done a fine job in maintaining the book's focus. Without exception, the experts who contributed to this work obviously led their field in the middle of the 20th Century. The text is very well illustrated with sketches, line drawings and photographs, many in excellent color and of a size - up to 21cm x 26cm - "suitable for framing". FYI, the major contents are as follows: I. Early Wood Building; The Results of Prehistoric and Archaeological Research II. Wood Building in Northern Europe; Log-building, Stave-churches, Middle-class Houses and Manor-houses III. Wood Building in the British Isles; Medieval Halls, Timber-framing in Town and Country IV. Wood Building in the Netherlands; Churches, Houses and Windmills V. Wood Building in France; Timber-framed Buildings, Churches, Charnel-houses and Chalets VI. Wood Building in Central Europe; Timber-framing in Germany, Wooden Buildings in the Austrian and Swiss Alps VII. Wood Building in Eastern and South-eastern Europe; Log-building in Villages, Towns, Churches, Mosques and Palaces VIII. Wood Building in Italy; The Traditions of Antiquity, Military Buildings, Bridges, Roof-frames and Interiors IX. Wood Building in North America; Colonists' Farms, Buildings in Colonial Towns, Churches, Country-houses While a serious student of architecture would be wise to reflect on more modern studies in the field of historic preservation and traditional wood construction, this book still serves as a splendid overview and survey of principally European building traditions. It is a pity that it's long out of print; I would personally love to carry an e-copy on a large Xoom or iPad tablet on my next trip to Europe! ... show more
