As many of you may know by now Alice In Chains have reunited, having William DuVall step into Layne Staley's position. Staley passed away in 2002, rest in peace buddy. So while "Alice In Chains" poses as the bands last studio album with Layne, it may not be their final farewell. Anyways, the self entitled album is much darker then their mega hit "Dirt". Dirt was more aggressive and was noticeably dark, this album is much more passive and releases a much gloomier haunting aura of things to come. AiC have composed songs that weave amazing vocal melodies, and you'll find them here as well. Jerry Cantrell manages to belt out a few more guitar licks that are as memorable and hooky as ever. The band seems to approach these songs with a mildly slower manor. Opening with "Grind" a slush of guitar effects soak up the intro, and Layne's vocals noticeably different (well some effects were added for this song but continue listening to it, sounds lower and more jaded). The song manages a catchy chorus and released an alluringly odd music video. "Brush Away" details the sense of late arrival, and disappearances, and just the overall carelessness. Four rather long tracks appear "Sludge Factory", "Head Creeps", "Frogs" , and "Over Now". Sludge Factories guitar wanders helplessly, look at the lyrics "Now the body of one soul I adore wants to die You have always told me you'd not live past 25 I say stay long enough to repay all who cause strife". The album to say the least is pretty messed up. "Head Creeps" isn't much brighter and is much thicker too (not to mention creepy). "Frogs" guitar serves as the spine, and never changes too dramatically during the eight minutes. At the end, you can hear Layne almost testing words in a trivial feel. "Over Now" is probably the most accessible of the four. After a brief static dotted intro, and a trumpet the song begins to really flesh itself out. Dry kicking guitar, and a song as ominous as Nirvana covering "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" for MTV Unplugged. It's like the band could just leach each others energy and just flow with it. One always seems to dip slower throughout a song. Some of the other accessible tunes include heavy hitter "Again", and acoustic based "Heaven Beside You". The album oozes of depth, and is to be taken in consideration that this isn't a radio friendly album. Songs drift too long, some tracks progress too far, and overall isn't as hook ridden as some of the other grunge bands albums. Alice In Chains are thought to be a 'grunge' band, they are highly unique and draw upon dark punk material as well as metal. So with Layne's last studio AiC album we have one of the darkest albums to date. From the powerfully deep "Frogs", to the short rocking "So Close", to the requiem like "Over Now", AiC left no terrain untouched. This is an album that sinks in with every listen, and should be a staple to your collection.

I first heard this CD a long time ago not have any idea it would provide such comfort in my life the way it did! "Shame in You" is my favorite on the album, but it is all brilliant! 1.Grind - A heavy, dark opening tune to the album. Jerry made a definite impression on this song along with Layne's distinct backing vocals! Great song! 2. Brush Away - A good song with Layne's incredible vocals and eerie lyrics and a catchy guitar riff. 3. Sludge Factory - The title describes the song. Layne's dark lyrics with Jerry and Mike on a sludgy guitar and bass. Very good! 4. Heaven Beside You - One of the hit singles on the album. Another good song that Jerry wrote. Very mellow! 5. Head Creeps - A great song that Layne wrote both the music and lyrics to! It's very suspensful and shows Sean Kinney's obvious talent in drumming. 6. Again - Another one of the singles on the album! More upbeat and once again Layne's lyrics and vocals match Jerry's guitar and will makes hyped up! 7. Shame in You - In my opinion, the most soulful song on the album! Layne's lyrics and vocals are so strong in this song and Jerry has the guitar at a relaxing pace and is that way the whole song! Great song! 8. God Am - It's a good song. You can obviously tell Layne has frustration towards God hence the title. Jerry has a heavy, crunchy guitar and Sean keeps an impressive drum beat in the song. 9. So Close - A very short, but rockin' song that has the potential to make you headbang. Layne's lyrics and vocals and Jerry's guitar make the song great! 10. Nothin' Song - The lyrics don't make any sense, but it shows Layne's ability to make you smile and it makes want to rock out! Good song! 11. Frogs - Layne, yet again provides his dark and eerie lyrics with Jerry, Mike, and Sean maintaining spooky music in the background! Very good! 12. Over Now - A single on the album that Jerry wrote and it has a mellow, acoustic vibe that is very good and yet again well put together! This album is truly remarkable and I recommend it to all of the Alice in Chains fans out there!

For me is the best produced grunge album, sounds fantastic, and the artwork its from other space and time, heavy, dark, depressing, almost doom.

I love Alice in Chains and while Dust maybe considered their best album I personally love the self-titled album. It is dark and brooding and contains the gems like Sludge Factory, God Am, Grind, radio hits such as Again, Heaven Beside You, and Over Now. Definitely don't pass this album by.

When this came out I listened to the CD so many times. The more I listened the more I wanted to listen. Now I can pretty much do without the hits. There's so much more if you haven't experienced this final statement from the original band. It's really too bad there's only four studio albums from Alice In Chains but this was a great ending. I feel as though it represents Layne Staley the best. I'm only speculating, but it's very Industrial and metallic. Jerry has some of his sweetest solos. Most thoughtful solos. In places it seems as though he's following someone else's lead, that being Layne, but when he let's go it's his best playing by far. Tightest band recorded, perhaps. This one captured it. A new kind of Metal.
