  • Best smartwatch, bar none. Now bigger, brighter, and tougher.
My first Apple watch, a Gen 5, was a surprise birthday gift from my family. It wasn't something I was thinking about, as I've been a fan of analog, solar-powered watches for years. And I didn't care for the way the early Apple watches went dark when you weren't looking at them, nor the need to charge a battery every day. But I loved that Apple watch (still do, my wife now wears it happily). I found it incredibly handy, especially after moving to work-from-home due to the pandemic -- picking up phone calls and keeping up with Outlook tasks is huge. AND, weirdly, the pesky "activity rings" encouraged me to get back into an exercise routine (just to shut them up) and I lost weight that had been bothering me for years. As a result, I've really gotten involved in the Apple health environment, linking my scale and tracking my various measurements. It's been a great motivator to keep improving my physical shape. So, why the big, expensive Ultra? We do like to get outdoors (kayaking and nature photography here in Florida) so I've got a use for a durable, GPS-enabled device. And that Gen 5 was a little small for my maturing eyes. This watch handles all of that, and offers even more health data (Blood O2, etc.). And it hasn't disappointed. Likes Looks -- important in a watch. I'm not a huge guy, but all this "It's too BIG" hullabaloo is nonsense. It looks terrific on my wrist and is just as comfortable to wear as the smaller Gen 5 watch (thank you, titanium/ceramic construction). Productivity -- It would be hard to go back to having to check my phone for calendar reminders, weather activity updates, etc. And even without a paid cell plan, the Ultra of course lets you answer calls on your wrist so long as your phone is nearby. It's a great help in a work-from-home environment. So many complications! The larger face on the Ultra 2 allows more complications, in a more readable fashion, and the Ultra-specific watch faces show them off to great effect. I don't know if I need to know my altitude, compass heading, number of steps, outside temp, day, date, time, battery status, and upcoming Outlook tasks all at once, but I really enjoy having that ability now. Outdoors I've used the Ultra for exercise tracking (works great, of course) and it's had no trouble banging around the yard, but so far no nautical outings or hikes to test the backtrack or other GPS features to track distance (and keep you from getting lost!). But I'm sure glad to have them. Battery I mean, more would be better, but my Gen 5 was running out of juice after about 15 hours, and the Ultra 2 is generally in the 70-80% range after the same period. I still charge it every night, but I don't worry about it giving up before then as I was starting to have to do. Not So Likes None really so far. Okay, paying iPhone money for a watch is a lot. But to be fair, it's not hard to spend what the Ultra 2 costs on either a fancy outdoors watch like a Fenix/Garmin, or a more traditional high-tech watch like a Citizen, or a really nice looking watch from whomever. To me, this one covers it all. Attractive titanium case, Sapphire crystal, water resistant enough for diving; tough enough to take out boating or hiking, all in a multi-billion-transistor wrist computer with dozens of customizable watch faces, a compass, altimeter, depth gauge, heart monitor, blood oxygen sensor, sleep and exercise tracker, appointment reminder, music player and wrist telephone. Phew. And yes, it tells time, more accurately than a $200,000 Rolex that can't access the Internet. And it doesn't need to be reset twice a year for Daylight Savings Time. I wish the Apple bands were more plentiful and less expensive. I got the comfy Trail Loop, but it would be nice to have the Ocean too without paying another $99. But I've been wearing my existing silicone sport bands most of the time (large Gen 5-up bands fit perfectly) and Amazon has a staggering number of Ultra-compatible watch bands available (picked up a really nice SS mesh band for business outings for $27 and a leather one for about the same). Bottom line If you have an iPhone, an Apple smartwatch is a no-brainer. Yes, it's another thing to charge at night, but you're already doing that. And it is almost odd how handy it is having so much information available on your wrist -- once you have it, you won't want to be without it. I also think the exercise integrations are huge, whether you're a hardcore gym rat, or just need to make sure you didn't sit in a chair all day -- being able to track your improvements is a great motivator. It's been a game changer for me. I literally exercise in part to watch my "numbers" improve. Weird, but true. As for the Ultra -- the name's a bit much, and the price is steep, but if you want MORE of what Apple smart watches can do, in a bigger, more attractive, sturdier, more capable package, this is a great piece of gear. I couldn't be more pleased. Five big, smart stars. ... show more

