  • Awesome car.
This car is awesome, more power than I thought. The car zips, handling is sensitive but can be adjusted. My only question is can I find parts in a hobby shop?

  • Fun and easy to drive RC with one slight oversight on design.
ALTAIR Scout Remote Control Car This is the best RC that I own by far. I have so much fun playing with it and the expanded battery is a nice plus. 40 minutes of play time allowed me and my boys to each take turns. although we do wish we have more so we can race each other. that would come with its own challenges as this very fast vehicle and collision is extremely likely with multiple of them. This is the next generation of Scout by Altair. their previous version is 20 minutes of play time. From what I can tell, the only difference is they added a second battery and bridged them together with a combiner(see picture 5) and then strap them together with a Velcro strap. inexpensive way to expand playtime. Construction. Main frame is solid built. parts can be replaced if damage during rough play. which I guarantee it will happen if you want to have fun. It has shocks to absorb up and down terrain motion. Tires are made for rough and smooth terrain. soft yet holds its shape. the main body is just a thin plastic that is held on to the frame via 4 pins. (many backup pins are included) Think of this as a miniature NASCAR vehicle that has a light shell that pins to the frame/engine. Mentioned before it comes with 2 1000 mah battery strapped together. Remote/play control. Very light built. can accommodate left and right hand players. Easy to steer. easy to adjust alignment. speed control via trigger as well as Low and Fast speed. Fast speed is very very quick on flat surface. on smooth surface it is easy to do spins and maneuver around. on rough surface. (about 2 inches of grass and bumps) if you go fast and turn sharply, you will likely flip. but that is part of the fun. you can also use the fast speed on rough terrain because it does slows down the RC a bit. the faster you go, the easier it is to flip. ;-) It handled both terrains beautifully. I decided not to test this on water, because you would not want to submerge this in water as the batteries are exposed in the side. it handle small puddles, but I would stay away as indicated batteries are not encased in waterproof protection. Maintenance. This RC contains many parts that can be replaced with parts from Altair website. about 8-10 per part plus $7 shipping. It can add up over time. but unavoidable because all things will break over time and with all terrain play it will be sooner than later. (NOTE: FLAW) Now to the part that I did not give this a 5 star. the main flaw to me is how the battery is placed. it is entirely exposed to the elements where water/dirt can easily get in and ruin the battery and its connections. Further more. the manual indicates that you need to takeout (disconnect) the battery while not in use. Well. the connection pieces are so tight and so hard to take out. if we were to disconnect the battery after each play, at least make this easy to disconnect while being able to secure it during play. a simple clasp or clip connector would've worked here. as you can see from the last picture. the 2 pins are really really close to each other. you would have the urge to use a flat head screw driver to separate these connectors. BE REALLY CAREFUL as you will likely touch these two metal bars and sparks will fly. The good thing is I think the manufacture can fix this very easily by using different type of connector. maybe on the next version. I really do like this RC and would recommend it with a warning to be careful when disconnecting the battery. ... show more

  • Surprisingly good budget RC
This is my second of these, so I'm just going to repeat much of the same things from my other review as they still stand. The main difference is that this kit comes with an adapter that allows you to hook up the 2nd battery in parallel to increase the run time. I'm not quite sure it justifies the additional cost, but it does make it more convenient to make a single purchase. This is a really nice budget RC and a nice step up from the many similar brushed 1/16 RC vehicles available. This is a rebranded truck made in China. I believe it's a Xinlehong Q903, but sold in the US by Altair Aerial. They did it right by rebranding the packaging and everything under their name instead of just reselling it with the factory packaging like many other resellers do. I also have an Altair camera drone, and their aftermarket support was top notch. I had some questions regarding the drone's app, and the owner responded very quickly. That's a lot nicer than waiting for someone in China to respond. It has a brushless motor with a fully upgraded metal drivetrain -- diff gears, prop shaft, diff drive cups, drive shafts, and ball bearings. I suspect there's a minimal amount of grease in the diffs as both the front and rear have very smooth and free movement. They could benefit from some grease to slow down their action. I'm not sure if the shocks are oil-filled or can be, but both the front and rear could benefit from some additional damping. The rear is pretty bouncy stock, and if I hit a bump like at the front of my driveway, it's enough to bounce the rear up, sending it flipping over. The tires are a bit on the hard side and don't give a lot of traction on the concrete, but they seem to hook up pretty well in dirt and grass. I had to dial down the steering d/r about 60%, because it was just too twitchy at the top speed of this brushless truck. I'd guess top speed to be right around the advertised speed of 32mph. Run time is good enough that I ran it pretty hard for about 20-25 minutes before I had to head inside, and it still had juice. The brushless system is really nice, and it's a lot quieter than the 1/16 brushed systems in my other cars. There wasn't any issue with cogging, and throttle response is pretty good. Low speed requires a bit of finesse, but who really spends their time in that range with something like this? The transmitter is a basic 2ch transmitter with adjustments for steering trim, steering dual rates, steering reverse, and a HI/LO speed selector. The LO speed is probably quite comparable to a brushed system's high speed, so you can slow things down for younger drivers. The wheel is placed a just a bit out of thumb's reach from the grip, so you you like to drive one-handed, you'll probably want to put in another radio system. There are LED driving lights up front and openings in the bumpers for additional LED lights should you wish to add some more. While the RC hobby popularity seems to be trending towards the larger scale 1/8 and up vehicles, I prefer these smaller 1/16 scales as they don't need as much room to run. ... show more
