  • Better Than What I Was Looking For
Format: Paperback
When I began buying houseplants, I thought it would be useful to have a houseplant encyclopedia to reference for lighting and watering requirements, plus I wanted to be able to read about all types of plants. This is not what I got in this book, but that's okay because what Tovah Martin does is go into depth about a few plants that she sees as valuable and worthy of taking care of over time. This book is really about building relationships with your plants, about choosing plants for their quality and housing them in a way that does justice to both their needs and their aesthetic. Houseplants are not always treated well; people make jokes about how bad they are at taking care of them, and few people do research on a plant before they buy it. What this book does is encourage its readers to be deliberate about plant purchases. It gives examples of several plants that are both hardy and attractive, and while it does provide useful information about lighting, watering, potential problems, etc., Martin's stories about each plant make this a more valuable read than a houseplant encyclopedia. If you are someone who cares about building a relationship with your plants, about treating them like a living thing, this book is for you. If you want a quick reference guide, go with something else. Or try this book anyway - as I said, I thought I wanted a quick reference book, but "The Indestructible Houseplant" turned out to be what I really needed. It has transformed my entire approach to growing plants indoors. ... show more

  • Excellent book
Format: Paperback
Excellent book. It has general information in front. From the information provided the author is very experienced and knowledgeable. The back section has information divided into the plant groupings with detailed info on what to plant them in, water requirement, sun requirement, and just general odd notes that perhaps only this plant needs this care. I checked it out from our library and liked it so good I bought my own copy. ... show more

  • Questionable title
Format: Paperback
As I looked through this book, I was reminded of past failures as my green thumb was developing. " Indestructible"? Hardly. This book will give you the gumption to try again if you haven't figured it out but I will point out one thing I don't think is mentioned, especially for the norfolk pine. * Distilled water* I have found most plants don't care for the water coming from our aging infrastructure so I compensate. They love that. ... show more

  • Great book for people who have had a hard time keeping plants alive.
Format: Paperback
This book has a lot of information on over 200 plants that can be grown by beginners & novices. Gives info on how often to water each plant, what levels of light they need, what kinds of soil is best, when to fertilize certain plants, & lots of other tid bits on becoming a successful indoor gardener. ... show more

  • A must book to have before buying house plants ....
Format: Paperback
... if you live in a small apartment with north facing windows and very little light but want/need some house plants that will survive. I thought I knew enough about types of plants to buy until I read this book. I took this book with me to the neighborhood plant store (The Sill -- they have lots of varieties) and I picked up plants that are "bullet-proof". So far every plant I bought is doing very well -- not easy when you have low lighting and only 2 small windows and it's winter time in NYC. ... show more

  • ... trying over the past few years to do a better job of keeping my house plants alive
Format: Paperback
I've been trying over the past few years to do a better job of keeping my house plants alive. It's been a guessing game for the most part as far as light, location, container, and water level goes. Using this book I've actually been able to care for my plants a lot better, and been able to select a few more the add some charm to my day room. I really appreciate the way Tovah Martin refers to her plants, feels more like they are her friends than just something that sit in the corner. Each plant in her book has its own special story. ... show more

  • Excellent book about easy care houseplants
Format: Paperback
I really love this book by Tovah Martin. She has a really warm and personable writing style. She has very good tips on various houseplants that are easy to grow for people who do not have the most ideal conditions in their homes. The book is filled with lovely photographs of plants throughout her home. Tovah gives good tips on how to water, repot and fertilize plants. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to grow indoor plants successfully. ... show more

  • For the super duper novice
I consider myself a youngling in indoor plant care and yet I knew most of what Tovah discussed in this book. My suggestion is to read this book BEFORE you buy your first plant. I enjoyed her writing style as it made me feel like we were in conversation. The specific plants sections were easy to follow and give enough information to get started. What was mostly new for me were her recommendations for creating little indoor gardens aka how to decide what plants should be potted together. Most of this of course was common sense if you have some experience with plants. I personally would prefer a more technical guide as reference material but this book is a decent starting point if you're picking out your first plant. Tovah is definitely the reader's cheerleader. Her motto that anyone can be an indoor gardener rings true. ... show more