  • The Apple Watch Ultra is a great gadget without which I dont want to be.
I bought my watch in black friday 2022 just a couple months after being diagnosed with sleep apnea, after spending most of that year thinking I was dying because I was so tired. I wanted to track my sleep and decided to get the Apple Watch SE, the cheapest option that is almost perfect as a sleep tracker device, but when I saw the Ultra, I was hooked. I ended up buying it and it has been a great purchase. I am tracking my activity and have become more active thanks to it. I have been able to correlate sleep quality with certain practices, improving my sleep drastically and with it my overall health, and this cannot be understated. How does it help? Well, being reminded all the time about your activity levels brings a level of awareness that without a tracker you simply dont have. And it is one of those things in place helping you fight what is now and will be in the years to come the top killer and cause of pain and suffering in humanity: sedentary lifestyle. I have kept incorporating good practices to my life and even when I still dont have many physical results to show (still overweight), many facets of my life have improved. The watch didnt do that directly but I am constantly reminded of the need to take action and keep improving. Even its measure of VO2 max, the best predictor of sudden death and longevity there is, is something that will be a help in the tough process of changing bad habits and creating new ones. The Apple Watch could be one of the best ROI investments you can make if it happens to be an important tool in creating change in people as I think it has been to me. Now the looks: I am a big guy. 6'3" and 320 pounds. The watch doesnt look massive on me as it does to many people, but doesnt look tiny as other alternatives. I like its looks on me. Battery life is awesome. One of the reasons why I never bought an apple watch before was because I dont feel like charging a watch every day and more than once a day. The almost 3 days battery life was a huge deciding factor to me (I also got a 25% cash back with my credit card). The battery is still rocking almost 18 months later. I understand most functions in the watch are available with cheaper models of the Apple Watch, but you dont get the rugged and nice looks and the battery life. Just those two things make me recommend the Ultra to anyone looking for a watch and a tool that will no doubt help you improve your health if you are decided to do it. ... show more

  • This is a big watch.
Color: Titanium Case with Blue Ocean Band Size: One size - fits 130-200mm wrists Configuration: Without AppleCare+
This thing gets really bright and lasts like 2 days. The watch is very big and it has this really cool action button, and for myself who works at night at my job which is outdoors, if I ever am in a place with no lighting I can quickly just press the button and it will illuminate the entire room thanks to the insane amount of nits the screen can get to. I would say it has good value for your money, you get quality materials and different types of bands. For this ocean band, it is very uncomfortable and leaves groove lines on your wrist even if you have it too tight. But you know, I did get used to it but I wish I went with a different band that wasn’t this silicone one (I just really liked the look of it and I hate anything water). It charges very fast and it comes with a braided charging cable but no block. It’s very easy to use just like any Apple Watch, I’ve had Apple Watches in the past (series 3 and 5, and 7) and I’ve noticed that this one is significantly better with snappiness and efficiency. (Not like it really matters because a watch tells time regardless. But if you’re someone who does a lot of exercises or uses your watch instead of a phone, then it’s always good to have that extra speed because you won’t be waiting as long for something like maps to load.) This is a very pretty watch, but remember this thing was built for the intention of adventure, so it isn’t gonna look sleek like your typical Apple Watch or Apple device, such as the normal series, this thing has rugged edges, the screen is the slightest bit lower then the watch itself, with almost like a wall around the screen to protect it from scratches. I work as a server at a restaurant, which I consider that an adventure. This watch has been hit by cups, probably drowned, ice thrown at it, maybe some sort of mystery sauce on it. No clue. But it still looks great and it has a few scratches. Because of its rugged and adventurous look, the scratches add character to it. ... show more

