  • Worth the price, but keep your fingers crossed!
Color: MI Red
I've had my eye on this violin for about 6 months when I first saw it for around $200 (the brown version). When the red version came up for $210, I ordered one. I was very happy to see that it matches the look of violins in the photos. The sound post was down and rattling inside, and I had to reshape the bridge as it was too high on the E and a bit high on the A. To their credit, Aklot gave me $25 to have the sound post serviced at a shop. The most important thing about learning the violin is having the proper setup. String spacing at the nut and bridge, height at the nut and bridge, and a proper bridge shape. But even a beginner can appreciate a quality violin over a poor sounding one. I would not "settle" for a cheap violin just because I am a beginner. I have to say that the sound quality of this Aklot floored me. It honestly looks and sounds almost exactly like my Christina S200, which is a $1200 violin new (mine was used). I will say that the Aklot has a tendency to howl around F# on the D string where the Christina has the same resonance without the howling. I think the Aklot will need more player control, but the potential is there for sure. I show a photo of this Aklot between a Christina S100 and S200. You can see how similar the top plates are between the S200 and the Aklot. I also show a photo of the backs. It is the ribs and back where the Aklot reveals itself as being at a lower price point, with a distinctly plainer look. On the last day of the sale, I bought a second Aklot, and this second one caused me to change my opinion a bit. The 2nd Aklot did not have sound post issues and its bridge was near perfect. I think the strings are tad too high at the nut, but not enough to change. The real issue is that the grain on the top plate was very different from the first Aklot, and it doesn't sound at all the same. Also, I show a photo of the two peg boxes. The first Aklot had good looking pegs that were very well fit, while the pegs on the second one seemed to be of a rougher wood and with a notably poorer fit. One good thing about the second violin is that although it didn't sound as resonant to me, it did not have any howling at the first position on the D string. Customer support indicated that the finish is "semi-oil". It looked like an oil varnish in the photos which is why I ordered it. I don't know what "semi-oil" really means. I will say it is very soft and both violins had a little finish scuffing under the tailpiece where the bridge was sitting wrapped in paper. The strings are color coded identical to Dominant, but I was told they are replicas. I also noticed that the bridge stenciling resembles a European bridge, but it is not. I'm giving it 5 stars because I think it is well worth the $200 to $300 price point. I hope Aklot continues to make this model as I don't see it on their website, and I think this model shows promise. Both of these violins sound much better that other violins I have tried at the same price point. The inconsistency between the two I tried is unfortunate, but they both have their strong and weak points. If I can address the occasional howling I get on the first violin, I'll have a $210 violin that sounds as good as a $1200 violin, even if it is not quite as visually interesting. One final note. I would have been nice it the violin had shipped with all 4 fine tuners, even if not installed. I ran out of good tuners so put a $7 set on the second Aklot and immediately broke 2 strings. I am a perfectionist and can never get a violin tuned using the pegs, and pegs-only tuning is especially frustrating when the strings are still stretching. ... show more

  • It’s honestly a really good violin
Color: MI Black
Hi I have been playing the violin for around 4 years and I have had this violin for maybe almost a month and it’s honestly really good. It has a really good sound and in the beginning the strings do slip but that happens with any new violin. So if you find that it is not staying in tune just keep playing on it and over time it will stay. But I did struggle opening it. Over all it’s honestly a really good violin and I love the way it looks and the sound it produces! ... show more
