  • Great Hobby Scope
Changing a watch pin was a cinch under this scope. True, we bought it for our homeschooled middle schoolers to explore their world, but it has around the house uses too. It works well for the kids with simple operation and the capacity for the kids to examine everything from their own fingernail to last night's dinner scraps. The stand is sturdy and the main adjust knob works well. Light from under or over is a plus though we haven't had much use for the under light yet except some cabbage. Eyepieces rotate i and out to accommodate a small child or a wide faced adult. The rubber eye piece sides are not all that useful for us. We like that it can run on batteries or AC. ... show more

  • Good as a first microscope for a child--or for personal use by a scientist
I'm a professional with experience using high end microscopes from Zeiss, Leica, Nikon, and Olympus, some costing several hundred thousand dollars and employing advanced imaging technologies. I purchased this for home use in order to look at various objects found on nature excursions. If you are a parent looking for a microscope for your scientifically inclined kid--or just a curious adult--and are only planning on ever buying one microscope, get this one. It will be a gratifying purchase, much more so than buying a compound binocular microscope (the kind most people imagine when you think of a 'microscope'). Although the latter achieves higher power and is the standard for looking at specimens mounted on slides, they are harder to use, the image quality is always poorer (even on high end devices), samples require preparation, and quite frankly, they just aren't as fun to look through. You won't be able to make out individual cells, single cell organisms, and such, but you will be able to see vivid images of everyday objects, such as seashell pieces in sand or the fibers in a dollar bill, in a way that reveals very unexpected details. And this is a nice little stereo microscope. Very good image quality, adjustable LED illumination (well worth it, in comparison to halogen bulbs which get extremely hot and burn out), compact size, and very easy to use. ... show more

  • A bargain for a hobbyist/amateur scientist!
It's hard to imagine getting more microscope for the money, yet I'm not seeing any evidence that they cut corners in production. This is a fine instrument! I'm the kind of person who likes to get a closer look at things like bugs, cat whiskers, seeds, rocks, fingerprints, etc., but right after I ordered a similar Amscope with a solid pedestal, I realized that this one would be a lot moire useful for things like small soldering jobs and so on, and I was fortunately able to cancel the first one right before they shipped it, so I could order this one. I may build a longer arm for it someday, but right out of the box, the scope part can be turned 180 degrees to use it on larger subjects that are too big to go between the stage and the objective lenses, and it balances pretty well that way. My title implies that this one isn't good enough for someone who's the next level above hobbyist/amateur, but I doubt that's true - it's just that a more "serious" user might be in a position to spend more to get more features. I've been working with various kinds of optics all my life, and this is a seriously good microscope, IMO. ... show more

  • Moderate build quality. Optics are quite cheap, with eyepieces with poor eye relief.
Initial impressions: Moderate build quality. Optics are quite cheap, with eyepieces with poor eye relief. Relatively clear optics otherwise. Very little clearance under the scope, as the scope is much smaller than it seems in the photos. You could spend slightly more to get a much better used vintage dissecting microscope. However, it's probably fine for some applications. ... show more

  • Great Value, Great Quality
Traded up from the AmScope 120 to this this and it is worth every extra cent. This unit is sturdy and steady. The focusing mechanism is well built - the previous models stripped the ratchet when the focus was turned too far. The headpiece can be swiveled for items that can't be clipped to the stage or for another person to view. The lights are excellent and hold a charge for (it seems) forever. The optics are clear and easy to adjust. As you can tell I am delighted with every purchase of this unit. ... show more

  • Was 3 stars...now 1
I am glad I did not pay full price for this but am OK with the quality (meh) for the price. It is definitely dim - a light ring was my next purchase. The field of vision seems very limited compared to the other stereo microscopes I own. -------------- Update: The first time I plugged in this microscope the light was dimmer than I'd expected but solidly on. Second time I plugged it in, the light was flickering. Third time, no illumination. At least I discovered this before my Geology students showed up for class in a couple of weeks. Take your money and invest in a better model. ... show more

  • Excellent microscope for the price!
I purchased this dissecting microscope as a gift for my sister's first grade classroom. I wanted something that would allow her students to examine the world around them while being sturdy enough to weather some rough handling. This scope seems to fit the bill. I'm very happy with the light source as well, which was lacking on some of the cheaper options. ... show more

  • It will open up worlds to the viewer
I am a science lover, and I want to create a similar love in my grandchildren. This scope is easy to use, and allows incredible observation of anything you choose to look at. A dead beetle or wasp is just that until you slip it onto the stage, and then it becomes a thing of wonder and beauty. I wish I had gotten one years ago. Worth every penny and so much more. ... show more
