API solution architecture explains the components and their relations within the software solution. API architecture may refer to the technical architecture of the API platform. When building, running and exposing not only one, but several APIs, it becomes clear that certain building blocks of the API, runtime functionality and management functionality for the API need to be used over and over again. An API platform provides an infrastructure for developing, running and managing APIs. API architecture may refer to the architecture of the API portfolio. The API portfolio contains all APIs of the enterprise and needs to be managed like a product. API portfolio architecture analyzes the functionality of the API and organizes, manages and reuses the APIs. API architecture may refer to the design decisions for a particular API proxy. To document the design decisions, API description languages are used. We explain the use of API description languages (RAML and Swagger) on many examples. This book covers all of the above perspectives on API architecture. However, to become useful, the architecture needs to be put into practice. This is why this book covers an API methodology for design and development. An API methodology provides practical guidelines for putting API architecture into practice. It explains how to develop an API architecture into an API that consumers love. A lot of the information on APIs is available on the web. Most of it is published by vendors of API products. I am always a bit suspicious of technical information pushed by product vendors. This book is different. In this book, a product-independent view on API architecture is presented. You could think of the volumes in this series as sections in a large API Programming book. This mini-book is the Overview section. It discusses API design methods and tools in an abstract way. There is little in the way of concrete direction, so readers who want to know exactly what to do might feel unsatisfied. I bought this book along with the companion by the same author, RESTful API Design (API-University Series) (Volume 3). I was disappointed to find out that API Design includes much of the same content of this book verbatim. Getting both books is a waste. I suggest just getting API Design if you are into these books. I guess I should have looked at the table of contents more carefully. Would like to return it but already creased the spine. ... show more

Great book for all: Executives, Managers, Architects and Analysts . It is straight to the point. This is very knowledgeable author who translates in very simple terms very complex technical information.

I give this 3 stars because 1. It has no worked example APIs at all. All theory. 2. Feels like an extract from a PhD thesis, not a book. 3. It doesn't mention the role of HATEOAS in API architecture. 4. It does intelligently breakdown an API Architecture into the Development, Runtime and Engagement platforms. This is a good idea. 5. It actually mentions somewhere that an externally facing API is ultimately a company's product. This is an advanced concept for non-technical people. Otherwise, it's a good basic overview of API Architecture, but that's all. ... show more
