A larger instrument will hinder the student’s ability to play properly. The deciding factor is if the student is able to, or very close to, playing the 4th finger. • Blown away
Size: 4/4 (Full Size)
This is the first "legit" instrument purchase I've done online. I started taking lessons and wanted to stop renting, and my instructor said I should "never by an instrument without hearing it first". There are several violin shops within an hour of me, however they were fairly expensive, and I didn't really feel like walking into a violin store and fumbling around. I did a lot of looking around and came across a couple different places, but Kennedy Violins stuck out mostly because of lots of high ratings, quite a few videos on YouTube going over all the details of the instruments, and the price range was right. So, I decided to risk it and spring for this instrument. When I received the package, I was really surprised by the quality of the items I received. I got a nice wooden Portland shoulder rest, decent bow, and decent rosin. Also packed in was an electronic tuner, a microfiber cloth, a complete spare set of Portland Prelude strings, and a clear plastic tube for holding extra strings. The case feels really nice too - oblong shape, pretty much exactly as the picture; black interior with space for 4 bows, two large compartments and one small, the two large ones having elastics to keep them shut, and each compartment has a metal prong to grab such that you can easily open it. The foam is covered with nice fabric and is nicely shaped so the instrument doesn't move a whole lot. The two things I like most about the case are the magnetic fasteners on the front and the size of the top pocket. Magnetic fasteners are far more convenient for quick access if I'm just keeping it on the floor ready for use every day, and the top zipper compartment is large enough where I can shove in fairly large music books and notes, etc. that I can't usually fit into the top zipper compartments on some other cases. Also included were a couple of quick start guides - a two-sided sheet on basic maintenance and care, and a booklet to get you started playing if you are brand new: it covers notes, finger positions, and has some basic songs to get you started. And let's not forget the trademark candy pieces that I quickly ate. My instructor asked where I had gotten this instrument from, and I told him I'd tell him after he tried it out. He played around with it a bit while I mentioned I noticed this violin was significantly lighter than the one I was renting as well as noticeably louder. He looked at it a bit and noted that it didn't take a lot of pressure to press down on the strings, which I agreed with, and he also noted there was a little more action on my strings than his. I told him where I got it from and he asked how much I paid, and we both agreed that this was a hell of a deal for what it came with. The only difference I noticed between the one I received and the picture is mine has a one-piece back, which I'm quite alright with. Bottom line is I feel like I got more than I paid for, and I'm extremely happy with the quality of the items I got, especially the instrument itself - very solid construction, good accessories, and it sounds great. If someone were to ask me for a recommendation on where to go, I would easily say Kennedy Violins, despite them being (apparently) a mostly online shop. ... show more

  • Absolutely Blown Away
Size: 4/4 (Full Size)
About a month ago I decided to try the violin after wanting to play for over a decade. To test the waters, I purchased a Cecilio CVN-300. While it was on the way, I rented a viola from a local music store (they were out of violins). I also ordered a Yamaha YSV-104 electric violin. I was trying to see and research what makes a quality violin and what qualities would help me bond with the instrument. The Cecilio, while "functional" at first, broke two weeks after I got it. With minimal pressure, the tuning peg snapped right in half. It was too late when I found the Kennedy Violins YouTube channel and watched "Student Violin Comparisons". I definitely felt silly. I was not unhappy with my Yamaha YSV-104. It is a good instrument. I just didn't bond with it. In truth, I kept coming back to the viola, because it is high quality and rich in tone. I looked deeper into Kennedy Violins due to stellar Amazon reviews, the amount of information on their products, and how they attempt to educate newer players via their videos of the dos and don'ts of the violin. I learned invaluable lessons. During this, I found the Louis Carpini. I liked the way it looked, and I liked its tone in KV's videos playing it. I felt safe and confident enough to take the dive. I can say that it is probably the best violin purchase I could have made, especially at this price point. I spent an entire month, hours at a time, exploring my options. So much work has gone into the setup of the violin (ultra important), and this attention to detail was consistent on the entire outfit. The violin itself is extremely beautiful. Mine has a reddish tint, and its cut of maple has the very nice holographic-effect on the back you get from high quality wood. The sides, although not flamed, have that same effect. As for the tone, it is difficult to describe through text alone, but it is very rich and not too bright. When people say it is "even across the registers", they are telling the truth. Overall, I am so happy about my purchase. It is also nice to know I will be able to trade it in for credit towards my next violin when I progress further in my playing. I felt inclined to leave a review because in my research, information on string instruments is not easy to find and the violin market is not very easy to understand. I would have very much liked to skip all the confusion and mistakes and have started with KV in the first place. I hope this review helps anyone who is confused like I was. ... show more