  • Love it!
When it comes to apple products and communication with in that ecosystem, this watch is a great addition. I recently got rid of my apple watch because I got rid of my iPhone for a Samsung Galaxy due to being a nerd and needing those extra phone and customization features but that's not what we are here for. This watch is a great addition not only because it does what the other watches do but because if the additional features it adds. It's durable, it's sturdy, it's not as heavy as you think, it's just right. When it comes to the price I don't think the extra features are worth the money but aye, you stand out from the rest. When it comes to performance it's top of the line with the GPS and cellular features. It communicate well with all your apple products which make things seamless. I would buy it again if I went back to apple but, I just got my Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra replacement. I still like the Apple Watch Ultra 2 slightly better. Also, you can get different watch bands to go with your watch which make the physical appearance and comfort level go up with ease. Like I said it's top of the line and easy to set up. Too bad I'm no long in that ecosystem. But, buy it especially if you can get it during a sale. Excited to see what apple does in the future with these devices. ... show more

  • Excellent backup dive computer
As the second iteration of the Apple Watch Ultra, most of the capabilities in the watch are well-known at this point. It's chunky, but high-tech. If you're in the Apple ecosystem, it's an amazing way to get alerts, unlocks your Macbook since it stays authenticated as long as it's touching your skin and can be an auth token, and measure non-medical-grade health metrics. The battery life is great. Many days the battery only drops 10-20% for a full 12 hours use. I use it to ping my misplaced iPhone in the sofa cushions all the time. The biggest reason for me getting the Ultra 2 vs. the non-Ultra Apple Watches is to use it as a SCUBA backup. computer. It's accurate on depth and temperature as compared to my Suunto Eon Steel. The screen is bright and easy to read. Things like haptic safety stops is a nice feature. I do hope they offer air integration in the future. I'm very happy with my Ultra 2. It's a daily wear item for me for casual dress and business casual. I wouldn't wear it with dresses and heels, but I don't have reasons to dress up much. ... show more

  • Great upgrade over my Apple Watch 6
I have been eyeballing this watch since its Gen 1 release. I finally pulled the trigger when the rumors started that Apple might have to pull them off the shelf due to a patent infringement lawsuit. All of a sudden the prices dropped and I knew I had to buy it. The jury is still out on the band. Don’t get me wrong, love the look and the fit. The problem is I run a lot, and the cloth band can get rather gross after several miles of running. So far I have been able to keep it pretty clean just by hand washing it, and several videos suggest you can throw it I the wash as long as you put it in a garment bag. Plus, worse case is I buy a different band, like one of the Nike rubber ones. I love the battery life. Even with super heavy use I get a good 48ish hours between charges. Now I can use my watch to track my sleep at night. Charging is also pretty fast as long as you use a 5v charger. Typical charge time seems to be around 30min if I am at 25% battery. The titanium case is also a marked improvement. Even though it’s much larger physically than my old Apple Watch 6 it feels way lighter. And I have banged mine around a bit at the gym and on the road and it still has no noticeable scratches at all in the case or glass. ... show more

  • This is an incredible watch
Color: Titanium Case with Blue Ocean Band Size: One size - fits 130-200mm wrists Configuration: Without AppleCare+
After about 9 months of evaluating which smart watch I wanted, the final decision was the Apple Watch Ultra 2. The competition was the Garmin 75 Pro, a very fine watch but it's a hardcore sports watch. I am not that level of athlete, so I chose the Ultra 2. I love the watch because of its many functions including phone service that does not require your iPhone to make and receive calls. It's the real Dick Tracey phone from my childhood. It's interface with the iPhone is the main reason in my selection and I was not disappointed. I am very happy with my purchase. For apps there is a choice between icons and list. The icons fill about 3 screens which you can control using touch screen or you can use a list mode for more description. You can instantly toggle between the two. The screen is large, but the watch is lightweight, and is very comfortable to wear. Charging has not been an issue, it's fast and easy. ... show more

  • Good watch.
This is the version I searched for where I can still get the Oxygen reading. It’s very functional but takes time and stillness to monitor. The rest of the watch is what you would expect from Apple. It’s expensive but good value. No scratches and charges fast with the included charger. It looks great and I match it with different bands also bought on Amazon. The watch doesn’t weigh much more given the larger size. ... show more
