we adopted our dog when he was 2(ish) and we've had him for four years. he either never had his nails trimmed before we adopted him or he had some serious trauma from having it done earlier in life because he absolutely would not let me or the vet techs at our vets office touch his nails. he'd rather break his arm or pull it out of the socket than let anyone touch them. his nails are black and impossible to see through, to boot. i've tried many different types of clippers, dremels, black top and concrete walks/scratching, scratchboards, etc. and nothing worked. these clippers allow me to take his paws while he's asleep and see where the quick is fast enough that i can get a couple snipped before he truly realizes what's going on. he's gotten so much better about it, it's unreal. i love that these clippers are small enough that my small hands can use them easily, i love the different light options, and i would really like the magnifying nail-catching cover, but i can't use it. it gets so dusty and scratched up from the nails that i have to flip it down. nails still go everywhere and i don't get to use the magnifying feature, but thankfully i'm not in a position where i need that. what i don't like is how bright some of the lights are because they actually do the opposite of what they're meant to - instead of helping me see, i wind up absolutely blinded. when you figure out which light setting works for you, stick with it. i have an accidental habit of clicking the light switch through all of the different options while i'm waiting for the dog to get his shhht together between paws and then i just get blinded all over again (lol). regardless, if you're on the fence about these just give them a shot. with amazon's return policies, you'll be fine. try them, if they suck return them. but i can almost promise that they won't suck. ... show more

These are very nice clippers. My dog's nails grow so fast and they catch on everything. They are very smooth and clip the nail relatively easily. The light is super helpful so I don't clip the nerves. It is harder if their claws are darker. The light switch on it is a little weird, but it at least makes sense.     • Cuts well, lights sometimes work
I wanted this nail clipper to use on my wiggly and fearful Beagle's nails. I have tried literally half a dozen nail clippers, and no one clipper has everything, but clean cutting is a must. This clipper has a "guillotine" blade, which means it doesn't squeeze the nail as much as a bypass blade. It also doesn't make a big CLICK noise like a bypass blade, which can frighten a skittish pet. That's a win. So it DOES cut well, but the lights work only when they want to. I even replaced the batteries ($9!!!) and they are sketchy still. Also I haven't figured out how the cover magnifies the nail in a convenient way. You have to look at the nail from the side, which you can do, but then you lose track of the blade that way. I'll keep working with it to see if I like it any better. ... show more

    • Pretty useless and traumatizing to my cat
I thought this would be a great replacement for the old reliable clippers I’ve used for years and misplaced. I was SO wrong. The product itself is made of cheap plastic and is hard to hold especially with a squirmy cat. Does not work upside down which is the only way I can clip my boys’ nails, they do not like to on their backs or held for nail clipping. The batteries for the lights arrived dead and had to be replaced and when I finally used them in my cat, the apparently already dull blade after NO USES or the terrible engineering of the device shredded my poor cats nails and the splintered remains got stuck in the blade instead of the useless guard. I got three nails done before my cat bit me. Look he hates having his nails trimmed but he NEVER bites and he was visibly flinching from the sound so I can only imagine what kind of pain this thing put him through. Not even bothering to return it, I’m pitching it directly in the trash and will go try to find simple old reliable replacement instead. ... show more

    • They work, but not well!
I’ve had these for about a year, and while they work, I wouldn’t recommend them. Sure the light and “magnification” is handy but the battery compartment will open on its own and the small button batteries will fly out everywhere. I’ve had to put tape over the compartment to prevent this. The item also feels cheap and the blades are not that sharp for a large dog. Bottom line: don’t get ‘em, especially if you have a large dog. ... show more

So my dogs nails are dark brown and extremely hard to see. She also really hates getting her nails cut, but it was so easy to use this and I had no trouble out of her! I had been taking her to the groomers just for a nail cut, but it was $10 everytime. Not including the drive and gas it took to get there. So I thought I would try this out and it works great!! I can’t see her nail quick as well as I’d hoped, but I don’t blame the product. Her nails are just very dark, but this worked wonders!!! It also has a trimming catcher so I didn’t have to clean any up or go on the hunt for them around the house! I would definitely recommend if you have a pup who hates their nails being trimmed and if you like zero mess! ... show more

I am very happy that I purchased this. It helps me keep my kitties nails trim, but it broke when it fell onto the carpet.

    • Cheaply made
I opened the package with this nail clippers in it, pulled the plastic tab on the battery part and went to use it, the light worked perfectly, I could clearly see the quick in my dogs nails. I made 2 cuts and the battery cover flew off and the batteries went everywhere. I put the batteries back in based on the diagram on the outside, struggled to get the cover back on and when I finally did, the light didn’t even work. I decided to just try without the light and made another cut, yet again, the battery Cover flew off, batteries fell out. I tried every which way to put the batteries in and the light would not work again. The clipper works good but I bought it so I could see where I was cutting and now that I cannot do that, and cannot cut my dogs nails without it falling apart, I am very disappointed in this purchase. ... show more