  • So beautiful both physically and musically
Size: 1/2
I ordered the 1/2 violin for my son back in April. It is a lovely instrument and it has a beautiful tone. This violin was worth every penny and then some. It allows for him to develop his musicality in a way cheaper sounding instruments simply can't. This instrument truly has a rich, clear sound, which is amazing for a smaller sized violin. The case is sturdy and has two compartments, one that is perfect for holding his shoulder rest, and the other his tuner, rosin, and cloth. The top of the case unzips and he can carry his music in it. I really like the straps that let him carry the case on his back like a backpack. The real wood bow is a very nice part of this package. I love the quality. It also came with a nice tuner and some extra strings. This package didn't include a shoulder rest, so I ordered one from Kennedy separately. It fits perfectly in the case. The violin came well packaged and it shipped to my house within a few days of ordering. Kennedy is a superb company to work with. They are responsive and helpful. I really feel like I got tremendous value in this package and will be ordering again from this company in the future. ... show more

  • Overall Good, Issue with Varnish and Chin Rest *Update at Bottom*
Size: 4/4 (Full Size)
I bought this violin because I saw a lit of reviews stating that it is a great middle grade beginner violin. I am a +30yo self learner that wanted to try a better violin after I tested a $100 package deal and am now committed to learning to play. Overall the violin is nice. I went to change the chin rest from the one it came with to the one that I like and the cork was all the way thru the varnish. I contacted Kennedy Violins with the issue and supplied pictures. Their response was "this is normal, just remove the cork with your fingernail or sand paper". Well I used my fingernail and when I got all the cork off I noticed that there was no varnish there. Did some research and it seems there are a lot of people that has had this problem with Kennedy Violins. The chin rest was applied before the varnish dried completely. Overall the violin sounds nice. I understand that a $600ish violin is little to a company but the sheer amount of posts I read with violins ranging up to $1200 with this problem from Kennedy Violins is a concern for me. I am disappointed that the response was "it is normal" when my original violin (which was very cheap) did not have any problems such as this, even tho the chin rest was on since before the Kennedy Violin was even made. *Update 20181102* After writing my original review, Katie Lubiens contacted me from Kennedy Violins. She asked me about my violin and wanted to address my concerns. I gave her my experience and specifically said that I did not expect anything due to my physical location, the violin still sounds nice, and the fact that my violin did not cost three goats and my 1st born. She responded with an offer to send me a replacement violin without a chin rest installed so I may install mine with no worries. She made the arrangements and shipped me a beautiful instrument. The last two pictures are of the replacement violin. From my point of view, Kennedy Violins' customer service went more than the extra mile for me. When I advance to the point that I should upgrade my violin again, I will be purchasing one from them. ... show more

