  • This is the official ALIEN tabletop roleplaying gamea universe of body horror and corporate brinkmanship, where synthetic people play god while space truckers and marines serve host to newborn ghoulish creatures. Its a harsh and unforgiving universe and you are nothing if not expendable. Stay alive if you can.

The core rulebook contains one introductory Cinematic scenario, Hopes Last Day.
  • Campaign play is designed for longer continuous play with the same cast of player characters over many game sessions, letting you explore the ALIEN universe freely, sandbox style. The core rulebook contains random tables and other powerful tools to quickly create star systems, colonies, missions, encounters, and NPCs for your campaign.
  • The rules of the game are based on the acclaimed Year Zero Engine, used in award-winning games such as Tales from the Loop and Mutant: Year Zero, but adapted and further developed to fully support and enhance the core themes of ALIEN: horror and action in the cold darkness of space.

  • Unmatched quality
A brilliant game system. A much needed dose of quality writing. The artwork and book quality is top tier. The year zero engine that Alien RPG utilizes is perfect for the space horror of the setting. A system that can be fairly simple or deeply complex depending on your party.

  • Amazing system. Slick and brutal.
PROS: The system design is slick and easy to learn. It also produces a fairly brutal game that readily simulates stress and panic having a tangible mechanical effect. The game is also designed to aid the GM in recreating the feel of the movies, though (as with any TTRPG) you do need to know what you're doing in order to pull off the intended effect/atmosphere. Mechanically, many of the system is geared toward expediting gameplay and spending less time micromanaging resources. Don't misunderstand me though, this does not mean resources are not tracked in some way. After all, this is a survival horror game, so resources play a (potentially) big part, but the "how" is handled through periodic dice rolls to see if resources decrease. Ammo is handled similarly, which I did not like at first, but came to understand the point and have since come to love. Now, contrary to resources being handled by way of a bit of abstraction, stress is kept strict track of and can result in panic. This mechanic is so simple yet effective, but it needs to be handled intelligently by the GM. This leads me to one of the other things I love about this game: the rules themselves encourage you to NOT roll dice unless it is a moment doing so would have a cinematically dramatic impact. Combat, sneaking by a xenomorph that is searching for you, bypassing a damaged airlock door--sure, roll. Trying to hail a colony to get docking permission--don't roll. See what I mean? CONS: Honestly, as far as the system goes, I don't have any issues there. My only complaint is the book layout--it is actually quite beautiful and full of great artwork, but it has a LOT of empty/wasted space. I know they wanted to show off the art and make it easy to read, but they went WAY overboard with the blank space between sections and sidebars. Actually, the layout makes everything look like a sidebar. My guess would be that part of the reason for this is to "fluff" the size of the book, thus making it seem more impressively thick. In actuality, all it did was make me feel jived. I will say though, there is no lack of information. The system is thorough, and the amount of lore present is equally so. If you're into the ALIEN franchise and you want to play out scenarios in the setting, buy this book. You will not regret it. ... show more

  • Great RPG
Better than WOTC product Iโ€™ve ever bought!

  • A fun horror RPG and a good looking book
Having run D&D campaigns for almost 2 years, I approached the Alien RPG system with some experience with TTRPG mechanics, both in terms of D&Dโ€™s strengths and weaknesses. The Alien RPG system, with its focus on cultivating fear and panic, is an excellent system with unique mechanics that I canโ€™t wait to try out (even if Iโ€™ll have to keep a lot of tables and cheat sheets in front of me). In particular, the Alien RPG does a couple unique things (at least in my limited knowledge of TTRPG rules): first, the option for Cinematic Play is a great concept, limiting the story to one session with 3 acts and giving each player personal agendas that change as the story progresses. Second, the stress and panic mechanics (which remind me of the sanity mechanic in Call of Cthulhu) are interesting, and combined with the low-power character stats, make for a tense and dangerous scenario. The book itself could have done with some better organization. For example, key mechanics often have you flipping pages or chapters to get the full concept. Also, a one-page cheat sheet for new players and GMs would have been great (these are available online, so no big deal). As for the mechanics, the one thing that worries me is the concept of referring to tables in combat. Signature attacks by the creatures require a dice roll on a table, the effects of stress require a dice roll on a table, critical injuries require a dice roll on a table (one for players as well as a unique one for the Xenomorph), etc. Conceptually, this allows for varied consequences, varied reactions by monsters, and more specific descriptions of damage, which is great in a TTRPG, but in practice it may be cumbersome to keep so many tables close at hand while running the game. Overall, Iโ€™m really excited to try this out. There are some great ideas in here, as well as streamlined mechanics to create a fast-paced, dangerous, sci-fi horror game. ... show more

  • Great licensed tabletop RPG. Stay frosty.
The game is well done, with an efficient rule set that can take you from a long haul space truckers sandbox to a scripted cinematic colonial marines campaign very easily. The challenge with licensed games is sustaining interest outside of the main attraction. In this case, it's the ALIEN that brings you in. As opponents, they do not disappoint, being extremely lethal in almost every circumstance. That lethality makes them difficult to sustain as an opponent because they'll most likely wipe out all but the most experienced colonial marines squads in very few encounters. Even meeting just one ALIEN at a time can lead to multiple character deaths (like the included scenario, Hope's Last Day, which is a cinematic journey through the eyes of the last few survivors of the Haley's Hope colony). Fortunately, the game provides ideas and random tables that can help pull together longer form campaigns around the three character group concepts: space truckers, planetary colonists, and the colonial marines. Players might demand to see the ALIEN, however, despite the lethality of the game's namesake organism. And that might cut short your experience with this game. Unless it's a cinematic scenario with many ALIENS, the best advice is to keep the ALIEN as a limited and isolated event, for occasional use only. Make sure to throw them in, but don't make it an everyday occurrence. ... show more

  • Good System with superb setting
Played with some friends and we had a blast. Unfortunately is a little too much dependent of accessories sold separately to give a full experience of the game. I strongly recommend to buy the cards with items.
