Description

At an early age, Alexa Hampton learned the language of good design, the vocabulary to speak it, and the elements that define it. As the daughter of interior design legend Mark Hampton, she traveled the world by her father’s side, touring the great architectural landmarks and discovering beauty, training her eye. Now one of America’s most influential designers herself, Alexa Hampton provides a tour of stunning residences from her own portfolio. Eighteen classic spaces illustrate in rich detail the elements that govern cultivated design—contrast, proportion, color, and balance. Among the residences are a landmark 1912 McKim, Mead & White restoration on Fifth Avenue in New York City; an eclectic house by the sea layered in textures, patterns, and colors; a contemporary apartment distinguished by simple geometry and clean lines; and Hampton’s own apartment, filled with an exquisite collection of architectural elements. Hampton also explains how she tailored each space to meet her clients’ needs while retaining a timeless aesthetic, and she provides design expertise on everything from fabric schemes to the particulars of paint. From a French neoclassical tour de force of architec-ture, artwork, and design to a Queen Anne summer cottage furnished to showcase the house’s graceful nineteenth-century dimensions, the spaces here speak the language of design—a language that, under Hampton’s tutelage, anyone can master. • A wonderful primer of interior design
I've seen some of Alexa Hampton's work in interior design magazines so when she came out with this book, I knew that I'd be buying it - and I'm glad I did! The book consists of apartments and homes that she's designed along with a narrative for each. In between each of these homes/apartments, she provides an informational narrative covering design strategies and general information. In one section called "paint" she provides information on how she selects paints and what kinds of things to consider when making a paint decision. She also covers some of her favorite "go to" colors. If you are an amateur decorator or an experienced pro, this book should be in your library. I am always astounded at what is involved in decorating ONE room, let alone an entire house. Sometimes we look at a room in a magazine and think "I could have done that" but when faced with an empty space, the designer has to consider electrical outlet placement, lighting, HVAC units, room flow, etc. Alexa provides her expertise as she covers many of these things in the book. There are tons and tons of photos also. She designs in many styles (traditional, modern, transitional) and this book will appeal to all in one way or another. ... show more

  • A lovely book
I bought this book for a client in the Interior Design business as an addition to a library he is starting. When I recieved it I almost wanted to keep it for myself because it was such a beautiful and high quality book. I love the style of Alexa Hampton she is very much a modernized version of her father, (Mark), who was one of my idols when i was an Interior Design student. This is a smashing coffee table book, very collectible and works well as a gift for people who are in this industry or just enjoy the Interior Design and Decoration world. ... show more

  • Alex Hampton: The Language of Interior Design
This was an excellent purchase! It was loaded with beautiful design and has given me many ideas. I took it with me as I was looking for a 1920-1940 chest at a consignment shop which I could guild to look similar to the more expensive antique chests in the book. Found one and it looks great! Anyone can use the designs in this book and adapt them to your home or place of business. It is a highly interesting coffee table book too! ... show more

  • The Family Tradition Continues.
This is one of those books you receive and will keep it for your entire life. It is full of amazing interior photography, beautifully laid out and presented. I keep returning to the book and seeing details in the photo's I didn't see before. I actually sit with a strong magnifying glass and soak up every detail of the pictures and absorb the detail, pretending I am there in the room. A visually stunning book and well written too. It must run in the family, daughter like father. I think more of the interior pictures need to be included when going" inside" to see what the book has to offer it would make purchasing the book a fore gone conclusion. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and learnt a great deal from it. It has pride and place next to my beside table where I escape into it each night and devour every detail of the books photographs and written content that I can. I would recommend this book any day of the week. ... show more

  • Terrific Design Info
Alexa Hampton now runs the company made famous by her late father, Mark Hampton. Her designs are classic, beautiful, amazing and probably out of financial reach for most people. That said, there are wonderful ideas that those of us without her training and background (and talent) can incorporate into our homes. She explains the what and why of design and the photos are gorgeous. ... show more

  • surprised
I keep going back to the book to see if what displeases me is that this is not what I expected. But no....it is boring, the work seems mediocre compared to her father's work....the homes pictured here are either "flat" and predictable, or over the top and almost tacky......it's like the people who own them are "noveaux rich"....even the art work that hangs on the walls looks "just bought". There seems to be no imagination in the work presented here, and definitely no sense of age and breeding attached to the interiors.....come on...put in some weathered pieces in those designs!!! Give them some pedrigree! The author comes across more as a good supervisor of craftsmen than a creative interior designer. ... show more