  • Great sounding instrument, quality materials, professional set-up, and a lifetime warranty
Size: 4/4 (Full Size)
I spent a considerable amount of time researching my purchase and the Louis Carpini G2 arrived exactly as advertised. I have a very particular ear when it comes to violins and the numerous demonstration videos and product presentations on the Kennedy Violins YouTube channel made it very easy for me to put on a set of high-quality headphones and listen to all the subtitle variations between the many outstanding violins offered by Kennedy Violins. The instrument was set-up and nearly ready to play. The bridge and sound post were positioned correctly, the string height is perfect , and the instrument only required a few minutes of fine tuning due to the long journey to my house in Southeast Asia (Portland, OR to San Antonio, TX, and finally to Korea, 10,000 miles total distance). The instrument made the trip with no problems due to great packaging and a quality case. I would absolutely recommend this company and their line of instruments to anyone looking to purchase a violin. If I was in the states, I probably would have rented the Franke Henner violin from the Kennedy Violins website and had the option to apply up to $429 in credit towards the purchase of the violin in 12 months or upgraded to something like a Anton Gerard. So in a nutshell, it is a great sounding violin, great service, and last but not least, a lifetime warranty (I haven't seen another company that offers one). I feel great about this purchase and I'm so glad that I decided to move past my previous VSO (Violin Shaped Object) that was holding me back. Call me weird, I have to admire my Louis Carpini G2 and touch it before I leave for work. I love it. I had only two small regrets. I wish that I was that I was unable to hear the Louis Carpini G2 with Dominant Strings and was unable to purchase the instrument with the upgraded strings on Amazon (Although, you can purchase the Violin with upgraded strings from the Kennedy website if you desire). ... show more

  • Amazing instrument and customer service!
Size: 4/4 (Full Size)
I played violin for the first time when I was in 6th grade. I loved playing that year, but due to moving a bunch as a kid and other reasons, I was not able to play again. Now I'm 42 and have decided to learn how to play again. I started out renting a violin from a local shop. It was a nice one, but I ended up using my my equity from the past year to get a violin for my 9 year old son who will soon be taking lessons. That left me without a violin. I had seen Kennedy Violins on Amazon, checked them out online, and have heard nothing but good things about them. I decided to give it a shot. I have to say that I am thoroughly impressed with the beauty of this instrument and even more impressed by the sound! For a beginner's instrument, I have zero complaints about it. The case is extremely sturdy nice. I love all of the stuff that it comes with too. I don't know much about the competition that's out there, but I am very happy with my purchase. And I have to jump on the "awesome customer service" bandwagon as well. Because I bought this on Amazon, I didn't have the option to select different colors for the inside of the case. I chatted with Amy from their Customer Service team and she agreed to swap cases out with me. I paid shipping to her and they paid for it back. No complaints here! All in all, I feel that I got a tremendous deal! I am looking forward to playing this instrument while I start my adult journey back into the world of violin playing. ... show more

  • Questionable Quality and Potential Hazard
Size: 4/4 (Full Size)
While I do like the sound of the violin (for the price) the quality and lifespan of the instrument is questionable. My violin was bought about 18 months ago and everything looked good to me. I thought the $600+ spent on the kit was a good investment. Since then I have played it for about 20 times, sometimes with my other bow that is more expensive and much older - 20+ years in my possession. A few days ago when I took the violin out to play, the bow split up at the tip and broke into 2 pieces while it was tighten. I have played violin for over 20 years. I know how to treat the bow and have never seen anything like this happened to a bow. Considering that the wood of a bow has to be carefully selected and treated to allow it to perform under constant vibration condition, a sudden split up like this is unthinkable and even dangerous. After contacting the customer service at Kennedy, the first response I received from self-declared Shop Manager Zach S. stated: "a bow should either be replaced every year due to the hair wearing out or rehaired. Since these bows aren't really designed to be rehaired often people just replace them for $42.76." This was a big surprise to me because I don't think this one-year life span was mentioned anywhere in the product listing or packaging. Additionally, the potential hazard of a break-off bow tip was completely ignored by Kennedy, from all the communications I've had with them. If this product was indeed made with quality in mind it should have been made to be more reliable than fancy. For example, I'd rather see it made with a better material/craftsmanship than having a mother-of-pearl inlay on the bow. With this experience now I am questioning the quality of the violin and my $600+ investment. Perhaps the whole idea of online music instrument purchase is just unrealistic, especially with Kennedy Violins, where they don't tell you everything you need to know until things happened. I wish them the best, but next time when this happens to someone else they may have more than thy can handle. Rob ... show more
